SIGIDWiki is a practical reference for comparing radio signals—not a decoder that conclusively explains every unusual transmission. It pairs example sounds with waterfall images and maintains separate listings for identified and unidentified signals. Compare a recording’s sound and visual pattern with those examples, then use details such as frequency, bandwidth, mode, modulation and location to narrow possible matches.
What is SIGIDWiki?
The Signal Identification Wiki describes its purpose this way: “This wiki is intended to help identify radio signals through example sounds and waterfall images.” Its entries are intended as reference material: a resemblance can point you toward a possible match, but it does not prove that two transmissions have the same source or purpose.
The wiki’s guide says many examples are received and recorded with software-defined radio (SDR) devices, including RTL-SDR, Airspy, SDRPlay, HackRF, BladeRF, Funcube Dongle and USRP. An SDR is equipment for receiving and recording radio signals; you do not need to own one just to browse the wiki. The guide also says anyone can edit the wiki and points readers to its editing, discussion and comment routes. Read the Signal Identification Wiki guide.

How do you use SIGIDWiki to look up a signal?
- Compare the capture. Listen to the recording and inspect its waterfall image—the visual display of signal activity over time and frequency—alongside examples in the wiki.
- Narrow the possibilities with attributes. Check the frequency range, bandwidth, mode, modulation and location associated with entries. The identified database exposes fields including title, frequency range, location, mode and modulation, with sorting options. Browse identified signals.
- Check whether the entry is identified or unresolved. A match in an identified entry is a useful lead, not independent confirmation that your recording is the same signal. Unidentified entries can help you find similar reports, but an unresolved listing does not establish what a signal is.
- Record the context before drawing a conclusion. Note where and when you received the signal, its frequency and bandwidth, and what the audio and waterfall actually show. Keep observed details separate from any theory about who transmitted it or why.
The wiki’s pages and categories make it possible to compare signals by attributes such as frequency, mode, modulation, bandwidth, location and activity or status. Those details are more useful together than an audio resemblance alone.
What makes an unknown-signal report useful?
The wiki asks contributors to provide as much useful context as possible for an unknown signal. Include the capture details and files that let another reader assess it rather than relying on a description such as “strange noise.”

- Best reception, full range coverage including AM/FM, Longwave & Shortwave with Single Side Band
- PLL synthesized digital dual conversion receiver with unparallelled sensitivity & selectivity
- 4 & 5 selectable bandwidth filters on AM and SSB respectively plus single Side Band receiver with 10 Hz tuning step
- Alarm clock plus sleep timer from 0-120 minutes
- 1 Year USA warranty.
- Frequency: Give the frequency at which you received it.
- Location: State where the reception occurred; location can help others compare reports.
- Bandwidth: Include the signal’s bandwidth if you can determine it.
- Waterfall image: Show the visual pattern, not just a written account of what it sounded like.
- MP3 audio sample: Provide a recording so readers can compare its sound with examples.
If you recognize a signal, the wiki invites you to edit its page or leave a note through the page discussion or comments on the unidentified-signals database. Visit the unidentified signals database.

SIGIDWiki has a “Numbers Stations and Enigma Stations” category for signals that may be connected to numbers-station activity or are considered enigmatic in behavior and content. The category provides descriptions and signal attributes; the label does not, by itself, verify an operator, purpose or origin. See the Numbers Stations and Enigma Stations category.

When a page or discussion proposes an explanation, distinguish the recorded characteristics from the interpretation. Describe an origin as suspected or reported unless it is confirmed, and do not treat unusual content as proof of a particular source.
