You generally cannot selectively block a neighbor’s Wi-Fi, and using a jammer is not a safe or lawful fix in the United States. If your connection is slow or unreliable, check your signal and local channel congestion, then adjust your own router and device placement. Those steps address the causes you can control without disrupting anyone else’s network.
Can you block a neighbor’s Wi-Fi signal?
Not selectively with ordinary router settings. A nearby network may add congestion, but weak coverage, walls, poor router placement, or other electronics can also cause Wi-Fi problems. Check your own connection before assuming a neighbor is responsible.

Do not use or buy a Wi-Fi jammer. In a 2015 order, the Federal Communications Commission cited its warning that “Wi-Fi Blocking is Prohibited” and that people or businesses intentionally interfering with Wi-Fi hotspots could face enforcement action. GPS.gov states that US federal law prohibits operating, marketing, or selling jamming equipment that interferes with authorized radio communications, and says there is no residential-use exemption. These are US federal sources; laws elsewhere may differ.

How to improve your Wi-Fi without blocking another network
1. Measure before changing settings
Test your connection in several rooms and note the results before making adjustments. Repeat the same tests after each change so you can tell whether it helped. Microsoft recommends checking both nearby access points and the strength of your own signal when choosing a channel.

2. Check placement, distance, and obstacles
Place the router in a central, elevated, relatively unobstructed location. Move a device closer to the router if possible. Keep the router away from common interference sources such as microwaves, power cables, fluorescent lights, wireless video cameras, and cordless phones. Walls and other obstacles can weaken the signal even when a nearby network is not the cause.
3. Compare Wi-Fi bands your devices support
Band names alone do not guarantee better performance in every home. Compare the options where you actually use your devices:

| Band | Range and walls | Speed and congestion | Compatibility and when to try it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.4 GHz | Generally reaches farther and passes through obstacles better. | Typically slower, with fewer non-overlapping channels. | Often useful for range and compatibility; try it when a device is farther from the router. |
| 5 GHz | Generally has shorter range and weaker wall penetration than 2.4 GHz. | Can offer faster throughput and may be less congested. | Try it for nearby devices when both router and device support it. |
| 6 GHz | Generally has shorter range than lower bands. | Can offer high speeds and lower congestion nearby. | Requires compatible router and client devices; availability and performance depend on the equipment and location. |
These are general tradeoffs, not a prediction for a particular home. Microsoft’s guidance describes the bands this way; actual performance depends on signal strength, obstacles, nearby networks, and device support. Apple also recommends reducing sources of wireless interference.
4. Inspect nearby channel use
A Wi-Fi analyzer, if available, can show nearby access points and help compare channel use. On 2.4 GHz, Microsoft identifies channels 1, 6, and 11 as non-overlapping choices; test the available options and compare both congestion and your own signal strength. On 5 GHz, choose a channel with fewer nearby access points for the signal strength you receive. Router channel options vary by model and location, and automatic channel selection may help but is not guaranteed to choose the best option for every spot in your home.

5. Consider an extender only for a coverage gap
If the router cannot be moved and a distant room has weak coverage, an extender may address that coverage problem. It does not block a neighbor’s network or selectively stop its signal.
Secure your network separately
Wi-Fi security controls who can access your network; it does not prevent neighboring radio signals from reaching your home. The Federal Trade Commission recommends using WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal, setting unique Wi-Fi and router administrator passwords, and keeping router software current. These measures protect your network rather than reduce radio interference.

When to contact your provider
If connection problems persist after checking placement, bands, channels, and equipment, contact your internet or wireless provider for help troubleshooting the service. GPS.gov advises investigating suspected jamming with the provider and ruling out ordinary equipment or connectivity problems first. If deliberate jamming remains a concern after that troubleshooting, GPS.gov says a complaint can be submitted to the FCC.
