iVerify found Pegasus-related forensic traces on seven of 2,500 phones scanned by volunteers in a 2024 investigation—2.5 detections per 1,000 scans. That is a warning that infections may be missed, not evidence that one in 400 phones generally has Pegasus: the participants were self-selected and disproportionately likely to be targeted.
What the iVerify investigation found
In an investigation conducted in May 2024 and announced on December 4, iVerify reported seven Pegasus infections among 2,500 devices whose users ran its Mobile Threat Hunting scan. The company described the result as 2.5 infected devices per 1,000 scans. CyberScoop reported the finding as potentially higher than previously published reports, while noting that the volunteers were not a representative sample. CyberScoop’s report and iVerify’s account describe the results.
The seven devices belonged to people outside the United States, in Europe, the Middle East, and countries in the Global South. Reported victims included journalists and activists, as well as business leaders who were not overtly political. This shows that suspected targeting was not confined to public-facing campaigners, but it does not establish how frequently any group is infected.
Why 2.5 per 1,000 is not a population prevalence rate
The 2.5-per-1,000 figure is simply seven detections divided by 2,500 scans. The people who chose to run the scan were self-selected, and iVerify said the sample was not indicative of its entire device population. It was concentrated among journalists, government officials, and corporate executives—groups more likely than the public at large to face targeted surveillance.

Consequently, the result cannot be read as the share of all phones, all iPhones, or even all iVerify users infected with Pegasus. It is a finding within a particular volunteer sample. The study also does not establish prevalence for other commercial spyware families or for every mobile operating system. Its value is as a signal that targeted spyware may go undetected and merits careful investigation, not as a population-wide estimate.
What the scan detected—and what it did not show
iVerify said its Mobile Threat Hunting scan was designed to take about five minutes on a smartphone. It looked for threat signatures and forensic artifacts associated with Pegasus, drawing on research that included work by the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab. The traces were found in diagnostic data, shutdown logs, and crash logs.

The detections did not all represent an active infection at the time of analysis. iVerify described one possible infection from late 2023 on iOS 16.6, one from November 2022 on iOS 15, and five older infections dating to 2021 and 2022 on iOS 14 and 15. Most left identifiable traces, but the evidence did not indicate that the spyware was still active on those devices when they were analyzed. A forensic trace can therefore document a past compromise without proving that spyware remains on a phone now.

What to do if you are concerned about Pegasus
Pegasus is associated with targeted surveillance, so a sensible next step depends on your risk and what you need to establish. A quick consumer scan may offer an initial check; a high-risk situation or a suspected compromise may call for specialist forensic help. No scan result should be treated as a guarantee that a device is clean.

- Consider your exposure. People with a credible reason to believe they are being targeted—such as journalists, activists, officials, or executives handling sensitive matters—should weigh specialist advice rather than relying solely on a routine consumer scan.
- Use a mobile threat-hunting check as an initial screen. iVerify’s Mobile Threat Hunting scan was the tool used in this investigation. Its reported five-minute duration and findings describe this particular service and study, not a promise that every tool can identify every infection.
- Escalate suspicious findings carefully. If a scan reports traces or you have other concrete indicators, seek a qualified mobile-security professional or trusted digital-rights organization. Preserve relevant information and ask how evidence will be handled before resetting or replacing a device if an investigation may be needed.
- For organizations, assess mobile EDR and incident response needs. Enterprise mobile endpoint detection and response can differ from a one-time consumer check in monitoring, coverage, remediation, and evidence handling. Compare those capabilities, supported platforms, privacy practices, and costs directly with vendors; availability and pricing can change.
How to interpret a clean scan
A scan that finds no Pegasus artifacts means the tool did not identify the traces it checks for; it does not prove that a phone has never been compromised or that no spyware is present. Detection depends on the evidence available to the scanner, the device and software involved, and whether forensic traces remain. The iVerify findings themselves include historical traces rather than evidence of ongoing activity on every affected phone.
