A React app can use MediaPipe Pose Landmarker to read your webcam and show a gentle reminder when your head or shoulders drift away from a position you have chosen. What the model produces is a set of body-landmark coordinates. It does not produce a posture grade, a diagnosis, or a universal definition of good posture, so the build should treat its output as a prompt to check your position, not a verdict on it.
What the prototype does and does not do
The prototype watches a webcam feed, estimates where the body’s landmarks sit in each frame, derives a few geometric measurements from them, and shows an adjustable cue when those measurements cross a threshold the user sets. Three limits shape every design decision that follows:
- Landmarks are geometry. A landmark is an estimated point, such as an ear or a shoulder. Distances and angles between points are observations about the image, not clinical measurements.
- There is no universal slouch line. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) says there is no single correct posture or arrangement of components that will fit everyone. The default threshold in any prototype is therefore an arbitrary starting point that users should be able to change.
- The app cannot judge pain, injury, or health risk. Nothing in the official MediaPipe or OSHA material supports using a webcam to detect those conditions, and the interface should not imply it does.
What MediaPipe Pose Landmarker returns
Google’s Pose Landmarker documentation describes a model that accepts three kinds of input and returns a fixed set of outputs. The model tracks 33 body landmarks.

| World landmarks | 3D coordinates in meters | Depth-aware checks, though camera angle still limits accuracy |

Because the segmentation mask is optional, a posture prototype should request only the landmarks it reads. Every extra output adds work to each frame.

Turning landmarks into posture cues
The official sources establish which landmarks and outputs exist. They do not validate a slouch threshold or a classification algorithm. The cue logic below is therefore an implementation choice, not a Google recommendation or a clinical finding.
Head-forward offset
Compare the horizontal position of an ear landmark with the shoulder landmark on the same side of the body, and divide the difference by the shoulder width in the same frame. Dividing by a body-scale reference keeps the measurement roughly stable when the user sits closer to or farther from the camera. The user-facing control should be a single slider labelled in relative terms, not a degree value that implies precision.
Shoulder level
Compare the vertical positions of the left and right shoulder landmarks. A persistent difference can indicate a tilted seat, a raised arm on a desk, or simply a camera placed off-centre. Because the cue is about asymmetry, the interface should explain that the most common cause is the setup, not the person.

Measure the angle of the line from the shoulder midpoint to the hip midpoint against vertical. Hips are often partly hidden by a desk, so the app should drop this cue when the hip landmarks have low visibility rather than guess.

Smoothing, confidence, and hysteresis
A single frame should never trigger a reminder. Three checks reduce false alarms:
- Confidence gate: skip any frame where the landmarks you need report low visibility or presence.
- Temporal smoothing: average each measurement over a short rolling window, such as the last few seconds of valid frames, before comparing it to the threshold.
- Hysteresis: require the measurement to cross the threshold by a margin before a cue starts, and to return inside a slightly looser margin before it clears.
The window length, margin, and default threshold are settings to tune on your own camera, not values the official documentation provides.
Keeping the browser responsive
Google’s web guide for Pose Landmarker warns that video detection calls run synchronously and can block the main thread. In a React app that means the page can stutter, which is the same thread that handles rendering, input, and the cue animation. The guide identifies web workers as a way to move inference off the UI thread.
The trade-off is complexity. Running detection on the main thread is simpler to write and debug. A worker adds message passing, frame transfer, and error handling, but keeps the interface responsive while inference runs. The documentation supports the blocking concern and the worker option; it does not quantify how much responsiveness a worker gains, so measure both approaches on your own hardware before choosing.

