A 2026 reappraisal argues that ammonia contamination can explain important mass-spectrometry signals previously cited as evidence that water microdroplets spontaneously generate hydroxyl radicals. The dispute centers on how particular ions are identified and what those signals can establish—not on whether all microdroplet chemistry is real.
What was the disputed signal?
One key signal appeared at a mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) of 36. Earlier interpretations proposed that it was a water dimer radical cation, (H2O)2+•, and treated it as evidence relevant to radical chemistry. A 2025 study in ACS Central Science instead assigned it to NH4+(H2O): an ammonium ion carrying one water molecule.
That distinction changes the chemical story. If the detected ion is hydrated ammonium, its presence does not by itself demonstrate spontaneous formation of the proposed water-derived radical.

Why did the researchers attribute the ion to ammonia?
Accurate mass and fragmentation
The 2025 study used accurate-mass measurements to distinguish the m/z 36 ion from the proposed radical-cation assignment. A 2026 account of the reappraisal also describes collision-induced dissociation: the m/z 36 ion produced a signal at m/z 18, consistent with NH4+. The reported behavior differed from that expected for protonated water clusters.

- Helps monitor and adjust ammonia level and prevent invisible water problems that can be harmful to fish
- Accurately reads ammonia 0 - 8 ppm (mg/L)
- Fish continually release ammonia and uneaten food and decaying organic matter also add ammonia to water
- Use several times a week when starting a new aquarium then weekly or when problem arise
Air exposure and nitrogen purging
In the 2025 experiments, breathing near the droplets increased the ammonium-related ion series, while purging with nitrogen nearly eliminated it. Those results support ammonia from the surrounding air as a major source under the conditions tested; they do not establish that every laboratory or instrument will show the same effect.
The study also reported an unoptimized detection limit for gaseous ammonia in the low-parts-per-billion range. That figure describes those experiments, not a universal specification for mass spectrometers or a measure of typical ambient exposure.

What does the 2026 reappraisal challenge?
The 2026 paper in the Journal of the American Chemical Society critically reassesses evidence for spontaneous hydroxyl-radical generation in aqueous nanodroplets. Its argument is that ammonia contamination can account for important mass-spectrometry signals previously interpreted as evidence of radical chemistry. A separate 2025 paper in Analytical Chemistry likewise discusses ammonia adduction and trace sample contamination as alternative explanations for some ions associated with claims of abundant hydroxyl radicals.
The issue is therefore whether particular observed ions support the proposed mechanism. An alternative assignment for a signal weakens that specific line of evidence; it does not prove that hydroxyl radicals can never occur in droplets or that every reported microdroplet reaction is an artifact.

- Convenient Use: With this kit, you can test your aquarium water at home without the need to send samples to a lab, saving you both time and money. Enjoy peace of mind knowing your aquarium water is balanced and safe without the stress or extra expense.
Why do droplet-generation methods matter?
The reappraisal account distinguishes gas-flow nebulization from electrospray, which uses voltage. These are different experimental conditions, so an observation made with one method should not automatically be generalized to the other. Ambient-air exposure and contamination controls also matter when the claim depends on assigning a trace ion to a reaction occurring in a droplet.
When evaluating a reported result, separate the measured signal from its proposed explanation: ask what ion or product was detected, how its identity was established, how droplets were generated, and whether controls tested possible sources such as surrounding air or trace contamination.

Is this the same as ammonia being used in a microdroplet reaction?
No. A 2024 article in Environmental Science & Technology describes a distinct experiment in which water microdroplets containing 30–300 μM dissolved ammonia were sprayed through a copper oxide mesh. The study reported nitrate and molecular hydrogen from this liquid–solid interfacial setup. Here ammonia was deliberately present in the liquid as a reactant; the experiment was not evidence that ambient nitrogen spontaneously forms ammonia in droplets, nor was it the same as detecting ammonia contamination in a mass-spectrometry signal.
