Suikoden I & II HD Remaster keeps the two original games’ stories at its center while updating their presentation and adding convenience features. Konami lists HD backgrounds, revised visual effects, redrawn portraits, new environmental audio, auto-save, battle fast-forward, and a conversation log among the changes. Those are publisher-described features, not the result of a controlled comparison with the original releases.
What changed in the visuals?
The remaster updates the games’ presentation without replacing their pixel-art identity. Konami describes enhanced sprites and environmental art with lighting, clouds, and animated shadows; Nintendo’s feature listing specifically calls out HD-upgraded backgrounds and updated effects over pixel-art animation. Konami also says the direction and effects for memorable scenes were redesigned. Konami’s announcement and Nintendo’s listing describe these as remaster features rather than offering a side-by-side technical assessment.
Character portraits
All character portraits were updated in HD. For Suikoden I, Konami says original character designer Junko Kawano redrew every portrait. This is a specific change to the character artwork, distinct from the enhanced backgrounds and effects.

What changed in the audio?
The remaster adds environmental sounds that were absent from the original games, including running water, wind, insects, and footsteps. Konami and Nintendo also describe the battle sound effects as upgraded to HD. These announcements do not say that the music was newly composed or remixed, so the audio changes should not be taken as evidence of a new soundtrack.
#1 Best Overall
- Features of Suikoden I & II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars
- All background illustrations have been upgraded to HD & updated effects breath new life into pixel art
- New environmental sounds effects to immerse yourself in this fantasy world
- Battle SFX are also now HD and add a new level of realism
- Newly added Auto-Save, Battle Fast Forward, and Conversation Log
What new convenience and battle features are included?
The official feature list adds tools for reviewing dialogue and moving through play:
- Conversation log: Review dialogue you have already encountered.
- Auto-save: The game can save progress automatically.
- Battle fast-forward: Speed up battles; Konami also describes double-speed battles and auto-battle.
These features can make dialogue review and routine encounters less cumbersome. The official materials do not establish that every feature works identically in both games or on every platform, so do not assume identical implementation beyond the listed descriptions.

Is the story different from the originals?
Konami says the remaster aims to preserve the original story and the charm of its characters. Suikoden I follows a rebellion against a declining empire and the gathering of the 108 Stars of Destiny. Suikoden II follows the hero and Jowy amid the conflict between the Highland Kingdom and the City-States of Jowston. The release packages both games; it is not a newly written sequel.
