Ten extreme-weather events across Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba produced more than $1.8 billion in insured damage during summer 2026, according to initial estimates from Catastrophe Indices and Quantification Inc. (CatIQ), reported by the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC). Heavy rain and flooding caused most of the damage; the figure is an initial insurance-loss estimate, not a final claims tally or the full cost to affected communities.
How much damage occurred in the Prairies this summer?
IBC attributes more than $1.8 billion in insured damage to ten events in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba between May 14 and August 23, 2026. The figures are CatIQ’s initial estimates, reproduced by IBC under licence; they may change as claims develop. They describe insured losses, not every household, business or public cost resulting from the storms. IBC’s September 22, 2026 release provides the event list and estimates.
IBC says heavy rain and flooding accounted for the majority of damage. Edmonton was particularly hard hit by record rainfall in June and July. The city’s flooding impacts are part of the broader three-province total, not a separate explanation of the entire $1.8 billion-plus figure.
Which events accounted for the largest listed losses?
The largest single item in IBC’s list was the June 9–10 outbreak in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, with more than $900 million in initial insured losses. IBC describes tornadoes, hail, damaging winds, torrential rain and flash flooding that affected tens of thousands of residents and businesses. Other major entries include:

| Dates | Area | Hazards described by IBC | Initial insured-loss estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 31–June 2 | Edmonton area, Alberta | Flooding | More than $80 million |
| June 9–10 | Saskatchewan and Manitoba | Tornadoes, hail, damaging winds, torrential rain and flash flooding | More than $900 million |
| June 20–21 | Central Alberta | Flooding | More than $160 million |
| June 26–30 | Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba | Flooding | More than $160 million |
| July 4–6 | Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Northern Ontario | Flooding, hail and wind | More than $270 million |
| July 10–11 | Alberta and Saskatchewan | Storms | More than $140 million |
These are selected high-loss entries from IBC’s ten-event list, not a complete ledger of every event or an independent reconstruction of the total. The six entries above do not need to add up to the headline figure: each is an attributed initial estimate, and the source lists four additional events.
In and around Edmonton, IBC’s event descriptions refer to flooded basements, roads, public spaces and streets, as well as sewer systems overwhelmed during rainfall. Those reported city impacts should not be confused with province-wide losses.

What the insured-loss figure does—and does not—measure
An insured-loss estimate captures damage counted in the insurance measure; it does not include all uninsured property damage, disruption, public infrastructure costs or other household and community impacts. Statistics Canada’s analysis of disaster costs explains that distinction and cites a broad historical estimate of $2–$4 in uninsured costs for every $1 in insured costs. That is not a measured multiplier for the 2026 Prairie storms, so applying it to the $1.8 billion-plus estimate would produce an unsupported event-cost total. Statistics Canada’s analysis discusses the distinction and the estimate.

IBC says insured extreme-weather losses in Canada averaged $3.7 billion annually over the last decade, compared with $1.4 billion annually in the preceding decade and $883 million in the decade before that. Those are national historical averages, not Prairie-only figures. IBC also says insured extreme-weather losses exceeded $9.4 billion in 2024, making it Canada’s costliest year on record by that measure. IBC’s figures should be kept distinct from Statistics Canada’s separate catastrophic-claims series.

Statistics Canada reports $8.6 billion in catastrophic claims in 2024 and $2.4 billion in 2025, based on its analysis of insurer financial statements. These figures use a different measure and should not be substituted for, or merged with, IBC’s insured extreme-weather loss figures as though they were the same series. Statistics Canada’s analysis describes its series and scope.

IBC argues for more investment in resilience and recommends land-use planning that avoids high-risk flood and wildfire areas, practical damage-reduction incentives for homeowners, community flood protection, resilient infrastructure, stronger building standards and clear information for residents and businesses. These are policy recommendations, not evidence that any one measure would have prevented losses from the listed events. IBC Vice-President Aaron Sutherland said the rising frequency, severity and financial cost of events demands rethinking how communities are protected and increasing resilience investment. IBC’s release attributes the statement to Sutherland.

What these estimates cannot establish
- The $1.8 billion-plus figure is an initial insured-loss estimate attributed to CatIQ by IBC, not a final paid-claims total.
- The sources describe the storms and reported losses; they do not establish that climate change caused any particular event in the list.
- National historical figures provide context, but their geographic scope and measurement methods differ from the Prairie event estimate.
