The upcoming Street Fighter movie is reportedly set to reference Evo Moment 37 with a cameo by fighting-game champion Justin Wong and a “37” tattoo. The detail comes from a pre-release report, not confirmation from the completed film. The reference points to a famous 2004 Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike match in which Daigo Umehara parried Chun-Li’s entire Super Art with almost no health left.

How the movie reportedly references Evo Moment 37

GamesRadar reports that Wong appears as a prisoner who comments on a fight, with a “37” tattoo serving as the nod to the match. The outlet says Capcom contacted Wong about the bit part. These are reported pre-release details; the reviewed sources do not independently verify the scene in the finished movie. Read GamesRadar’s report.

Capcom announced September 5, 2025, that the film was scheduled for release on October 16, 2026. That is the announced date, not confirmation that the schedule remains unchanged. Capcom’s announcement identifies the production partnership and release date.

What is Evo Moment 37?

With only a single pixel of vitality remaining, Umehara parried all 15 hits of Chun-Li’s Super Art, then won the match, according to Guinness World Records. Rather than block, a player using a parry must tap forward at the right moment. In this sequence, each successful parry kept Umehara alive through the attack and left him positioned to counter.

Why the parry sequence became so memorable

The pressure came from the situation as much as the execution: one mistake would have ended the round, and Wong’s multi-hit attack demanded a precisely timed response across its full sequence. The crowd’s reaction and the immediate reversal made the moment a lasting reference point for competitive fighting games.

Capcom’s 2012 explainer quotes commentator Seth Killian describing Umehara’s movement before Wong launched the Super Art: “If you watch the moments preceding Justin doing the super, Daigo is moving at pace with him across the screen as Justin dances back and forth,” Killian said. “Daigo is mirroring his actions. That’s not an accident. Daigo has made his play.” The observation frames the parry not simply as fast reactions, but as a response prepared in the context of the players’ movement. Capcom’s explainer reproduces Killian’s account.
