Researchers developed experimental poly(α-lipoic acid) (αLA) adhesives that form within seconds and sealed punctures in mouse amniotic sacs. In the reported experiment, fetal survival was 100% when the ruptures were sealed and 0% when they were left open. That is a striking preclinical result—not evidence that the adhesive has been tested, approved, or made available for use in people.

What the experimental adhesive did

Pal and colleagues described the αLA adhesive family in a 2024 Science paper. The work addresses a limitation of earlier αLA polymers: they could spontaneously depolymerize. The team stabilized the polymer system and adjusted its composition to produce materials aimed at different applications, including tissue sealing, pressure-sensitive bonding, and structural bonding. The paper reports that the pressure-sensitive adhesive worked in wet and dry conditions, while the structural adhesive reached strength equivalent to conventional epoxies.

Chemistry World reports that adding water caused the surgical formulation to form a stable, elastomeric, self-healing adhesive polymer within seconds. The specific setting time is not quantified in the cited account, so “within seconds” should not be read as a universal cure time for every variant or use. Chemistry World’s report also describes a salt-containing variant that formed a rigid, crosslinked thermoset.

What the mouse wound-sealing result means

The surgical adhesive was tested in a mouse model involving ruptured amniotic sacs, a problem relevant to fetal surgery. The paper abstract reports fetal survival of 100% in the group whose ruptures were sealed, compared with 0% in the punctured, unsealed group. These are outcomes in that animal experiment, not human survival rates or a measure of how well the material would work in clinical practice. The study abstract and UC Berkeley Engineering’s account describe the result.

The researchers’ comparisons with existing adhesives are also study findings, not independent clinical guidance. Study co-author Phillip B. Messersmith characterized the αLA polymer adhesive’s mechanical and biological performance as superior to an existing surgical sealant and a medical-grade cyanoacrylate superglue. That is his description of the study’s results, not proof of superiority in human surgery. Chemistry World notes that conventional cyanoacrylate can be brittle and raises cytotoxicity concerns for internal surgical cuts; “superglue” here means the experimental tissue-adhesive formulation, not household glue.

The same chemistry produced other kinds of adhesive

The study is broader than a surgical-glue result. Its materials were tuned for different jobs, and the reported findings should be interpreted in the context of each material’s intended use.

Variant or example Reported purpose or result Evidence context
Surgical adhesive Sealed punctures in mouse amniotic sacs; fetal survival was reported as 100% in the sealed group and 0% in the unsealed group. Murine experiment reported by Pal et al. in Science in 2024.
Pressure-sensitive adhesive Reported to bond under wet and dry conditions; cured material could be used in tapes and sticky notes. Materials findings reported in the paper abstract; tape and sticky-note examples described by Chemistry World.
Structural adhesive Reported strength equivalent to conventional epoxies. Materials finding reported in the paper abstract.
αLA film bonded to stainless steel Failed after more than seven days under a static 1 kg load, versus less than two minutes for a conventional butyl-acrylate/acrylic-acid polymer. UC Berkeley Engineering’s 2024 account of a specific materials test; this is not a clinical benchmark. Source.

What is—and is not—known about clinical use

The cited sources establish a peer-reviewed materials study and animal-model findings. They do not establish human clinical testing, regulatory approval, clinical availability, or a retail product containing this specific adhesive. The result therefore does not mean surgeons can currently use it to seal internal wounds in patients.

VetWeld Tissue Adhesive Surgical Glue, 3 mL 3 Pack Vet Glue
  • FOR VETERINARY USE ONLY: VetWeld is an n-butyl cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive for use by veterinary professionals. Approximate the wound edges, apply it sparingly to the skin surface in a thin layer, then hold the edges together for 10 seconds.
  • FOR A RANGE OF PROCEDURES: Use this surgical glue for pets and other appropriate animals (excluding livestock) on lacerations and abrasions. Apply topically and sparingly, keeping the adhesive out of the wound cavity and off any hair over the wound.
  • TOPICAL SEALANT OVER SUTURES: Beyond direct closure, this wound glue for pets also works as a topical sealant over traditional closure methods including staples and sutures, and it can be reapplied after the site is checked.
  • NATURALLY SLOUGHS OFF: Vet Weld skin glue for pets sloughs off as healing occurs, so there is no separate removal step. Check the site once the procedure is complete and reapply the adhesive if necessary.
  • 3 mL BOTTLE, SINGLE OR 3 PACK: Each 0.1 fl oz bottle has an applicator tip for controlled placement. Not for internal use, below the epidermal layer, or on deep puncture wounds. See the Instructions for Use. Store cool and dry or refrigerate.

First author Subhajit Pal said αLA adhesives could be sustainably sourced because αLA can be biomanufactured. That points to a potential sourcing route, not a demonstrated life-cycle assessment. Chemistry World reported that the researchers were pursuing further surgical uses and commercial development, but the cited sources do not verify a currently operating commercial program or product.

A 2025 follow-up listed by the Messersmith Lab concerns solid-state medical superglue precursors, but it does not change the limits of the 2024 mouse result or establish clinical availability of the adhesive described here. Messersmith Lab’s sustainable materials page.
