A home reformer saves money only when the studio spending it replaces is larger than the machine’s fully loaded cost, spread over the months you keep using it. In the worked example below, a reader who attends about eight reformer classes a month and stops all of them would recover an assumed $2,250 home setup in roughly nine months. A reader who keeps half their classes would wait about twenty months. The numbers depend on your local prices, how often you will really practise at home, and what you stop paying for.

What studio reformer classes cost right now

The prices below come from two studios’ public pricing pages, accessed October 7, 2026. They describe two businesses, not a national average. The Reforming Pilates page covers several locations in Florida and New York, and the Function Pilates figures are for its Phoenix-area page. Confirm the prices at the studio you would actually attend, because both pages can change.

Studio Option (listed price) Effective cost per class* Terms stated on the page
Reforming Pilates Single reformer class, $50 $50.00 Reformer-only section; pre-tax
Reforming Pilates Recurring plan, 4 classes a month, $145 $36.25 Three-month commitment; credits do not roll over; pre-tax
Reforming Pilates Recurring plan, 8 classes a month, $259 $32.38 Same terms as above
Reforming Pilates Recurring plan, 12 classes a month, $389 $32.42 Same terms as above
Reforming Pilates Limited unlimited plan (one class per day), $499 Depends on attendance Same terms as above
Reforming Pilates 10-class pack, $420 $42.00 Listed in the reformer-only section; pre-tax
Reforming Pilates 30-class pack, $900 $30.00 Listed in the reformer-only section; pre-tax
Function Pilates (Phoenix area) Drop-in class, $40 $40.00 Tax treatment not stated on the page
Function Pilates (Phoenix area) 5-class package, $185 $37.00 Tax treatment not stated on the page
Function Pilates (Phoenix area) 10-class package, $350 $35.00 Tax treatment not stated on the page
Function Pilates (Phoenix area) 20-class package, $600 $30.00 Tax treatment not stated on the page
Function Pilates (Phoenix area) Monthly membership, 4 classes, $119 $29.75 Page advertises 50% off the first month for new monthly signups; this is a promotion that may change
Function Pilates (Phoenix area) Monthly membership, 8 classes, $189 $23.63 Same promotion note as above
Function Pilates (Phoenix area) Monthly membership, 12 classes, $219 $18.25 Same promotion note as above
Function Pilates (Phoenix area) Monthly membership, unlimited, $249 Depends on attendance Same promotion note as above

*Effective cost per class is our arithmetic from the listed price and assumes you use every class in the plan or pack. Unused credits on a plan that does not roll over lower your real per-class cost. Sources: Reforming Pilates pricing and Function Pilates pricing.

The worksheet: five steps to your own number

  1. Calculate your current studio spend per month. Use the plan price if you are on a membership, or the class price multiplied by the classes you attend in a typical month. Use the classes you actually book, not the ones you intend to book.
  2. Calculate the fully loaded home cost. Add the machine price, delivery, sales tax, assembly or setup, and any accessories or maintenance you will need. Add any paid instruction or video service you expect to use at home.
  3. Calculate the monthly studio cost you will actually avoid. If you will keep some studio classes, subtract only the classes you stop. Do not count a plan’s unused credits as avoided spend, because you were not using them anyway.
  4. Calculate simple break-even months. Fully loaded home cost ÷ monthly studio cost avoided. Net out any continuing home cost from the avoided amount first.
  5. Calculate net savings after N months. Studio costs avoided over N months − fully loaded home cost − any continuing home instruction or service costs over the same N months.

A worked example with labelled assumptions

The figures in the table below are assumptions chosen to show the arithmetic. Only the studio plan price comes from a listed page. Replace every assumed input with your own local quote and attendance.

Line How it is calculated Base-case example
Studio spend per month Plan price for your attendance $259 (assumed 8 classes a month on the Reforming Pilates 8-class plan, pre-tax)
Monthly studio cost avoided Part of the spend you stop $259 (assumed you stop all studio classes)
Machine price Your quote $2,000 (assumed, inside the $1,500–$2,500 mid-range tier discussed below)
Delivery Your quote $150 (assumed)
Tax and fees Your local rate applied to the machine and delivery $100 (assumed)
Fully loaded home cost Sum of the three rows above $2,250
Continuing home cost per month Paid video or instruction you expect to use $0 (assumed)
Break-even $2,250 ÷ $259 About 8.7 months
Net savings after 12 months (12 × $259) − $2,250 $858
Net savings after 24 months (24 × $259) − $2,250 $3,966

Variant one: you add a paid video subscription

Suppose you pay an assumed $20 a month for video instruction at home. That cost comes off the avoided amount: $259 − $20 = $239 a month. Break-even moves to about 9.4 months ($2,250 ÷ $239), and net savings after 12 months fall to $618 (12 × $239 − $2,250). The $20 figure is an assumption, not a quoted price for any service.

