A working switch link, a visible SMB share, or an ONLINE pool can each look reassuring without proving that a storage service works end to end. In one reported migration, a Windows workload and two TrueNAS servers moved from a legacy flat network to a dual-top-of-rack (TOR) fabric on a workload VLAN, and SMB mappings were repointed. Failures nevertheless appeared at several different layers. The account is a single operator’s retrospective; its five-layer framework was assembled after the incident, not used as a live checklist during it.

Why did the cutover fail even though the network link was up?

The first gap was between physical link state and usable host networking. The operator reports that a switch showed a 10G link, but the Windows host had no loaded driver for its 10G adapter. Windows recognized only its onboard 1G interface. In a separate detail from the migration, the workload VLAN had not been added as a tagged interface to a TrueNAS LAGG.

Those are different failure points: one on the host, another in the server’s VLAN configuration. A switch-side link light or status is not proof that the intended host interface can reach the intended storage address.

  • Check that the operating system has recognized the intended adapter and loaded its driver.
  • Verify the VLAN tagging and interface configuration on both the host and TrueNAS side.
  • Test connectivity to the intended address from each endpoint, rather than relying on a switch’s link indication.

Why can an SMB share appear but remain inaccessible?

The operator reports that a share remained listed or advertised while its backing dataset was unavailable: the disks belonging to its pool were not visible while a JBOD shelf was off. A Windows client returned System error 67 has occurred. The network name cannot be found.

A share’s presence in a listing is not a successful read test. TrueNAS CORE 13.3 documentation describes SMB shares as paths backed by datasets and says the SMB service must be running for network access; that establishes a configuration and service distinction, not independent confirmation of every behavior in this incident. See the TrueNAS CORE 13.3 SMB documentation.

For a migration check, attempt to open the share and read a known file. That tests more of the path than confirming that a share name appears.

What if ZFS and the TrueNAS interface show different pool states?

After the disks reappeared, the author says zpool import showed pools available while the TrueNAS GUI still marked them OFFLINE. In the account, a GUI export or disconnect followed by an import refreshed the state. This is the author’s diagnosis and reported sequence, not a procedure established for every TrueNAS version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TrueNAS SCALE 26 Early Release documentation confirms that importing exported or disconnected pools is supported through the WebUI or API. It also warns that manual command-line imports can cause unexpected behavior and system issues. Because the documented release and the incident’s software version are not established as identical, use the guidance for the release actually installed rather than treating this account as a universal recipe. See TrueNAS SCALE 26 documentation.

What can happen to ZFS after a storage path interruption?

One pool in the account appeared UNAVAIL, with all eight members marked REMOVED. The author reports that camcontrol devlist still showed the disks, zdb -l showed intact labels, and SMART checks were clean. The operator says zpool clear brought that pool ONLINE.

The author’s instinct was that simultaneous member removal pointed to a path event, but the account provides no incident dataset to establish how often that interpretation is correct. It is a diagnostic clue from this case, not a measured probability or a reason to dismiss other causes. After the pool recovered, SMB still failed until the author restarted the service, attributing that remaining problem to stale handles. A recovered pool and a recovered application service are separate checks.

When should troubleshooting move below ZFS?

For another pool, the author says ZFS commands did not restore service. Kernel logs contained CAM Periph destroyed and SCSI transport errors; commands began hanging, and other pools were affected. Those symptoms led the operator to investigate the physical SAS/CAM path rather than continuing to treat the issue as only a pool-state problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That path includes the SAS controller or HBA, cables, JBOD backplane, and drive interfaces. In the reported recovery, the operator stopped SMB, powered off the TrueNAS server, fully power-cycled both JBOD shelves, and then restarted the server. This is what the author says resolved that incident; it should not be read as the only safe recovery for similar symptoms. Follow the applicable vendor guidance and assess the risk to other workloads before attempting hardware or power interventions.

How should a storage migration validation checklist be structured?

The five layers are useful as a way to avoid treating one healthy signal as proof of the whole service. They were assembled retrospectively from one reported event, not validated as a formal standard. For each layer, test the actual function named in the final column.

Layer Reassuring signal in the account Failure that signal did not rule out Validation to perform
Network reachability Switch reports a physical 10G link. The Windows host lacks a loaded 10G adapter driver, or the workload VLAN is absent as a tagged interface on the TrueNAS LAGG. Confirm interface recognition and VLAN configuration; test the intended address from both endpoints.
SMB service reachability The share is listed or advertised. The backing dataset is unavailable because its pool’s disks are not visible; client access fails. Open the share and read a known file, rather than checking the listing alone.
Middleware view versus ZFS state zpool import reports a pool as available. The TrueNAS GUI still shows it OFFLINE. Validate the discrepancy and use the procedure documented for the installed TrueNAS release.
ZFS state after path interruption Disks appear in device listings, labels are present, and SMART checks are clean. The pool may still be UNAVAIL with members REMOVED; SMB may remain unavailable after pool recovery. Assess pool state and service access separately; do not infer that one proves the other.
Physical SAS/CAM path Earlier ZFS-level checks do not reveal a pool fix. CAM/SCSI errors and hanging commands point to trouble lower in the device path. Review kernel logs and investigate the controller/HBA, cables, shelf backplane, and drive interfaces using vendor-appropriate procedures.

As the article’s author, JJozzieTech, put it: “If you’re running a storage migration and your validation checklist has one entry per host, you have four fewer entries than you need.” The account does not establish that every migration needs exactly five checks; its practical point is to validate distinct layers, not just count hosts.
