The best Surface Laptop 5 alternative depends on whether you want to stay with Windows, switch to macOS, or prioritize a lighter design or upgradeability. For a conventional Windows ultraportable, compare the 2026 Dell XPS 13; for macOS, consider the MacBook Air M5; for a lightweight Windows-on-Arm laptop with an OLED display, look at the ASUS Zenbook A14. Framework Laptop 13 is the more specialized choice if upgradeability matters most.
Surface Laptop 5 remains a useful benchmark, but it is not Microsoft’s current generation in 2026. Here is what it offers and how to choose among alternatives without treating different battery claims or configurations as directly comparable.
What the Surface Laptop 5 offers
Microsoft sold the Surface Laptop 5 in 13.5-inch and 15-inch sizes, both with 12th Gen Intel Core processors and 3:2 touchscreens. The 13.5-inch model has a 2256 × 1504 display at 201 PPI; the 15-inch model has a 2496 × 1664 display at 201 PPI. Microsoft describes the laptop as designed for multitasking across tabs and apps with 12th Gen Intel Core i5 or i7 processors on the Intel Evo platform. Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 5 specifications list up to 18 hours of typical device usage for the 13.5-inch model and up to 17 hours for the 15-inch model; these are manufacturer estimates, not independent battery-test results.

The June line starts at $1,599 MSRP, with Microsoft claiming up to 20 hours for the 13.8-inch and 19 hours for the 15-inch models. The September 13-inch model starts at $1,199 MSRP, with up to 22.5 hours of claimed battery life; its announced October 13 release in select markets is still in the future as of October 9, 2026. These newer Surface models are context, not alternatives to the Surface Laptop 5. Microsoft’s June announcement and September announcement provide the model and availability details.

Best direct Windows alternative: Dell XPS 13 (2026)
The 2026 Dell XPS 13 is the most straightforward option here if you want a premium, compact Windows laptop rather than a change of operating system. Dell lists a 2.5K touch display, a starting weight of 2.2 lb, and up to 17 hours of streaming. Those are Dell’s advertised figures and are not directly equivalent to Microsoft’s typical-usage estimates for Surface Laptop 5. Dell’s XPS comparison is the place to check available configurations and specifications.
Tom’s Guide names the XPS 13 as its Windows alternative in a 2026 13-inch laptop comparison and measured 14 hours 29 minutes in its own battery test. That is an editorial test result, not Dell’s advertised streaming duration; the two figures use different methods. Tom’s Guide’s comparison explains its tested comparison. Before buying, verify the exact processor, memory, storage, display option, and port selection for the local configuration you are considering.

Best MacBook alternative: MacBook Air M5
Choose the MacBook Air M5 only if macOS works for you. It is a cross-platform alternative, not a Windows-compatible replacement: Windows-only applications, peripherals, and workflows may require a different app, a remote Windows machine, or another solution.

In Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison, the MacBook Air M5 weighs 2.7 lb and has a 13.6-inch, 2560 × 1664 display. The publication recorded 15 hours 37 minutes in its battery test. This result is useful as that review’s observation, not proof that it will outlast a Surface Laptop 5 in every workload. Best lightweight Windows-on-Arm option: ASUS Zenbook A14
The ASUS Zenbook A14 is worth considering if low carry weight and an OLED screen are high priorities. Windows Central names it a runner-up for portability and OLED in its 2026 Windows-on-Arm guide. A reviewer cited by that guide reported 12 hours of regular use, but that is not a controlled, side-by-side test against Surface Laptop 5 or the other laptops here. Windows Central’s Windows-on-Arm guide gives its recommendation context.
Because this is a Windows-on-Arm option, check that your essential applications and connected devices work on Arm before purchasing. Confirm the exact processor and display configuration in your market rather than assuming every Zenbook A14 listing has identical specifications.

Best for upgradeability: Framework Laptop 13
Framework Laptop 13 is a priority-specific alternative for buyers who value upgradeability; Tom’s Guide calls it out for that reason. It is not a direct Surface Laptop 5 clone, so compare the exact current generation and local listing against your needs rather than relying on the model name alone. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison identifies its upgradeability as a distinguishing consideration.
Which alternative should you choose?
- Stay with conventional Windows: Start with the Dell XPS 13 (2026), then compare the exact display, ports, processor, memory, and storage configuration.
- Move to macOS: Consider the MacBook Air M5 if your required apps and workflow are supported on macOS.
