To measure an AI agent’s real cost, total every model request in a task—not just the final response. Include retries, tool-related calls, and delegated-agent work; track token categories and model identity; then compare your estimate with provider usage and billing records. A missing usage value is unknown, not zero.
Why the final answer is not the whole bill
An agent can make several model requests, call tools, retry failed work, or hand part of a task to another agent before it returns one answer. Each model request can add token charges, while tools, sandbox compute, and third-party services may add separate costs. OpenAI’s Agents API documentation on observability and usage advises accounting for root-agent and subagent work, including retries, and applicable tool and service charges.
That means a visible response is not a reliable proxy for the work behind it. A task-level total helps with budgeting, but request-level records are what let you find which step—or repeated attempt—drove the cost.

Start by choosing a unit tied to an outcome: a completed task, user request, workflow, or customer. Assign it a stable run or task ID, then carry that ID through model requests, tool calls, retries, and delegated work. Traces can show model steps, tools, and delegated agents, but propagating a stable identifier is an implementation choice that makes those events easier to attribute.
#1 Best Overall
Keep the task total and its constituent requests. The total answers “What did this workflow cost?”; the request breakdown answers “Where did the cost come from?”
Instrument each model request and execution step
Capture request-level usage
Store one record per model request. Useful fields include provider, model, request or run ID, timestamp, input and output token counts, cached-input and reasoning-token details when available, status, and retry or attempt number. The OpenAI Agents SDK usage guide describes both aggregated usage and per-request entries; usage can include calls that lead to tool calls or handoffs.
Rank #2
Do not assume an adapter supplies every usage field automatically. The SDK documentation notes that some backends may require usage inclusion to be enabled. Retaining the raw provider usage payload can help distinguish a reported zero from a missing value.

Trace the run in order
Keep an ordered trace of model and tool steps, including duration, status, and each step’s association with the root or delegated agent. OpenAI’s tracing documentation describes recorded inputs and outputs, tool arguments and results when available, timestamps, durations, and statuses. This helps you inspect failures and repeated work; a trace is evidence of execution, not by itself proof of the amount ultimately billed.
Calculate a transparent estimate
For each request, apply the price that matches its model and token categories. Input, cached input, output, and reasoning usage may have different rates, so a single blended token count can hide meaningful differences. Store the price table and effective date alongside each estimate; otherwise, changing rates can silently alter how historical runs appear.
Record non-token charges separately where your platform supports them. LangSmith documents automatic token-based cost calculation when usage, model or provider, and pricing are available, as well as manual cost entries for other run types such as tools and retrieval. See its cost-tracking guide. Such estimates depend on the usage and pricing configuration supplied.
Rank #4
Do not rank models by per-token price alone. OpenAI’s token guide explains that models can tokenize the same text differently and produce different amounts of output or reasoning. A cheaper token rate may therefore yield a higher total for a representative task.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesReconcile estimates with provider records
Compare your instrumented totals with provider usage over matching time windows and scopes. OpenAI’s Usage Dashboard displays usage in UTC, supports project selection, and offers usage exports. Response usage fields vary by endpoint, so check the relevant endpoint’s details and investigate gaps—particularly for streamed or otherwise incomplete usage.
Keep project-level estimates distinct from organization-level items where the provider reports them separately. A trace can explain which steps occurred, while the provider dashboard and billing records provide a separate reconciliation view. If usage is absent or later changes, mark it unknown or provisional rather than treating it as zero or a final amount.

| Approach | What it contributes | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Provider response usage | Request-level token counts and endpoint-specific usage details. | A response count may not capture the full agent workflow or costs beyond model tokens. OpenAI Usage Dashboard documentation: platform.openai.com/usage. |
| SDK run accounting | Aggregated run totals and, in the Agents SDK, per-request entries. | Adapters may omit usage unless configured, and aggregates alone do not identify cost drivers. Agents SDK usage guide. |
| Tracing | Step sequence, model and tool activity, status, duration, and recorded data for investigating repeated work. | Usage can be delayed or unknown, and trace details do not establish a final bill. OpenAI observability documentation. |
| Third-party cost tracking | LangSmith documents automatic model-cost calculation and manual costs for other run types. | Results depend on supplied usage and pricing configuration; check current product coverage and terms. LangSmith cost-tracking guide. |
When evaluating an approach, check its coverage of retries and delegated work, request-level detail, token categories, non-model costs, aggregation by task or customer, provider reconciliation, retention and privacy controls, and its own instrumentation or service cost. No single best tool for every deployment is established by these capability descriptions.
Quick Recap
Common accounting mistakes to avoid
- Counting only the final generation: include all model requests and delegated work tied to the task.
- Turning missing usage into zero: preserve an unknown or provisional state and reconcile when later data becomes available.
- Assuming cached input is free: the cited Agents API guide treats cached input as billable; applicable models may also have cache-write charges. Available usage fields may not expose enough detail to calculate every such charge exactly.
- Leaving non-model charges out: tools, sandbox compute, and third-party services can contribute costs beyond tokens.
- Comparing unlike dashboard scopes: align time windows, UTC timestamps, project selection, and organization-level versus project-level reporting.
- Choosing a model by nominal token rate: test representative tasks because tokenization and output or reasoning volume affect the total.
A practical measurement checklist
- Define the cost unit and assign it a stable task or run ID.
- Propagate that ID through every request, tool step, retry, and delegated agent.
- Persist per-request model identity, token categories, status, timestamp, and attempt information, retaining raw usage where possible.
- Keep ordered traces of model and tool activity with duration and status.
- Apply dated, model-specific rates to the recorded token categories; record other charges separately.
- Compare task estimates with provider usage and billing for matching scopes and time windows, and leave missing usage marked unknown.
