Apple Pay and Apple Music did not take a decade to arrive: Apple announced Apple Pay in 2014 and Apple Music in 2015. The “decade” is the retrospective—Apple Pay reached that milestone in 2024, and Apple Music in 2025. Their launches also show two different strategies: Apple Pay brought a familiar act into Apple’s device and payments ecosystem, while Apple Music combined streaming, curated radio and artist features.
When did Apple Pay and Apple Music launch?
| Service | Announcement | Launch-era description |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Pay | September 9, 2014 | Apple introduced contactless payments using iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, and named Apple Watch as another supported device. Its initial US partners included Visa, MasterCard and American Express, alongside banks including Bank of America, Capital One, Chase, Citi and Wells Fargo. Apple’s 2014 announcement said those named banks represented 83 percent of US credit-card purchase volume at the time. |
| Apple Music | Announced June 8, 2015; debuted June 30, 2015 | Apple presented it as an on-demand streaming service with human-curated playlists, Beats 1 live radio and Connect, a feature for artists to reach fans. The launch announcement said the catalog contained over 30 million songs and the service would be available in more than 100 countries. Those are launch-era figures, not current catalog or availability claims. Apple’s 2015 announcement also listed a three-month trial, then $9.99 per month for an individual subscription or $14.99 for a family plan covering up to six people—historical launch pricing, not today’s prices. |
What problem did each service set out to solve?
Apple Pay: make paying work through Apple devices
Apple Pay’s launch joined iPhone hardware, NFC, the Secure Element and Touch ID to participating banks, card networks and merchants. Apple said the real card number would not be stored on the device or its servers; instead, it described using an encrypted Device Account Number and a unique transaction number. That is Apple’s launch-era explanation, not an independent security audit. Eddy Cue, then Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, said at launch: “Security and privacy is at the core of Apple Pay.”

The service depended on more than an Apple device: card issuers and networks had to participate, and merchants needed to accept the payment method. Apple’s first announcement named Apple Watch compatibility as well as iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus; it does not establish compatibility for particular current Watch models.
Apple Music: combine access, programming and artist connection
Apple Music brought together a streaming catalog, human curation, Beats 1 and Connect rather than presenting itself as only a way to play individual tracks on demand. Cue described the launch bundle as: “All the ways people love enjoying music come together in one app — a revolutionary streaming service, live worldwide radio and an exciting way for fans to connect with artists.” The statement captures Apple’s positioning at launch; it is not an independent assessment of the service.

What did Apple report at the decade marks?
Apple Pay in 2024
In an October 17, 2024 anniversary update, Apple said Apple Pay was used by hundreds of millions of consumers in 78 markets, accepted at millions of websites and apps and tens of millions of stores, and supported by more than 11,000 bank and network partners. These are Apple’s dated, self-reported figures. Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, summarized them in the anniversary announcement.
The update also described uses beyond checkout, including eligible event tickets, transit cards, keys and government IDs, as well as rewards and installment options. Availability depends on market, eligibility and participating providers; Apple noted that lending options are provided by lenders, not Apple. The announcement does not establish that every feature is available in every region today.

Apple also published findings from a Morning Consult survey it commissioned. Morning Consult surveyed 3,014 US adults ages 18–64 from September 10–13, 2024. In Apple’s graphics, 90 percent cited ease of use, 88 percent privacy and 87 percent security as reasons they loved Apple Pay; 85 percent said they were very or extremely satisfied, and 98 percent said they were likely to recommend it. These are sponsor-reported survey results from that defined US sample, not independent global findings.

On June 30, 2025, Apple marked Apple Music’s tenth anniversary by announcing a new global hub for artists, an artist-facing milestone. The anniversary announcement does not provide a subscriber total or comparative market-share figure, so it does not support a numerical comparison of Apple Music’s scale with Apple Pay’s reported reach.

What does the decade comparison tell us?
The milestones are not directly comparable measures of success. Apple’s Pay update reports reach across markets, merchants and financial partners, plus results from a commissioned survey. Its Music anniversary item highlights an artist hub but supplies no subscriber or market-share total. The difference in what Apple chose to quantify is not evidence that one service succeeded more than the other.
What the timeline does show is a contrast in the jobs the services took on. Apple Pay integrated an existing activity—paying—with devices and payment-industry partners. Apple Music assembled several ways of finding and experiencing music into one service. In each case, the launch depended on an ecosystem beyond Apple itself: banks, networks and accepting merchants for payments; and a music catalog and artist-facing features for the streaming service.
