Your Samsung TV keeps buffering when it cannot get video data steadily enough to play. The cause may be weak Wi-Fi, a busy or unreliable internet connection, a streaming app or service problem, or—less often—a TV software or settings issue. Check whether the trouble affects every app and other devices first; that points you toward the right fix without jumping to a factory reset.
First, find out whether the problem is the TV, your network, or one app
Try a different streaming app on the TV, then check another phone or computer using the same home network. These comparisons narrow down the cause:
- Several apps buffer, and other devices struggle too: Suspect the internet connection, router, service outage, or network congestion.
- Several apps buffer on the TV, but other devices work: Focus on the TV’s connection to the router, its network settings, or TV software.
- Only one app buffers: The app or its streaming provider may be having trouble. Check the provider’s service status or support before changing router settings.
These are diagnostic clues, not proof of a specific fault. A provider-server problem is one possible explanation when a particular app opens but playback fails, as Samsung notes in its app troubleshooting guidance.
Check Network Status on the TV
Samsung’s Network Status check can help show whether the connection is failing between the TV and router or between the router and the internet. On many recent models, open Home/Menu → Settings → All Settings → Connection → Network → Network Status. Menu names and paths vary by model and software version; consult the TV’s manual or Samsung’s model support page if you cannot find the setting.

Use the result alongside your other-device test. If the TV-to-router link is the weak point, investigate Wi-Fi signal or try Ethernet. If the router-to-internet link is failing—or other devices also have trouble—restart the modem and router and check with your internet provider for an outage or unstable service. Improve the TV’s connection to the router
Try Ethernet if you can
If the TV and router can be connected safely, test a wired Ethernet connection. Samsung says Ethernet can provide more stable speeds than Wi-Fi, particularly for high-quality video streaming. If the TV is already wired, inspect the cable and its connections, or test with another cable if available. Ethernet can help with a weak or inconsistent wireless link, but it will not fix an ISP outage, network congestion beyond your home, or a problem limited to one app.

Adjust Wi-Fi placement and band
Distance, walls, other obstacles, and network load can weaken or disrupt the TV’s Wi-Fi connection. If Ethernet is impractical, try moving the router closer to the TV or reducing obstructions. Samsung’s Canada support guide recommends moving the router closer when a wired connection is not possible (Samsung connection steps).
If both the TV and router support 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, test each band. Samsung says 5 GHz normally offers more speed but less range than 2.4 GHz, so the better choice depends on distance and obstacles. A band that performs well near the router may be less reliable through walls or over a longer distance. Check the TV’s model specifications if you are unsure which bands it supports.

Check whether other devices are using the connection
Temporarily pause downloads or disconnect other devices to see whether playback improves. If it does, competing network use may be contributing to the problem. The available bandwidth is shared, and performance can fluctuate with simultaneous use and internet-provider congestion.
Check whether your internet service can support the stream
Samsung UK gives at least 25 Mbps for 4K streaming as a general minimum recommendation, not a guarantee of buffer-free playback. Actual requirements vary by streaming platform, simultaneous use, and connected devices. A connection’s speed can also fluctuate, so a single speed result does not rule out intermittent problems. If multiple devices or services are affected, restart the modem and router, then check for an outage or service instability with your internet provider. If the trouble is isolated to one app, investigate that service before assuming your internet plan is the cause.

When other apps play normally, avoid changing the whole home network until you have checked the affected app and its provider. Check for a service issue, then look for an app update or reinstall option on the TV. Samsung’s app guidance also recommends checking TV software and reinstalling an affected app where appropriate (Samsung app troubleshooting). Available app-management options vary by TV model and app.

Try TV troubleshooting steps in order
If the connection checks do not resolve the issue, move through these lower-risk steps before considering a factory reset. Samsung’s UK support guidance includes TV care, software, restart, and network-setting checks; the precise menus differ by model.
- Restart the modem and router if the connection appears unstable across devices. Allow them to reconnect before testing playback again.
- Cold-boot the TV. A cold boot fully restarts the TV rather than simply putting it in standby. Follow the instructions for your model in its manual or support page.
- Check for TV software updates. Install an available update using the TV’s software-update settings, following the model-specific instructions.
- Check the TV’s date and time if apps or network functions behave unexpectedly; Samsung’s UK troubleshooting guidance includes this check.
- Reset the TV’s network settings if the TV remains the only device with a connection problem. You will need to reconnect it to Wi-Fi afterward.
- Reserve a factory reset for persistent problems. It clears TV settings and requires setup again, so use the model-specific instructions and treat it as a last resort.
Why the right fix depends on your TV and setup
The question does not identify a TV model, software version, streaming app, router, internet plan, or region. Samsung’s menu paths and Wi-Fi capabilities vary across models, and app options can differ too. Use the exact model’s manual or Samsung support page for instructions when a menu or feature does not match your TV. Diagnose the failing link before replacing equipment: an Ethernet test can identify a wireless problem, while a second app and another device help distinguish network trouble from an app-specific issue.
