Start in your phone’s Battery settings: find which apps or system activity used the most power, then address the largest unusual source. Lower screen brightness, reduce screen-on time, limit unnecessary background activity, and use Battery Saver or Low Power Mode when you need more runtime. If the phone still drains quickly, check battery health and consider manufacturer-approved service. Menu names and features vary by model and software version.
Find out what is using your battery
Check the battery report before changing several settings at once. It can show whether power went to individual apps or system activity and, on some phones, distinguish use while the screen was on from background use.
On iPhone
- Open Settings > Battery.
- Review battery usage by app and system activity. Where available, compare onscreen activity, background activity, and low cellular coverage.
- Tap or inspect an app with unusually high use to understand whether it was active on screen or working in the background.

Android menu paths differ by manufacturer, model, and software version. Open your device’s Battery settings and review battery use by app; for exact steps, consult the device maker’s instructions. Google’s Android battery guidance covers general ways to reduce use.

Reduce the biggest avoidable sources of drain
Limit an app’s background activity
If one app is using an unusual amount of power in the background, reduce its use or background activity using the controls available on your phone. Review location access and notifications if they are relevant to what the app does. Background work can include directions, music, photo syncing, and mail fetching, so check whether the activity is expected before restricting it.
Cut screen demand
- Lower screen brightness, or use automatic brightness if it suits your needs.
- Shorten the screen timeout so the display turns off sooner when idle.
- Reduce unnecessary screen-on time, especially during prolonged use of demanding apps.
Use a battery-saving mode when runtime matters
Turn on Battery Saver on Android or Low Power Mode on iPhone when you need the charge to last longer. These modes can limit background work, features, services, or visual effects; some notifications and updates may be delayed. They can improve runtime, but do not identify or repair a worn battery.

Check whether conditions explain the sudden change
Weak signal and demanding activities
Weak cellular coverage can increase battery use. Prolonged navigation, video streaming, hotspot use, calls while traveling, and graphics-heavy games also place sustained demands on a phone. If the drain coincides with one of these conditions, check usage again after it ends.
Heat
A hot phone can lose charge faster even while idle. Google warns that heat-related drain can damage the battery. Keep the device cool and out of hot environments; avoid continuing a demanding activity if the phone is overheating.

Google’s Android battery guidance includes advice on keeping the phone cool and reducing sustained high-demand use. Some steps apply only to Android 13 or later, and device-maker instructions may differ.
Recent setup or software update
After setup or an update, background processing and optimization may temporarily increase battery use. Check the battery report again after that activity settles, rather than treating one unusually heavy period as proof that the battery has failed. Apple’s rapid-drain guidance describes features and insights that depend on iOS version, including Daily Usage and Adaptive Power on iOS 26 or later and certain Insights on iOS 18 or later.

Check battery health if the problem continues
If the drain remains unusual after you have addressed high app use, screen demand, and temporary conditions, check the phone’s battery-health diagnostic and follow the manufacturer’s service advice. On iPhone, Apple says to consider service if Battery Health displays “Service.” Samsung notes that repeated charging and discharging gradually reduces battery capacity.

If service is recommended, confirm the exact model and compatible repair options with the manufacturer or an authorized provider. Battery replacement is model-specific, so do not assume a generic replacement part will fit or be suitable.
