There is no clear all-around winner. Surfshark is the stronger fit if you value its reported larger server network, RAM-only infrastructure and bundled security tools. IPVanish is worth considering if its displayed introductory price or feature set suits you better. Both advertise unlimited device connections, and the available speed results come from different tests, so neither a price snapshot nor a headline speed figure settles the choice.

Which service offers better value?
Compare the bill, not just the monthly equivalent
In the July 1, 2026 comparison, IPVanish Essential is listed 30 cents per month below Surfshark Starter on the two-year term, and 6 cents per month below Surfshark on the annual term. Those small differences do not establish which subscription will cost less over time: the comparison does not state the total upfront charge or renewal amount, and the live Surfshark offer differed from its dated figures. Confirm the exact term and renewal price at checkout.

Pay for features you will use
Surfshark’s higher tiers bundle additional security tools, while Dedicated IP is purchased separately. IPVanish has Essential and Advanced tiers. The available information does not establish a like-for-like list of every included tool or its current price, so compare the plan details shown to you and count only features you would otherwise pay for.

How do their networks compare?
Surfshark’s comparison reports more servers for Surfshark—4,500+ versus IPVanish’s 3,400+—while reporting more country locations for IPVanish—112 versus Surfshark’s 100. These are provider-comparison figures updated July 1, 2026, and may change. Server count and country count describe different things: a larger server total does not mean coverage in more countries, nor does country count by itself establish performance in a particular location.
Which is better for privacy?
Read audits by their scope and date
Surfshark’s Trust Center reports Deloitte reviews of its no-logs policy in 2023 and 2025, plus an infrastructure audit by SecuRing completed in December 2025. Tom’s Guide reports a 2025 IPVanish no-logs audit by Schellman Compliance. These are not identical audits: a no-logs policy review and an infrastructure audit address different questions. An audit provides evidence within its scope and at the time it was conducted; it is not a guarantee about every future operational practice.

“No logs” does not mean no temporary operational data
Surfshark’s comparison says it temporarily retains user IDs and connection timestamps and deletes them within 15 minutes after a session ends. That disclosure can coexist with a no-logs policy claim: running a service may involve transient connection information, which is different from retaining a history of a user’s online activity. Review the provider’s current policy and the scope of its published audits rather than treating the phrase “no logs” as proof that no data is ever processed.
Consider history and jurisdiction in context
Security.org discusses a past IPVanish no-logging controversy and later audit work concerning its policy. The historical issue should not be treated as a description of current operations, but the later audit should not erase the history either. Security.org lists Surfshark as headquartered in the Netherlands and IPVanish in the United States; a company’s jurisdiction alone does not establish how it handles data.

Which VPN is faster?
The published figures do not come from a controlled head-to-head, so they cannot establish that one service is faster than the other.
- IPVanish: Tom’s Guide’s 2026 WireGuard tests reported median speeds of 738 Mbps on its nearest tested server and 449 Mbps on its farthest.
- Surfshark: Surfshark’s comparison, updated July 1, 2026, cites Cybernews figures of 663.6 Mbps average download and 269.8 Mbps average upload.
The measurements come from different test sources and conditions, and Surfshark’s figures are cited by Surfshark in its own comparison. Your result will also depend on your connection, device, protocol and server location. If speed is decisive, use any available trial or refund period to test both services from your usual locations and on the devices you actually use.

Which is better for streaming or restricted networks?
Both have been described as capable streaming VPNs, but access depends on the streaming service, catalog, region and time. Tom’s Guide says IPVanish unblocks a fair share of services, while Security.org reports Netflix support. These reports do not promise access to a particular title or uninterrupted playback.
Recommended Free Tools
Surfshark’s support documentation, updated October 2, 2026, describes NoBorders as a feature intended to allow VPN use through network restrictions such as geoblocking or government censorship. That description is not a guarantee that it will work on every network or in every jurisdiction. Check local laws and the rules of the service you intend to use.
Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Do unlimited connections make a router necessary?
Both services advertise unlimited simultaneous device connections: Surfshark states this on its official page, and Tom’s Guide reports it for IPVanish. If the only reason you were considering a VPN router was to cover more devices than a subscription permits, that limit is not a clear reason to choose one over the other. A router may still suit a particular home setup, but the available evidence does not make router hardware a prerequisite for either service.
How to choose between Surfshark and IPVanish
- Check your actual price: compare the checkout total for the same billing period, the renewal rate and the features included in that plan.
- Match the network to your needs: look for the countries and locations you need rather than choosing solely by total server count.
- Decide what privacy evidence matters to you: compare audit dates and scope with each provider’s current policy and data-retention disclosures.
- Test your own use case: try your regular streaming services, work networks and connection locations under any trial or refund terms available to you.
Verdict: which VPN wins?
Choose Surfshark if its reported larger server count, RAM-only infrastructure and bundled higher-tier tools align with your priorities. Choose IPVanish if its plan features or checkout price make better sense for you. Neither is a definitive winner on the available evidence: the network figures are time-sensitive, prices and promotions vary, privacy audits cover different scopes, and the speed numbers are not directly comparable.
