The Sunbeam Café Espresso II EM3820 is a manual pump espresso machine with a 1.7 L removable reservoir, steam wand and dual-wall filter baskets. Sunbeam specifies a 15-bar pump and thermoblock heating; those are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance results. CHOICE lists the model as discontinued, and its public listing does not disclose the detailed test results needed to give it a public lab score. For a used or remaining-stock machine, the practical questions are whether its manual workflow and accessories suit you—and whether the machine and any replacement parts are actually available.
What the EM3820 is—and what its specifications mean
The EM3820 is a manual pump machine: the operator prepares the coffee, fits and locks the portafilter, and starts and stops extraction rather than selecting a fully automatic drink program. Sunbeam describes it as a 15-bar machine with thermoblock heating and its Italian Crema System. Those descriptions identify the design and stated features; they do not establish how consistently a particular used machine extracts coffee.

The 52 mm group-head measurement describes the machine’s domestic-size category. It is not proof that a particular third-party portafilter, basket or other accessory will fit; verify fit for the exact part and machine before buying.

What comes with it, and how the baskets work
The manual documents a measuring spoon with tamper, one-cup and two-cup dual-wall filter baskets, and a 500 ml milk jug. Confirm that these items are present when assessing a used machine; the manual’s included-accessory list does not establish that replacements are currently sold or that third-party parts fit.

Sunbeam says the dual-wall baskets are designed for pre-ground coffee but may also be used with freshly ground coffee. A dual-wall basket adds back pressure, so the stated design is intended to accommodate pre-ground coffee rather than requiring a particular grinder. The manual does not establish which grinder or replacement basket will be compatible.
What independent testing can—and cannot—tell you
CHOICE’s listing marks the EM3820 as discontinued and gives specifications, but detailed results—including expert results, taste, ease of use, milk frothing, temperature consistency and measured heat-up details—are available to members. Its public page therefore does not support quoting a numerical score or claiming a particular test outcome. The listed $159 is a page-listed figure, not a verified current price.

Sunbeam’s comparison brochure can support comparisons of stated design details, such as the 52 mm domestic group-head size and single thermoblock, among Sunbeam models covered by that brochure. It is not evidence of present-day availability or a hands-on comparison of current machines.
Using and maintaining the EM3820
The manual covers setup, espresso preparation, milk texturing, cleaning, descaling and troubleshooting. It recommends flushing water through the machine before first use or after it has been unused for a period. Follow the model’s manual for the full procedure rather than improvising cleaning, descaling or repair steps.

For milk drinks, the steam wand provides the documented milk-texturing feature. The manual’s instructions are the appropriate guide to preparing and using it; the feature list alone does not establish frothing performance or consistency.
Safety and buying a used machine
The manual warns that the machine is under pressure and says not to remove the filter holder while water or coffee is flowing. It also cautions against touching hot parts. Read and follow the safety instructions before operating or cleaning the machine.

Because CHOICE marks the model discontinued, treat a listing as a used or remaining-stock offer only after confirming its status directly. Before purchase, check that the machine powers on, the reservoir and drip tray are present, the filter holder locks securely, and water can be run through the machine without visible leaks. If possible, ask the seller to demonstrate brewing and steam operation. These are practical checks for the specific unit, not guarantees of its internal condition or a substitute for the manual’s troubleshooting guidance. Verify any claimed replacement-part or accessory fit with the seller or manufacturer before relying on it.

The EM3820 may suit someone who wants a manual machine with a removable 1.7 L reservoir, steam wand and documented dual-wall baskets, and who is comfortable following a machine-specific manual for use and maintenance. It is a less straightforward choice for buyers who need a currently supported model, independently viewable performance results, or confirmed access to replacement parts: the public evidence here does not establish those things. Availability and condition matter more than an old listed price when evaluating a used or remaining-stock example.
