For an open or healing wound, use appropriate wound care and physical coverage—not sunscreen applied to the injury. The American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) recommends sunscreen on the area only after it has healed. The guidance reviewed here does not establish a sunscreen patch intended for open wounds or a UV rating for ordinary bandages.

What to use while a wound is healing

Care for the wound first, and reduce sun exposure with shade and coverage. For a minor wound, AAD advises gently cleaning it, keeping it moist with petroleum jelly or a similar ointment, and covering it with an adhesive bandage. For a burn, its guidance describes a non-stick bandage or gauze. Follow the treating clinician’s instructions for stitches, surgery, biopsies, burns, or other more serious injuries.

A bandage or dressing covers a wound, but that does not establish that it blocks UV rays. The guidance reviewed does not provide a UV protection rating for ordinary dressings. Do not treat an adhesive bandage as a sunscreen patch unless that specific product has substantiated UV protection information.

While the wound is healing, use shade and sun-protective clothing as additional ways to limit exposure. Do not apply sunscreen directly into an open wound based on this guidance.

Transparent Film Dressing 4" x 4.75" Box of 30, Waterproof Bandages
  • Breathable & Comfortable: Transparent film dressings are highly breathable, allowing the skin to breathe freely and helping to promote natural wound healing. High ductility, can be used for flexible connectors. Pre-cut transparent design, easy to use, easy to observe the wound site or equipment conditions.
  • Waterproof: Transparent ultra-thin film dressing has excellent waterproof performance, and the fixed effect is good, do not worry about falling off. Even in daily bathing, showering, swimming and other water activities, it can effectively block dirt and liquids to avoid wound infection.
  • Hypoallergenic: The transparent film dressing consists of a bonded clear polyurethane film and release paper, which is latex free and avoids skin irritation. Waterproof transparent dressing provides gentle and safe fixation, does not stick to the wound after removal, reduces pain, and is easy to change.
  • Mutiple Use: The film dressing provides protection for abrasions, cuts, scratches, minor burns, other small wounds, post-operative incisions, and can also be used for intravenous catheter fixation, non-stick dressing protection, baby navel care, post-tattoo care and many other scenarios. Easy to carry, can also be used as an outdoor first aid bandage, to avoid sweat or dust contamination of the wound. It's a must-have wound care bandage for first aid kits.
  • Note: Transparent film dressing can be used as a medical fixed and non-adhesive dressing, but do not directly apply to open wounds or wounds with excessive exudation, should be used with gauze or non-woven cloth, when removing the dressing to peel back the dressing rather than pull up from the skin, to avoid tearing the wound again. If you encounter any problems during use, please contact customer service in time.

What to use after the wound has healed

Once the skin has healed, AAD recommends applying broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to the area. Its general sunscreen guidance recommends a water-resistant product, applying it before going outdoors, and reapplying every two hours outdoors and after swimming or sweating. Clothing and shade remain useful alongside sunscreen.

SPF describes protection against UVB, not every type of ultraviolet radiation. AAD says SPF 30 filters out 97% of UVB rays; that figure describes sunscreen, not a bandage or patch.

Where silicone scar sheets fit

Silicone gel sheets are a scar-care product, not a sunscreen patch or a replacement for a wound dressing. AAD says not to put them on an open wound or scab. Consider them only after the wound has closed or scabbed, following the product instructions or a clinician’s advice.

When to contact a clinician

Seek medical care for a deep or very painful injury, a suspected infection, or a serious burn.
