A pilot study found statistically higher concentrations of 19 of 60 commonly detected chemicals in shed baby teeth from children with autism compared with teeth from children without autism. The study included just 38 children and cannot show that chemical exposure caused autism, predict an individual child’s risk, or serve as a diagnostic test.
What the study found
In a 2026 pilot case-control study, researchers analyzed shed primary teeth from 38 children: 22 with autism and 16 controls. Among 60 compounds detected in at least half of the participants, 57 had higher concentrations in the autism group, while 19 of the 60 differences were statistically significant. These are group-level comparisons, not 19 proven causes of autism. The study, published online August 1, 2026, in Neurotoxicology and Teratology, examined pesticides and plasticizers using two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with time-of-flight mass spectrometry.
What “19” means
The figure refers to compounds whose measured concentrations were statistically significantly higher in the autism group within the selected set of 60. It does not mean the researchers identified 19 chemicals that cause autism. The broader screening detected about 300 chemicals per participant on average, according to the University of Texas at San Antonio Health Science Center; that average is distinct from the 60 compounds used for this comparison.
How to interpret the chemical findings
The paper’s reporting classified 39 of the 60 compounds as known developmental toxicants or endocrine-disrupting compounds. Such a hazard classification indicates a potential to cause harm under some conditions; it does not establish that a particular child received a harmful dose or experienced an effect. A higher average or group concentration likewise does not show what any one child’s exposure means.

ScienceAlert reported that benzyl benzoate concentration was 722% higher in the autism group than in controls. That is a reported group comparison, not evidence that benzyl benzoate caused autism or that the measured concentration harmed a child. The available reporting does not provide the complete compound list, individual effect estimates, or full details of statistical adjustments.
Why the results do not prove chemicals cause autism
This small observational comparison can identify an association, but it cannot establish whether exposure came before or contributed to autism. It also cannot determine whether autism-related differences affected exposures, or whether another factor explains the association. The findings do not justify blaming parents, bottle use, food packaging, or personal-care choices.

The university release notes that five of the nine compounds with the greatest differences can migrate from plastic bottles. That observation does not establish that bottle use caused the measured levels, or that avoiding bottles would change autism risk.

Why researchers used shed baby teeth
Tooth analysis can help researchers study exposure over a longer period during tooth formation. First author Lynne P. Heilbrun described the rationale in the university release: “Teeth capture cumulative exposures over long periods of time, whereas blood or urine samples only show a specific window of time.” The method is a research tool, not a consumer autism test.

What the study can—and cannot—tell families
- It can: report differences between the two study groups and help motivate larger studies of environmental exposures.
- It cannot: establish that chemicals caused autism, diagnose an individual child, or determine an individual child’s exposure-related risk.
- It does not support: a consumer test, detox product, or prevention strategy for autism based on these findings.
The researchers described the results as evidence of exposure to a wider range of developmental toxicants than short-term exposure studies may identify. That interpretation remains preliminary: the pilot comparison does not establish causation, and larger case-control studies are needed.