- Vibration Reminder: our smart posture corrector with vibration posture reminder function, when you start to hump, it will immediately send out a gentle vibration reminder, and continue until your back is straight, not in the hunchback
- Adjustable Angle: Our smart hunchback corrector with adjustable correction angle function, 5 degrees to 50 degrees free adjustment, for example, you set it to 20 degrees, then when your hunchback arc to 20 degrees, it will immediately vibrate to remind you!
- Real-Time Posture Detection: The smart posture corrector accurately captures the wearer's posture through angle and tension sensing, and vibrates to remind you in time.
- Intelligent Counting Display: the smart hunchback improver has a screen counting function, you can check the number of times you sit in bad posture every day, clearly see the severity of the hunchback, and also see the corrective effect after wearing it for a period of time.
- Newly Upgraded Six Functions: intelligent vibration reminder, angle free adjustment, ergonomic design, memory counting function, strap elasticity adjustment, charging long life!
A worker-based flow for the prototype looks like this:
- Create the landmarker inside a dedicated worker and load the model once at startup.
- Capture a frame from the video element on a timer, and transfer it to the worker as an
ImageBitmaprather than copying pixel data. - Run detection in the worker and post back only the landmark values the cue logic needs.
- Apply the confidence gate, smoothing, and hysteresis on the React side, where the interface state lives.
- Close each transferred bitmap after use so memory does not grow across a long session.
Keep the frame rate modest. Checking posture does not require every camera frame; a few analyses per second is enough to catch a slump that lasts several seconds. Any specific frame rate on a specific laptop should be confirmed by measurement rather than assumed.
Privacy: what “on-device” does and does not promise
What Google’s MediaPipe terms say
Google states that input processing for MediaPipe happens on-device and that input images and video are not sent to Google servers. The same terms say the APIs may contact Google for bug fixes, model updates, and hardware-accelerator compatibility information, and may send performance and utilization metrics. Google also states that developers are responsible for obtaining informed consent for its processing of metrics data where the law requires it.

A defensible sentence for the project’s documentation is: “Pose detection runs in the browser through MediaPipe, and camera frames are not sent to Google servers for that processing.” Avoid a broader claim that the app sends no data anywhere.

What the app itself must disclose
The MediaPipe terms cover MediaPipe. They do not cover the behaviour of your application. Before publishing, document the following for the finished build:
- Whether any camera frame, thumbnail, or landmark history is stored, and for how long.
- Where settings such as thresholds and window lengths are kept, for example in
localStorage, and whether they leave the device. - Whether analytics, crash reporting, or error logging runs, and what it sends.
- Which network requests load the application code and the model file, since those requests reveal that the page was opened even though video is not uploaded.
If the app stores nothing and sends no telemetry, say that exactly, and verify it with the browser’s network panel on a clean profile. The privacy claim should describe what the code does, not what the framework promises in general.

The neutral position the cues can reference
OSHA’s description of neutral computer posture includes these elements:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Hands, wrists, and forearms straight and roughly parallel to the floor.
- A level, forward-facing head that is generally in line with the torso.
- Relaxed shoulders.
- Elbows close to the body.
- Feet supported by the floor or a footrest.
The webcam can observe only part of this list. Head and shoulder cues map to the head and shoulder items. Wrist, elbow, and foot positions are outside the camera’s reliable view, so the cue text should not claim to check them.

Monitor placement
OSHA recommends a monitor directly in front of the user, at least 20 inches away, with the top line of the screen at or below eye level. OSHA also describes adjustable supports and notes that a misaligned screen can encourage awkward posture. These are workstation recommendations, not a validated threshold for an AI classifier, so the setup guidance belongs next to the app’s settings, not inside its scoring logic.
If a reader needs to raise or lower a display to meet that guidance, an adjustable monitor stand is one optional way to do it. The software does not require one.
Making reminders nonjudgmental
Because no single arrangement fits everyone, the interface should:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Let users switch cues on or off independently.
- Offer a calibration step that records the user’s own comfortable position as the reference, rather than a fixed ideal.
- Use neutral wording such as “Head is further forward than your saved setup,” not “Bad posture detected.”
- Pause automatically when no person is detected, so an empty chair never triggers a reminder.
Testing the prototype and its limits
The official sources reviewed do not establish a clinically validated slouch classifier, accuracy on any particular camera, or performance on any particular device. They also contain no published study linking webcam posture reminders to health outcomes, so the project should not cite one. Any claim about frame rate, latency, or detection quality needs measurements from the finished application.
When you test, record the following for each device and camera:
- Browser name and version, operating system, and hardware.
- Which model variant you loaded. Google’s documentation presents Lite, Full, and Heavy options; the official model selection guidance describes their size and complexity, while speed and detection quality on your hardware are not stated and must be measured.
- Main-thread versus worker timings, and whether the interface stays responsive during detection.
- False-positive and false-negative counts for each cue across several seated sessions, with the camera’s position and lighting noted.
Use the results to set defaults that are honest about their limits: a starting threshold that users can change, a visible note that the camera sees only part of the body, and a clear statement that the cues are reminders rather than assessments.
