Dan Ballard has left Northern Ireland’s camp and returned to Sunderland after being injured in the Nations League win over Georgia. Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill was reported as describing the injury as a hamstring problem and saying Ballard would miss the team’s next three matches. Neither a Sunderland-confirmed diagnosis nor a return date has been established.
What happened to Dan Ballard?
The Irish Football Association confirmed that Ballard left Northern Ireland’s senior camp and returned to Sunderland after picking up an injury in the Nations League victory over Georgia. The association’s update confirms his departure and return to his club, but does not identify the injury.
In a separate report, Read Sunderland quoted Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill describing the injury as a hamstring problem: “You saw the nature of how he pulled up, it’s a hamstring.” That characterization is attributed to O’Neill in the report; it is not part of the Irish FA’s squad update.

The available updates do not specify which individual fixtures Ballard had been expected to play in. They establish that he left camp and report his unavailability for the next three matches, not a particular starting role or number of minutes.
Has Sunderland confirmed a diagnosis or return date?
No. The sources establish that Ballard returned to Sunderland, while Read Sunderland reported that a club assessment was pending. They do not confirm a Sunderland diagnosis, the severity of the injury or when he could return to action. A specific recovery timetable should therefore be treated as unconfirmed.
