You don’t need to introduce sugar as a milestone. In US guidance, babies and toddlers under age 2 should avoid foods and drinks with added sugars. Build everyday meals around varied, nutrient-dense foods, choose unsweetened options, and use whole fruit when you want natural sweetness. A calm, responsive routine matters more than staging a special “first sugar” occasion.

What counts as sugar, and what should you avoid?

Added sugars are sugars put into foods or drinks during processing or preparation. They are different from sugars naturally present in whole fruit and plain milk. Plain milk contains lactose; that does not make it a sweetened drink.

The CDC says infants and young children have no room in their diets for added sugars, and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises avoiding foods and drinks with added sugar for children under 2. That means there is no need to add sugar to a baby’s food or deliberately serve sweets to a toddler. The CDC’s guidance, updated April 14, 2026, gives muffins, flavored yogurts, and cookies as examples of foods that can contain added sugars: CDC: Foods and Drinks to Avoid or Limit. The AAP’s caregiver advice was last updated August 14, 2024: AAP: How to Reduce Added Sugar in Your Child’s Diet.

Check the label, not just the food name

Packaged foods marketed for children can still contain added sugar. Check the Nutrition Facts label for “Added Sugars,” and compare options within the same category, such as plain versus flavored yogurt. Choosing an unsweetened version lets you control whether to add fruit without making sweetness a default feature of every meal.

What to offer as a baby starts solids

Breast milk or infant formula remains the main nutrition source before complementary foods begin. CDC guidance says to start foods other than breast milk or infant formula at about 6 months, when a baby is developmentally ready—not to introduce sugar first. Signs of readiness include:

  • Sitting up alone or with support and holding the head and neck steady.
  • Opening the mouth for food and bringing objects to the mouth.
  • Swallowing food rather than pushing it back out with the tongue.

Offer textures suited to the child’s developmental ability, and build variety across vegetables, fruits, protein foods, dairy without added sugars, healthy fats, and whole grains. Sugar is not a required first food or ingredient. See the CDC’s guidance on when, what, and how to introduce solid foods and foods and drinks to encourage.

How to handle fruit, juice, and sweet drinks

Whole fruit is a practical way to offer sweetness alongside fiber and other nutrients. Juice is not an equivalent everyday substitute, and sweetened juice drinks are different from 100% juice.

Choice Guidance
Whole fruit Prefer it when offering fruit; it contains naturally occurring sugars, not added sugars.
Fruit or vegetable juice Do not give juice before 12 months. After 12 months it is unnecessary; for ages 1–3, the AAP limit is no more than 4 ounces of 100% fruit juice per day.
Sweetened juice or fruit drinks These may contain added sugars and are not the same as 100% juice. Avoid them for children under 2.
Everyday drinks Choose water and age-appropriate, unflavored, unsweetened milk. Cow’s milk should not be treated as a drink for babies before 12 months.

The juice recommendations are from CDC and AAP guidance; the CDC notes that juice is unnecessary after 12 months and recommends water and unsweetened milk among the better beverage choices. See CDC’s guidance on foods and drinks to avoid or limit and the AAP’s added-sugar tips.

Make a routine, not a sugar milestone

Offer meals and snacks with a range of appropriate, unsweetened foods, including vegetables and whole fruit. Let the child explore new tastes without pressure, and respond to hunger and fullness cues rather than using sweets as a reward or insisting that a child finish a serving.

The World Health Organization recommends responsive feeding: caregivers should notice children’s hunger and fullness signals while encouraging them to eat. Its complementary-feeding guidance covers ages 6–23 months and describes this period as important for learning to accept healthy foods and beverages and establishing dietary patterns. This supports a steady, low-pressure approach; it does not establish that one exposure creates a lasting preference or that a strict ban guarantees a particular outcome. Read the WHO’s complementary-feeding guidance and its 2023 guideline for complementary feeding of infants and young children 6–23 months of age.
