A stylus connects differently depending on the exact pen and the exact device, so there is no single pairing method that works for every stylus. The short answer: first confirm the device supports that pen, then follow the connection method the manufacturer lists for that model. Bluetooth being available on a pen does not, by itself, mean it will write on your screen. Use the steps below to check compatibility first, then connect, then troubleshoot.
Step one: confirm the pen works with your device
Compatibility is the first question, and it has three separate parts that readers often mix up:
- Writing and drawing support depends on the device’s input hardware and software. A device either accepts a given pen protocol or it does not.
- Pairing is a Bluetooth connection, used for some pens to enable features such as button shortcuts or air gestures. A pen can write without being paired.
- Charging may happen through a magnetic attachment, a physical connector, a USB-C cable, or a separate charger, depending on the model.
Each brand publishes its own compatibility tables, and those tables change as device generations change. Check the manufacturer’s page for your exact model before buying or troubleshooting. The sections below cover Chromebooks, iPads, Surface devices, and Galaxy devices, in that order.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChromebooks: Bluetooth styluses are not writing styluses
This is the most common point of confusion. Google’s Chromebook Help states: “Note: You can’t use Bluetooth styluses with Chromebooks.” Turning on Bluetooth will not turn a generic Bluetooth pen into a Chromebook writing tool. The Chromebook’s general Bluetooth menu handles devices such as keyboards, mice, and speakers, but that does not establish writing support for a Bluetooth pen.

Some Chromebooks do support USI styluses, which use the Universal Stylus Initiative standard. Google lists USI-capable models and the USI version each one supports, including USI 1.0 and USI 2.0 for different devices. Support is model-specific, so do not assume that one Chromebook’s support applies to every Chromebook. Before buying a pen, check your exact model on the Google USI model list and confirm the stylus’s USI version matches what the device supports.
If your Chromebook has a built-in stylus, Google’s guidance is to remove it from the device and use the Chromebook’s stylus tools. The available tools and apps depend on the Chromebook and the software installed. Full steps are in Google’s Use a stylus with your Chromebook article. For general Bluetooth device setup, see Google’s Bluetooth device guidance.

iPad and Apple Pencil
Apple lists compatibility separately for Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Pencil (USB-C), Apple Pencil (2nd generation), and Apple Pencil (1st generation). Start with Apple’s Apple Pencil compatibility page and match your iPad’s exact generation and size. Do not infer compatibility from the Pencil’s appearance or from magnetic attachment alone.

Apple Pencil (2nd generation)
Attach the Pencil to the magnetic connector on the right side of a compatible iPad. This pairs and charges it. Bluetooth must be on for pairing. Apple’s steps are in Pair and charge Apple Pencil (2nd generation).

Surface Pen
Writing support and Bluetooth support both vary by Surface model and pen generation. Microsoft’s Surface Pen compatibility and features table shows which combinations support which functions. Bluetooth pairing is needed for functions such as top-button shortcuts. It does not add writing support to a device that does not accept the pen for inking.

- The round head of the stylus is made of silicone, which is used for mobile phones and tablets.
- The stylus pen tip is made of hard plastic, which can only be used for resistive screens such as GPS and navigator.
- The round head and pointed head of the stylus are compatible with all the capacitive and resistive screens at present.
- SILICONE ROUND HEAD, FOR MODERN DEVICES: The soft, conductive silicone round head is designed specifically for all capacitive touch screens, including iPad, iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Android tablets/smartphones, and other similar devices. Perfect for scrolling, tapping, and general navigation.
- PLASTIC TIP, FOR SPECIFIC RESISTIVE SCREENS ONLY (PLEASE NOTE): The fine plastic tip is ONLY compatible with older resistive touch screens, such as those found on some GPS devices, Nintendo DS/3DS, and certain POS machines. It will NOT work on capacitive screens like iPhones, iPads, or modern smartphones/tablets.
Samsung S Pen
Keep writing and Air Actions separate. Samsung states that BLE features such as Air Actions or gestures are not available on a number of listed S Pen and device combinations. The exact feature set depends on the pen and the Galaxy device. Samsung’s current S Pen support page is the authority for your model. A 2023 Samsung comparison, available as a PDF, distinguishes writing support from BLE and Air Action support for the combinations it lists. Treat that document as historical reference, and use the current page for newer models.
Choosing a stylus for your device
There is no universal best stylus. Compare options in this order:
| Question | What to check | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| Does my device accept this pen? | Exact model, generation, or USI version | Manufacturer compatibility table |
| Do I need Bluetooth? | Only for button shortcuts, gestures, or similar features | Manufacturer feature table |
| How does it charge? | Magnetic attachment, physical connector, USB-C cable, or replaceable battery | Setup guide for the model |
| Are accessories required? | For example, the USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter on specified iPads | Setup guide for the model |
| Do I need pressure, tilt, or eraser? | Feature list for the exact pen | Manufacturer specifications |
For a Chromebook, a search phrase such as “USI stylus for Chromebook” narrows results to the right protocol, but confirm the USI version against your model first. For an iPad, check Apple’s compatibility page before choosing a Pencil or an adapter. Neither step replaces the manufacturer’s model list.
When the stylus will not connect
- Confirm the model pairing. Check that the pen and device are on the manufacturer’s compatibility list for your exact models.
- Check power. Charge the pen. On Surface Pen, a red or amber LED indicates low power. Depending on the pen, charge it or replace its battery.
- Turn on Bluetooth only where needed. Apple’s Pencil (2nd generation) pairing requires Bluetooth. Other pens need it only for optional features.
- Retry pairing. Repeat the model’s pairing steps. On Surface Pen, hold the top button for about 5 to 7 seconds and read the LED. Continuous blinking means the pen is trying to pair. Blinking for 2 to 3 seconds can mean it is already paired with another nearby Surface, so remove the old pairing on that device.
- Remove blocking accessories. On Apple’s Pencil Pro and 2nd generation, a case or cover can prevent magnetic attachment or pairing. Remove it and try again.
- Check adapters and cables. On iPads that require the USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter, the adapter and a compatible USB-C cable are both needed for pairing and charging.
Apple’s troubleshooting guidance is in its Apple Pencil troubleshooting article, and Microsoft’s Surface Pen LED states and pairing fixes are in its troubleshoot your Surface Pen article. If your pen still will not connect after these checks, the device may not support that pen, and the manufacturer’s compatibility list is the deciding source.
