The Sunbeam Piccolo Espresso EM2800 is a discontinued manual espresso machine for ground coffee, with one- and two-cup dual-wall filters and a steam wand. Sunbeam’s booklet specifies a 15-bar pump and a thermoblock designed to heat water to 92°C, but those are manufacturer specifications—not independent proof of espresso quality. CHOICE’s public listing gives basic specifications but does not reveal its performance scores, so the evidence supports a practical assessment of its design and ownership risks, not a definitive taste verdict.
What kind of espresso machine is the EM2800?
The EM2800 is a manual pump machine, not a capsule machine or an automatic bean-to-cup model. You supply ground coffee, fill and warm the machine, dose and tamp the grounds in a filter, and operate the selector to brew. Milk is prepared separately with the steam wand.
Sunbeam’s 2017 instruction booklet describes a dual-wall filter that creates additional back pressure, along with a stabilising baffle intended to steady the pour. The manual specifies a 15 BAR pump and says its thermoblock heats water to 92°C. These are Sunbeam’s design claims; they do not establish pressure at the coffee puck, temperature stability during extraction, or the quality of the resulting drink. - Useful Tips: Please kindly note that do not brew coffee immediately after frothing milk. The machine must cool down first otherwise the temperature and the pressure inside the machine will be too high, and the machine will go into over-heating protection mode. What using it involves
The workflow requires more handling than a capsule machine. Sunbeam’s booklet describes these basic steps:
- Fill the removable reservoir with cold water and switch on the machine to warm it.
- If desired, flush water through the machine to warm the cup and filter.
- Choose the one- or two-cup filter, add ground coffee, tamp it, and clear grounds from the filter rim.
- Lock the group handle into the brewing head and operate the selector to brew.
- For milk drinks, purge the steam wand before frothing. Sunbeam advises cleaning the wand immediately after use.
Milk steaming is a separate task from brewing. The booklet says, “Don’t boil the milk when steaming,” and advises stopping when the jug becomes too hot to touch. That is Sunbeam’s practical guidance, not a specified measured milk temperature. The manual also includes cleaning and descaling instructions.

What the available testing does—and does not—tell you
CHOICE identifies several relevant test categories for the EM2800, including taste, ease of use, milk frothing, coffee-temperature consistency, measured heat-up time and time to froth 200 mL of milk. The accessible listing withholds the scores and timings behind member access. There is therefore no public result here to support a numerical rating, competitor ranking or claim that the machine performs well or poorly in the cup.

Is the Sunbeam Piccolo EM2800 worth buying?
It may suit someone who specifically wants a compact manual machine for ground coffee and is comfortable with dosing, tamping, separate milk steaming and routine cleaning. Its 1.3 L reservoir and included one- and two-cup filters describe the documented setup, but public evidence does not establish how well it extracts coffee or how consistent its results are.
The bigger concern is availability: CHOICE lists the model as discontinued. If considering used or residual stock, treat the purchase as conditional on the machine’s actual condition, the seller’s return terms, and what support or parts can be obtained. Before committing, ask to see it power on, heat, pump water, seal at the group handle and steam. These are sensible inspection checks, not reported test results.
