STRANGER THAN HEAVEN does not document a real-world visit to Hiroshima or Osaka. SEGA’s game settings are fictionalized versions of two places: Kure, presented as Hiroshima in 1929, and Minami, presented as Osaka in 1943. The publisher frames them as parts of an imagined Japan built from real cities and historical periods, not as independently verified recreations of history.

What “Hiroshima” and “Osaka” mean in the game

In SEGA’s September 17, 2026 announcement, the Hiroshima setting is Kure in 1929, while the Osaka setting is Minami in 1943. They are stops in the game’s fictional story, not reports of events happening in those cities today. SEGA’s May 7, 2026 overview describes the wider story as spanning five eras and cities across 50 years; the announced chronology places Kokura in 1915 before Kure, with Minami following Kure.

Because these are publisher descriptions, details below should be read as SEGA’s portrayal of the game world rather than an independent assessment of historical accuracy.

Kure, 1929: a port city shaped by shipbuilding

SEGA presents Kure as a naval port and shipbuilding city, with steep streets and waterways forming a layered urban landscape. The announcement places naval culture alongside entertainment and the energy and tension of the period. It also describes changing fashions: more Western-style clothing among residents and modern styles among women, presented as signs of overseas cultural influence.

#1 Best Overall

Kure continues activities introduced in the earlier Kokura setting and adds public baths and tehonbiki, a form of gambling. These details help make the town more than scenery: SEGA says walking, eating, and recreational activities affect protagonist Daido’s growth and can unlock skills.

Minami, 1943: entertainment under wartime strain

SEGA depicts Minami as a major entertainment district in wartime. Its public face includes theaters, but the setting also shows scarcity and controls, alongside dark row houses, wooden shops, and market-like backstreets. That contrast belongs to the game’s announced setting; it should not be taken as a claim about every resident or neighborhood in historical Osaka.

Daido grows into a larger impresario in Minami. Theaters connect to the game’s show-business system: players promote performances, choose songs and singers, stage shows, and work toward revenue targets.

How the settings connect to play

SEGA says that everyday activities—including walking, eating, and recreation—can shape Daido’s abilities and unlock skills, while seasons and presentation change by era and setting. The publisher’s September 17 announcement names several activities in the earlier Kokura section: arm wrestling, menko, beigoma, fishing, and streetcar travel. For Kure, it specifically calls out public baths and tehonbiki; for Minami, it links theaters to the show-business system. Not every activity is identified as unique to either Kure or Minami.

SEGA describes the seasonal and local presentation this way: “The seasons are set differently for each era and setting, so players can experience each town’s own presentation.”

Is the demo tour a visit to Hiroshima or Osaka?

No. RGG Studio’s September 30, 2026 notice describes a separate pre-release hands-on demo tour across 10 Japanese cities and 12 venues, beginning at Yodobashi Camera Multimedia Kyoto on October 11. Attendees can play the Tokyo Game Show 2026 demo, with a new demo planned from the November 14 Ikebukuro stop onward. The notice’s text does not list every city or venue, so it does not establish that Hiroshima or Osaka is on the tour schedule. These live events are separate from the fictionalized in-game settings.
