A surf lesson booking API built with GoFr needs to do more than expose endpoints: it must protect limited lesson capacity, define when a reservation becomes real, and make payment and retries predictable. GoFr provides a Go framework with REST-oriented defaults and documented support for authentication and observability, but the available documentation does not establish a particular implementation or firsthand surprises. This guide sets out a practical design grounded in GoFr’s published capabilities and documented booking workflows.

What GoFr contributes to a booking API

GoFr describes itself as an opinionated Go framework for microservice development. Its official overview highlights REST-oriented defaults, middleware, environment-based configuration, and observability through metrics, traces, and logs, alongside integrations with databases and messaging systems. Those are framework capabilities, not guarantees about performance or proof that a particular booking service is simpler to build. See GoFr’s official framework overview.

The project repository lists further features, including authentication middleware, database migrations, Swagger rendering, and gRPC. It states Go 1.24 or later as a prerequisite; check the current repository before choosing a Go version because compatibility requirements can change. GoFr project repository.

Choose an API shape that fits the clients

REST for explicit booking operations

A REST design can make the reservation lifecycle legible through separate operations: find availability, create a temporary hold, confirm it, and cancel it. The important choice is not a framework default but the contract clients rely on: which operation reserves capacity, which one finalizes the booking, and what response means the lesson is secured.

GraphQL when clients need a schema-driven query interface

GoFr also documents schema-first GraphQL. Its guide places the schema in ./configs/schema.graphqls and describes registered query and mutation resolvers served at /graphql, with a playground route also documented. This is an available alternative, not evidence that GraphQL is preferable for booking APIs. Consider whether clients need flexible combinations of availability and lesson data, and whether the additional schema and resolver surface is justified. The guide does not compare performance or prescribe GraphQL for this use case. GoFr GraphQL guide.

Model capacity as a reservation lifecycle

SurfBooking’s partner API documents a two-step booking workflow: create a booking on hold, then confirm it. The hold expires and releases the slot if it is not confirmed; confirmation is described as idempotent. This is one vendor’s documented workflow, not a universal rule, but it illustrates the key inventory question for a surf school: when does a place stop being available to other customers, and what restores it if the customer abandons checkout? For a custom service, define the state transitions and their effects before implementing handlers. A hold must reduce available capacity for its lifetime; confirmation must not reserve the same place twice; expiry and cancellation must return capacity exactly once. Persist enough state to distinguish a pending hold from a confirmed booking, and make retries safe for operations that clients may repeat after a timeout.

  • Inventory safety: establish the capacity check and reservation as one consistent operation so concurrent requests cannot claim the final place twice.
  • Expiry: specify when a hold expires, how expiry is processed, and how the client learns that the slot is available again.
  • Retry behavior: define whether duplicate create or confirm requests return the existing result or produce a conflict; do not leave clients to infer the outcome after a network failure.
  • Cancellation: make clear which states can be canceled and when capacity is released.

Keep payment and booking boundaries explicit

Glofox’s booking documentation distinguishes payment taken in person from payment processed through the app or another platform. Its workflow includes booking inputs such as user, payment method, guest bookings, and a charge flag; these are Glofox-specific fields, not GoFr features or a required schema for a surf-school API. The useful design lesson is to decide whether payment occurs before confirmation, after a hold, or in person, and to state what happens to the reservation if payment fails. Glofox bookings workflow.

Do not treat a successful reservation response as proof that payment has settled unless the service actually performs and verifies that payment. If payment is handled externally, define how the booking reflects pending, failed, and completed payment outcomes, and how a timed-out payment attempt can be reconciled without charging twice or silently losing a held slot.

Match authentication to the caller

GoFr documents Basic authentication, API keys, and OAuth/JWT validation against a JWKS endpoint. These choices serve different trust boundaries: a partner integration, an application acting for signed-in customers, and an internal service do not necessarily need the same credential model. Identify who is calling each endpoint and what that caller is allowed to do before selecting middleware. The GoFr guide’s title focuses on Kubernetes authentication, so confirm the details against your deployment and current framework documentation. GoFr authentication guide.

Plan for retries, rate limits, and operations

SurfBooking’s developer page reports a limit of 120 requests per minute per API key; requests above that limit receive HTTP 429 with a Retry-After: 60 header. These are SurfBooking-specific published details, with no year stated on the page, and may change. They are not a general rate-limit recommendation for a custom API. Clients integrating with that service should respect the response header rather than retrying immediately. SurfBooking Partner API.

For your own service, decide how rate limits apply to customers, partners, and administrative users. GoFr’s overview describes metrics, traces, and logs; use observability to make booking failures diagnosable, especially around capacity conflicts, hold expiry, external payment outcomes, and dependency health. The framework overview establishes these capabilities, but not a particular monitoring setup or service-level target.

Questions to settle before implementation

  • Does a successful create request hold capacity, or merely record an intent?
  • How long does a hold last, and which process releases expired holds?
  • What response should a client receive when another customer takes the last available place?
  • Is payment captured before confirmation, through another platform, or in person?
  • Can a client safely repeat a request after a timeout, and how is that behavior represented in the API contract?
  • Which callers need credentials, and what authorization applies to each operation?
  • Which availability data belongs to the surf school, and which must be obtained from a partner API?

GoFr’s documentation supports several building blocks for an API, while the vendor booking examples show why reservation state, payment timing, and retries need deliberate contracts. The project-specific choices—data model, database, payment provider, cancellation policy, and deployment—must be decided and tested for the service being built; they are not established by the framework or vendor documentation alone.
