If Airplane mode will not turn off in Windows 11, check its state in both Quick Settings and Settings, then troubleshoot the Wi-Fi adapter if wireless service is still unavailable. A stuck toggle and a toggle that turns off without restoring Wi-Fi are different problems, so work through the steps in order.
Check Airplane mode in both Windows controls
- Open Quick Settings by selecting the network, sound, or battery area on the taskbar, then select Airplane mode to turn it off.
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Airplane mode and check that it is off there too. Microsoft documents both controls in its Windows network settings guide.
Airplane mode disables wireless communications, including Wi-Fi, cellular, Bluetooth, and NFC. Windows remembers Wi-Fi and Bluetooth state from the previous time Airplane mode was used, so those radios may need to be enabled separately after you switch it off.
If Airplane mode is off but Wi-Fi is still unavailable
Run the Windows network troubleshooter
For Windows 11, Microsoft recommends starting Wi-Fi troubleshooting with the automated Network and Internet troubleshooter in Get Help. Open Get Help, search for network or Wi-Fi troubleshooting, and follow the diagnostics. It can identify common problems and attempt fixes. See Microsoft’s Wi-Fi connection troubleshooting guide.
Check whether Windows detects the wireless adapter
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters and look for the PC’s wireless adapter.
- If it is listed but disabled, right-click it and choose Enable device, if that option is available.
If no wireless adapter appears, Windows is not detecting it. A setting change alone cannot make an undetected adapter work. Microsoft explains how to locate wireless hardware in its wireless-network setup guide.

Check for a compatible driver before removing one
Look for applicable driver updates through Windows Update and the support page for your PC’s exact model. If you plan to uninstall the network adapter driver, first download and keep the manufacturer’s driver installer if possible. Microsoft says Windows should look for and reinstall the adapter after a restart; if it does not, use the saved installer. If the adapter is absent from Device Manager, check the PC maker’s model-specific driver information. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps cover driver recovery.
Separate a PC problem from a network problem
- Try the same Wi-Fi network with another device. If that device also cannot connect, the router or internet service may be involved.
- If available, connect the affected PC to Ethernet and see whether it can get online. A wired connection helps distinguish Wi-Fi trouble from a broader network or service problem.
- If the laptop has no Ethernet port, a USB Ethernet adapter can provide a way to test a wired connection. It does not switch Airplane mode off or repair the wireless adapter.
Use Network reset only after simpler checks
Network reset is a later troubleshooting step, not an equivalent to toggling Airplane mode. It removes installed network adapters and their settings, then reinstalls the adapters with default settings after the PC restarts. You may need to reinstall or reconfigure VPN software or Hyper-V virtual switches afterward. Review Microsoft’s Ethernet and network reset guidance before using it.

When to contact the PC maker
If the wireless adapter remains missing or unusable after checking detection and drivers, consult the support information for your PC’s exact model. Hardware and driver instructions can differ by device. Surface-specific Wi-Fi guidance applies to Surface devices only; it should not be treated as a universal Windows 11 fix. See Microsoft’s Surface Wi-Fi troubleshooting page if you have a Surface.
