CHOICE classifies the EM5000 as semi-automatic and lists a 1.7 L water reservoir. The one-touch milk workflow is the defining convenience; it does not make the machine a fully automatic bean-to-cup model.

CHOICE lists test dimensions including taste, ease of use, milk frothing, temperature consistency, heat-up time and the time required to froth 200 mL. The detailed test results and expert rating are not visible on its accessed page without membership. CHOICE lists AUD 299, but that is a page figure, not a current market quote. The available public information therefore cannot support a specific claim about the machine’s espresso quality, temperature performance or comparative test ranking.

Those reports are reasons to ask questions about a particular machine, not proof that every unit has the same fault or that a known proportion will fail.

- If the cappuccino and latte lights do not illuminate, check that the milk reservoir is in place and pushed fully into position.
- If the machine does not draw water, check that the water reservoir is correctly positioned and that its red shipping plug has been removed.

Does the EM5000 need a grinder?
The grinder is separate. Sunbeam’s user guide recommends a conical or burr grinder for a consistent, fine espresso grind. Sunbeam’s EMM0500BK Café Series Conical Burr Coffee Beans Grinder is an optional separate product, not an included EM5000 component. It is not required if you use pre-ground coffee. If you are comparing machines, check whether the alternative includes a grinder or gives you more control over grind, dose and extraction.

What to check before buying a used or remaining-stock EM5000
CHOICE marks the EM5000 discontinued, so a listing should be treated as used, remaining stock or otherwise requiring verification—not as proof of current new retail availability.
- Confirm the model and variant. Check the label and listing photos for EM5000 or EM5000WR; do not assume similarly named Café Barista models have identical specifications or parts.
- Establish condition and included items. Ask whether the machine has been tested, whether the milk reservoir and group handle are present, and whether both baskets and other listed accessories are included.
- Test the milk workflow if possible. Verify that the reservoir seats securely and that the automatic milk function operates; ask about prior repairs or intermittent faults rather than relying on a general “working” description.
- Check seller, price and warranty in writing. CHOICE’s AUD 299 listing is not a current quote. Confirm the actual price, return terms and any remaining warranty for the specific unit.
- Ask Sunbeam about service and parts before purchase. The product page directs customers to Sunbeam support for repairs, service agents and spare parts, but current availability of model-specific parts is not established.
Who should consider the Sunbeam EM5000?
The EM5000 may suit someone who values one-touch milk drinks and is comfortable assessing a discontinued appliance carefully. It is a less straightforward choice for buyers who need a current model with easily verified parts availability, or who want a performance verdict backed by publicly visible controlled-test scores.
