Capcom credits Shuhei Matsumoto as producer of Street Fighter 6, working with director Takayuki Nakayama on a concept proposal that reworked the series’ existing direction. The claim in the headline that he helped save the franchise from “dying” is not established by the Capcom material or the interview record reviewed for this article. What follows sets out what the company documents, where the evidence stops, and how to read the sales numbers.

Who Matsumoto and Nakayama are on this project

Capcom’s 2023 integrated report identifies Matsumoto as producer and Nakayama as director in its development material. The same report says the two team members submitted a concept proposal about five years earlier, one “filled with various ideas that turned the previous concept of Street Fighter on its head.” That wording is the report’s own description of the proposal, not a spoken remark by either man, so it should not be presented as a quote from an interview. Capcom’s development section of the 2023 integrated report is the primary source for this account.

The producer and director titles describe different jobs in a typical development team: the producer usually manages schedule, budget and team coordination, while the director leads creative and gameplay decisions. The sources reviewed do not spell out how the work was divided on Street Fighter 6, so that split should be read as general role description rather than a documented account of this project.

How the franchise’s history frames the project

Capcom’s production announcement on February 21, 2022 places the original Street Fighter in the arcade in 1987 and Street Fighter II in 1991. In the same announcement, Capcom reported 47 million cumulative shipments for the series worldwide. That is a franchise-wide shipment figure from 2022, so it is not the same measure as the game’s own sales and should not be compared with them directly. Capcom’s production announcement gives the wording and date.

#1 Best Overall
Street Fighter 6 - PS5
  • Classic Experience Built for a Modern Era: With all core gameplay modes present, plus two brand new modes and enhanced visuals, Street Fighter 6 redefines the classic fighting game genre.
  • Distinct Fighting Styles to Master: 18 diverse characters including legendary World Warriors and exciting brand new characters add their own flair to the game at launch, with more to be added post-launch.
  • Brand New Game Modes: The Street Fighter franchise continues to hone its skills and redefine the fighting genre with the introduction of three new foundational modes – Fighting Ground, World Tour and Battle Hub.
  • In-Game Commentating: Street Fighter’s first-ever Real-Time Commentary Feature, supported with subtitles in 13 languages, incorporates the voices of popular Fighting Game Community (FGC) commentators like Vicious and Aru directly into the game to narrate what is happening on-screen just like a real tournament.
  • Two New Control Schemes: Classic Controls returns alongside two brand new options: Modern Controls allow you to perform special attacks with simple button combinations and are designed for players who want to fight without memorizing and practicing special move button combinations first. Dynamic Controls only require a press of the Auto-Attack button to perform attacks and is a great control type to use when you have friends and family over for a quick, casual game.

Launch and platforms

Capcom released Street Fighter 6 on June 2, 2023. The platform list has changed in later material, as the table shows.

Platform Status in the Capcom material reviewed
PlayStation 5 Launch platform, June 2, 2023
PlayStation 4 Launch platform, June 2, 2023
Xbox Series X|S Launch platform, June 2, 2023
PC Launch platform, June 2, 2023
Nintendo Switch 2 Listed in Capcom’s June 2026 release; the material reviewed gives no separate launch date for this version

The sources do not compare performance or features across these platforms, so a platform choice should rest on the hardware you own and the control setup you prefer.

Modern Control Type and accessibility

Capcom describes Modern Control Type as an option that lets players perform special attacks without complex button combinations. The company also says it strengthened accessibility features in the game. Both points are part of Capcom’s explanation for the game’s broader appeal. Capcom does not isolate their effect on sales, and the sources do not show that either feature caused the commercial growth reported later.

CAPCOM Street Fighter 6 (PS5)
  • Stunning visuals and an all new battle system depicts the world of Street Fighter with unprecedented detail.
  • For the first time ever, SF6 provides an ever evolving immersive storytelling experience that gives power to the player to create their own World Warrior and truly engage in the Street Fighter Universe
  • SF6 provides the gold standard fighting experience for both casual and battle-tested pros can enjoy for years to come.
  • Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the international version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions. DLC content may not work unless using an EU Playstation account as stated this is an EU Import Region Free Version

Modern Control Type is most relevant to three kinds of player:

  • Players who want to execute special moves without learning motion inputs.
  • Players who have difficulty with complex button sequences for physical or other reasons.
  • Newcomers who want to start with the game’s core fighting rather than the input system.

Players who value the traditional input system may prefer the standard control type, and the sources do not measure how the two options compare in play.

What the sales figures show

Capcom has reported three figures that readers often conflate. They measure different things and come from different dates.

What the record does not establish

The “saved from dying” framing is the central gap. The Capcom development material and sales announcements do not describe the franchise as being in danger, and no statement that Matsumoto made that claim has been traced in the sources reviewed. Game Informer’s June 29, 2022 video interview features Nakayama and Matsumoto and discusses learning from the past, but the material reviewed does not show that the interview contains the headline’s wording or that either man used it. The Game Informer interview is worth reading in full before drawing conclusions from it.

If you encounter the claim elsewhere, check four things before repeating it:

  • The original interview or report in which it appears.
  • The speaker’s exact words and whether they were speaking for themselves or for the company.
  • The date, since the sales and franchise context changed after the 2023 launch.
  • Whether the remark concerns the franchise’s condition or the game’s commercial performance.

Without those details, the accurate version of the story is narrower: a producer and director proposed a reworked concept, the game launched in June 2023, and Capcom reports strong sales and expanded accessibility options.
