Start with your school’s actual device and software requirements, then check whether a device you already own can meet them. Buy only when there is a clear gap, and compare options by compatibility, remaining support, warranty, and total cost—not just the sticker price.
Why student tech belongs in the education budget
Tuition and housing are not the only education costs. U.S. Federal Student Aid advises students to choose a budget period, track income and spending, and include variable expenses such as equipment, books, supplies, and personal costs. It also notes that some technology companies offer student laptop discounts, but availability and terms depend on the company and change over time. Federal Student Aid’s budgeting guidance is a starting point; check eligibility and current terms directly before counting on a discount.
There is not enough evidence here to say that laptop or accessory prices have recently risen by a particular amount. Broader living-cost pressure can make planning more difficult, but general inflation figures should not be treated as technology-price increases.

College Board publishes regional low and moderate living-expense budgets for nine- and twelve-month periods in 2025–26 and 2026–27. They are planning starting points for financial-aid officers budgeting for independent off-campus students, not predictions of an individual student’s costs or actual on-campus expenses; local circumstances matter. The guidance incorporates U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI increases of 3.4% for 2023 and 2.9% for 2024. Those figures describe CPI inputs, not student technology inflation. See College Board’s living-expense budget guidance.

For a separate view of institutional cost differences, the U.S. Department of Education’s College Affordability and Transparency Center provides college-cost comparison tools and lists related to high prices and the fastest increases. Institutions appearing on relevant high-increase lists must explain why costs rose and what steps they have taken or will take to address them. Those lists do not show that student technology prices increased.
What tech do I need for school?
There is no universal laptop specification for every student. Begin with the institution’s current requirements, especially for a program that relies on particular applications, peripherals, or workflows. The UK Department for Education’s school and college standards say device choices should be based on how devices will be used, who will use them, and technical requirements. That is useful planning guidance, not a substitute for your own school’s rules. Read the UK Department for Education’s laptop and desktop standard.

- Ask your school or department for its current device and software requirements.
- Check whether required software works on the device and operating system you already have.
- Confirm any required accessories or peripherals before budgeting for them.
- Ask whether the school provides loan equipment or other access options; availability varies by institution.
Do not choose an operating system, screen size, or performance tier based only on a generic “student laptop” label. A device that is adequate for one course may not meet another course’s requirements.

Should I buy a new laptop or keep using my old one?
First test the existing laptop against the school’s requirements and your day-to-day use. If it is compatible and dependable, keeping it can avoid an unnecessary purchase. If a repair, upgrade, or repurposing would close the gap, compare that route with replacement. The Department for Education guidance specifically advises checking whether existing devices can be upgraded or repurposed before buying new ones.

Compare useful life, not just upfront cost
A lower purchase price is not automatically the lower-cost choice if the device will soon lose security support, cannot run required software, or is difficult to repair. Compare each option on:
- Course compatibility: Does it meet the institution’s current requirements?
- Remaining support: How long will it receive operating-system and security updates? Check the manufacturer’s terms for the specific model and location.
- Warranty: What is covered, for how long, and where? Confirm the exact consumer warranty rather than assuming an institutional standard applies.
- Repair or upgrade options: Can a feasible repair or upgrade extend its useful life?
- Practical fit: Consider portability and battery needs for your schedule, but verify these against the specific device and your use.
- Total cost: Include verified education pricing and any necessary accessories or repairs.
The UK school and college standard calls for five years of support and security patches and a three-year warranty for laptops and desktops. This is an institutional benchmark for the UK, not a universal consumer requirement or a guarantee for every device. Confirm support and warranty terms for the model you are considering.

A budget-first order for choosing student tech
- Confirm requirements. Get the current device, software, and peripheral requirements from your institution or course.
- Inventory what works. Check devices you already own, and ask the institution whether loan equipment is available.
- Set an affordable limit. Choose a budget period, track income and expenses, and estimate what remains after essential costs. Federal Student Aid recommends including equipment and other variable school expenses.
- Check current education pricing. Some technology companies offer student laptop discounts, but offers are not guaranteed. Verify eligibility, terms, and final price directly.
- Compare keep, upgrade, refurbished, and new options. Use compatibility, remaining support, warranty, repairability, and total cost to evaluate each path.
- Buy only to solve a defined gap. If an existing device meets requirements and remains supported, replacement may not be necessary.
Protect the device you depend on
Federal Student Aid recommends using a laptop lock as one way to protect belongings. It is an optional purchase that may suit students who leave a laptop in a dorm room or another shared space; consider your setting and how the device will be secured. Federal Student Aid’s college-expense guidance includes this advice.

Budget pressure also affects schools and districts, though institutional purchasing is not the same as student or family spending. A Logitech-sponsored 2025 survey of 101 THE Journal readers—primarily educators, administrators, and K–12 IT decision-makers—reported that 83% identified budget constraints as an influence on school or district hardware purchasing, while 40% cited cost-effectiveness and value over time. The small, professionally focused sample is directional context, not a representative student poll. Logitech’s 2025 report describes the survey.
