Supermassive Games, the studio behind Until Dawn, The Dark Pictures Anthology, The Quarry and Directive 8020, has finished the redundancy process it announced in August. According to reports published October 5–6, 2026, more than 70 people are leaving the company. That figure comes from posts by departing employees, not from a company announcement.
What was reported in October
PC Gamer and VGC reported that employees had posted that the cuts were complete. PC Gamer quoted a LinkedIn post by Frank Tindle, identified as Supermassive’s IT and facilities director: “More than 70 brilliant people are leaving Supermassive: developers, artists, producers, QA, operations and more.”
Tindle’s wording shows the cuts reached several disciplines, not one team: development, art, production, QA and operations. “More than 70” is an employee-reported number. It has not been presented as an audited or company-confirmed final tally.
What Supermassive said in August
On August 11, 2026, the studio announced a redundancy consultation. Game Informer reproduced the statement: “We have made the difficult decision to begin a redundancy consultation process, which we anticipate will result in the loss of up to 75 of our colleagues. This is a necessary step to help ensure the sustainability of the company. We know this will be an incredibly difficult time for everyone, and our priority throughout the process will be to provide support to all those impacted.”
#1 Best Overall
“Up to 75” was a projected ceiling while consultation was under way. The October reports of “more than 70” sit just under that ceiling, which is why the headline describes the studio following through on its warning.

What is not established
- A final headcount. The reporting gives no verified figure for Supermassive’s workforce after the cuts, and no company-confirmed number of departures.
- A cause tied to Directive 8020. The game launched in May and the consultation began in August, but none of the sources say its release, sales or reception led to the layoffs. The studio’s own explanation is general: protecting the company’s sustainability.
- Whether every departure came through the consultation. The reports describe the announced process as completed, and the number comes from individual posts rather than a company breakdown.
Why it matters
Supermassive is best known for narrative horror games such as Until Dawn, The Dark Pictures Anthology and The Quarry. A cut of this size, spread across QA, production, art and operations as well as development, is a major change for a studio of this profile. Any further company statement on the final numbers or the studio’s plans would settle the open questions above.