Variant two: you keep half your classes

Suppose you move from the 8-class plan to the 4-class plan at $145 a month and practise at home for the other four sessions. The avoided amount is $259 − $145 = $114 a month. Break-even stretches to about 19.7 months ($2,250 ÷ $114), and after 12 months you are still $882 short (12 × $114 − $2,250 = −$882). Partial replacement is the scenario in which the purchase most often fails to pay back within a year or two.

How the cost article’s break-even ranges fit in

Pilates Protocols published a cost comparison dated July 14, 2026, estimating home reformer prices by tier and modelling break-even against a studio habit of twice a week. Its estimates are Home Reformer vs Studio Membership: 5-Year Cost Math (2026), and they are the article’s own assumptions, not a verified market survey or a guaranteed payback timeline.

Home reformer tier (article’s estimate) Price range (article’s estimate) Break-even against a twice-weekly studio habit (article’s model)
Budget $300–$800 2–4 months
Mid-range $1,500–$2,500 6–12 months
Studio-grade $2,500–$5,500 10–24 months

These ranges are only as good as the studio spend behind them. If your plan costs less than the article assumed, or you keep some classes, redo step four with your own avoided amount rather than reading the table as a payback guarantee.

What the machine has to fit, and what it costs to install

Balanced Body’s Studio Reformer product page is a concrete example of a full-size reformer. It lists dimensions of 92.62 inches long, 26.5 inches wide, and 15 inches high, and a weight of 152 pounds. Those dimensions work out to a footprint of roughly 7.7 by 2.2 feet before you allow working space around it. The page does not establish that this is a typical home model, and the price was not listed in the content we reviewed for this article, so you will need a quote.

  • Floor space and access. Measure the room, including the space needed to get on and off the carriage and to move around it. The listed height is 15 inches; the page does not specify floor clearance, so measure that yourself.
  • Moving and entry. At 152 pounds, the machine needs a route for delivery through doors, hallways, and stairs. Ask the seller whether delivery includes carrying it in.
  • Assembly. The page says the machine arrives partially assembled. The listed assembly includes attaching springs, shoulder rests, and risers. Budget time, and a helper if you need one, or add assembly cost to the fully loaded total.
  • Frame height. The page describes 14-inch, 18-inch, and 24-inch frame heights and notes different intended accessibility and use considerations for them. Choose the height that suits your body and your room, and check the page for the current details.
  • Warranty. Balanced Body says its frame carries a limited lifetime warranty. Confirm the warranty terms for the machine you actually buy, since they may differ by manufacturer or seller.
  • Included video access. Balanced Body says all of its equipment includes access to the free videos section on its streaming video platform. That is the manufacturer’s own offer and does not establish terms for other machines or services.

The Balanced Body page also calls the Studio Reformer “the number one choice of Pilates professionals for studio use.” That is the manufacturer’s marketing claim, not independent comparative evidence, so it should not factor into the cost decision.

What the studio price buys that a machine does not

The studio price pays for more than the equipment. Pilates Protocols lists instruction, programming, form correction, and a booked appointment as benefits the studio provides and a home machine does not. A machine-only session and a coached class can use the same equipment and still differ in what you get, and the worksheet does not capture that difference. Treat it as a separate decision factor. Whether it matters depends on how much feedback you need and whether you will keep showing up without a booked slot.

Who should run the numbers and buy

A home reformer is more likely to pay off when most of these are true:

  • You attend regularly and can name the studio spend you would stop paying.
  • Your studio charges a plan price that is high relative to the classes you actually take.
  • You have space for the machine and the means to move and assemble it.
  • You are comfortable practising from a written or video routine and can self-correct.
  • You will use the machine most weeks, not only in the first few months.

A studio is more likely to be the better financial choice when you need hands-on correction, when your studio’s commitment terms are short or flexible, when you have no room for a full-size machine, or when your attendance is irregular. In those cases the avoided spend may be small, and the machine may sit unused.

Turning the math into a decision

The purchase makes financial sense only if the monthly studio spend you actually stop, net of any home subscriptions, is large enough to recover the fully loaded machine cost within the time you expect to keep the machine and keep practising. Run the worksheet with your local studio’s plan price, your real attendance, and a written quote for the machine, delivery, and tax. If the break-even is longer than the period you are confident you will use the machine, the studio is the cheaper option for you, even if the machine appears cheaper on paper.
