The best student tablet with a pen and keyboard depends first on the software your course requires. Choose a Windows device if you need desktop applications that do not run on iPadOS or Android; otherwise, compare the full tablet-and-accessory setup, since pens and keyboards are not always included. The Galaxy Tab S10 FE stands out when you want an S Pen in the box, while an iPad Air suits students whose apps and workflow center on iPadOS.
Start with your course software
Before choosing a screen size or pen, check the software and file formats required by your courses. A tablet can be excellent for reading, handwritten notes, and PDF markup yet still fail as a laptop replacement if a specialist desktop program will not run on its operating system. - Need Windows desktop applications? Consider Surface Pro, then confirm the specific software works on your chosen Windows configuration.
- Primarily use mobile apps, reading, and handwritten notes? An iPad or Galaxy Tab may fit, provided your course tools support iPadOS or Android.
- Already own a laptop? A less expensive general-study tablet may be a practical companion rather than a full computer replacement.
Compare complete student setups
These options answer different needs; none is a universal winner. Accessory compatibility and what comes in the box materially change the value, so compare the cost of the tablet plus the exact pen and keyboard you intend to use. Prices and bundles depend on region and retailer, and current prices are not established here.

When the Galaxy Tab S10 FE makes sense
The Galaxy Tab S10 FE is the most direct fit here if you want a pen for notes or drawing without buying one separately. Samsung says both the Tab S10 FE and S10 FE+ include a pressure-sensitive S Pen. Its support page describes the included pen as suitable for note-taking, drawing, and navigation; that is Samsung’s product description, not independent performance testing.

Do not assume the keyboard is included. Samsung lists the Book Cover Keyboard and Book Cover Keyboard Slim as separate accessories for the Tab S10 FE. Also distinguish the included S Pen from the separately sold S Pen Pro: Samsung says Air actions work with the S Pen Pro, while the included pen lacks BLE, Bluetooth pairing, charging, and Air actions. If remote controls or those connected features matter, factor in the right pen rather than assuming the in-box one has them.
Check iPad Pencil and keyboard compatibility by generation
“iPad Air” alone is not enough information to pick a pen or keyboard. Apple’s current compatibility guide lists Apple Pencil USB-C and Apple Pencil Pro support for iPad Air 11-inch and 13-inch models with M2, M3, and M4 chips. Other iPad generations have different compatibility, so verify the exact model before purchasing a Pencil.

Keyboard fit is also model-specific. Choose a Magic Keyboard identified for the iPad generation and size you own, rather than assuming one iPad keyboard fits every model. The iPad Air can be a good fit for iPadOS apps, note-taking, and creative workflows, but the full cost needs to include the compatible keyboard and Pencil if you need both.

Surface Pro is the Windows-oriented choice in this shortlist for students whose course workflow depends on desktop software. It is not a complete pen-and-keyboard package by default: Microsoft lists both the keyboard and Surface Slim Pen as sold separately. Check the software requirements against the Windows configuration you plan to buy, including any course-specific desktop application, before treating a tablet as a laptop substitute.

Compare portability, input, and total cost
Once the operating system is settled, compare the actual setup rather than the tablet alone. Screen size affects how comfortable it is to read PDFs, split a screen between notes and course materials, or carry the device between classes. A larger display can help with documents but makes the assembled tablet-and-keyboard setup less compact. Try to assess the tablet with the keyboard case attached, not just the bare device.

- Pen use: Confirm whether the pen is included, whether it works with your exact model, and whether the capabilities you care about require a different pen.
- Typing: Confirm the keyboard is compatible with your model and included in the price you are comparing. Consider whether you need a trackpad or mainly want a compact typing surface.
- Portability: Compare the dimensions and weight of the assembled setup, including its case and accessories, against how you travel to class.
- Total cost: Add the tablet, compatible pen, and compatible keyboard. Do not treat an included pen as evidence that a keyboard is also in the box.
- Battery claims: Read the test conditions. For example, Tom’s Guide reported 11 hours and 25 minutes for iPad 11 in its 2026 continuous web-browsing test with the screen set to 150 nits; that is a specific test result, not a guarantee of student-day battery life.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose Galaxy Tab S10 FE if an included S Pen matters most and Android meets your course needs; budget separately for its keyboard.
- Choose iPad Air if your work is built around iPadOS apps or creative tasks and you are prepared to match the Pencil and Magic Keyboard to the exact model.
- Choose Surface Pro if required Windows desktop software is decisive and you have confirmed the software runs on the configuration you will buy; add the separate keyboard and pen to the budget.
- Consider iPad (A16) as a general-study companion to an existing laptop if its app support is enough and Apple Pencil Pro is not a requirement.
