Instead of adding a large icon package to your application, you can search a hosted catalog, fetch only the SVG files you select, and commit those files to your repository. Aria Icons is one project built around that workflow. Its command-line tool writes chosen icons into a project, and its MCP (Model Context Protocol) server lets compatible coding agents search and fetch from the same catalog. This article explains when that approach makes sense, how the commands fit together, what the figures published about the catalog do and do not establish, and which checks to run before adopting it.
When this workflow fits and when it does not
The workflow is aimed at teams that need a handful of icons drawn from several collections. A typical request looks like this: a house icon from one set, an arrow from another, a settings gear from a third, and the GitHub logo from a brand-mark collection. Installing four packages for four icons is the situation the project author calls a “fat install.” That phrase is the author’s characterization, not a measured package-size comparison.
A single-family package remains the simpler choice when your product depends on one visual style and uses most of that family’s icons. Consistent stroke weight, corner rounding, and naming are real benefits, and a package maintained by one design team delivers them without extra process. The Aria Icons approach trades that built-in consistency for control over exactly which assets appear in your code.

How the main options compare
The table below compares four ways of getting icons into a web project. The trade-offs come from the project documentation and the author’s article. None of them has been benchmarked against the others in the sources.

| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off described in the sources |
|---|---|---|
| One collection package, such as Lucide | Teams that want one cohesive style and a familiar install workflow | Less suited to codebases that mix sets or need many one-off brand marks. The author describes the cost of this as a “fat install,” which is not a measured size figure. |
| Iconify | Teams that want a broad catalog | According to the author, a separate step is still needed to place chosen icons into the repository as source files and to expose them to agents. |
| Manual SVG copy and paste | A few icons, with no dependency at all | No built-in catalog search and no shared source of truth. The author warns of drift and of duplicate or incorrect assets. |
| Aria Icons | Teams that want cross-collection search, selected SVGs written as files, and an MCP interface for agents | You adopt a workflow, not one visual identity. Retrieval depends on the hosted catalog and API that the project operates. |
Two claims are not supported by the evidence and should not appear in your own write-up: that this approach reduces bundle size, install time, CI duration, or agent error rates. The documentation does establish one narrower point. The CLI downloads the icons you request rather than shipping the full icon index inside the npm package. The project’s documentation is at https://github.com/LeulAria/Aria-Icons.
The workflow in five steps
- Search visually when style matters. Use the hosted catalog at https://icons.leularia.com/ to compare candidates from different collections side by side before you choose.
- Agree on identifiers. Record the exact
collection:namevalues, such aslucide:house, in a ticket or in your design-system specification. Stable identifiers make later audits possible. - Retrieve the icon. Use
getto print an SVG oraddto write files into the project. - Review the file. Check the SVG’s markup, its license, and where it came from. Confirm it fits your team’s sanitization and styling practices.
- Commit it. The SVG is now a reviewable asset in pull requests. Periodically audit older usage, or migrate it if the team needs one collection.
Command reference and quickstart
The author’s quickstart runs in this order:
npx -y aria-icons@latest setup
npx aria-icons search house
npx aria-icons get lucide:house
npx aria-icons add lucide:house tabler:arrow-up thesvg:github
These commands come from the author’s article and the project README. They have not been verified against a current release in this article, so run npx -y aria-icons@latest --help and compare the output with the README before you put them into team documentation. The project documents the package name aria-icons, with installation through npm and Bun.
setup
The quickstart runs setup first. The sources do not describe what it writes into your project, so read its prompts and output before accepting any changes.
Rank #2
- 2 in 1: USB C + USB 3.0, 32GB usb c flash drive has dual ports, usb 3.0 port is applied to all devices which have usb 3.0 interface and usb c port is widely used in all Android smartphones with OTG function
- High Speed USB 3.0: Read speed up to 90 MB/s, Write speed up to 30 MB/s, the speed of USB 3.0 interface is faster than USB 2.0, save time to wait, increases work productivity. Note: Speed will be limited if you use the USB key in the USB 2.0 interface
- Large Compatibility: The USB 3.0 Connector is compatible with USB 3.0 & USB 2.0 backward USB 1.1 devices, such as Laptop, Desktop, Car Audio, Tablet, TV, Speakers, Projector. USB-C port is compatible with all Android Smartphones
- Expand Storage: Good performance in storing, transferring and sharing digital data with families, friends, colleagues, customers. It can expand the capacity of smartphone, you can watch movies or share pictures when you go on vacation with your family
- Note: Make sure your smartphone is equipped with OTG function and need to open OTG function in Settings when you plug memory stick, then you can transfer easily data bewteen different devices
search and get
search house finds candidates across the catalog by keyword. get lucide:house returns one icon by its identifier, which makes it useful for previewing an SVG before you commit it.
add
add takes one or more identifiers and writes the selected SVG files into your project. The example adds three icons from three different collections in one command. Because the files land in your repository, the diff in your pull request shows the real asset rather than a version number.
doctor, suggest, and migrate
The author also uses three commands on an existing codebase that mixes icon libraries:

npx aria-icons doctor
npx aria-icons suggest src/
npx aria-icons migrate --to lucide
- doctor is run as a diagnostic step. The sources do not detail its checks, so treat its findings as a starting list.
- suggest is run against
src/in the author’s example. The sources do not describe its output format, so review each suggestion by hand. - migrate –to lucide is presented for consolidating a mixed-library codebase onto one collection. Read the complete diff before you commit it, and run your visual regression checks afterward.
Connecting a coding agent through MCP
The MCP server exposes search and fetch to compatible coding agents, so an agent can select real catalog identifiers rather than inventing icon names. The project documents two ways to connect.
Local stdio configuration
The README gives a local configuration that starts the server with npx. The entry looks like this in most MCP clients:
{
"mcpServers": {
"aria-icons": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "aria-icons"]
}
}
}
The key name aria-icons is a label you choose. Where your client stores its configuration file is specific to that client, so consult its documentation.
Rank #4
- 2-in-1 Dual Design: Features both USB-C and USB-A connectors, making it compatible with phones, tablets, MacBooks, PCs, and laptops-no adapter needed
- Wide Compatibility: Works seamlessly with USB A and USB C devices, ensuring reliable file transfers across smartphones, computers, and more
- Ample Storage Options: Available in 16GB/32GB/64GB/128GB providing plenty of space for photos, videos, music, and documents
- Portable & Lightweight: Compact and durable design for travel, school, or daily use-take your files anywhere
- Plug-and-Play Convenience: No software or drivers required; simply insert into USB-C or USB-A ports and start transferring files instantly
Remote HTTP endpoint
The README also documents a remote endpoint at https://icons.leularia.com/api/mcp. Confirm that the endpoint responds and that your client supports remote HTTP servers before you rely on it. The project documentation does not establish client-by-client support in detail.
MCP access does not make an agent’s output reliable. It gives the agent a search and fetch path into the same catalog. You still need to review the SVG the agent proposes, because the sources report no error-rate or reliability data for this setup. The author’s positioning line is: “Agents get truth; humans keep commit hygiene.” It describes the goal the author wants, not a measured result.
Reading the icon counts
Three published figures describe the size of the catalog, and they differ. Each one has a different source and date, so do not treat them as one stable number.

- About 340k SVGs. An approximate figure in the author’s article, published on DEV Community on 2026-09-23.
- 1,000,000 SVG icons. The headline in the repository README, accessed in 2026. It is the project’s marketing figure, not a verified exact count.
- 973,920 icons. The count shown on the hosted site at https://icons.leularia.com/ when it was observed on 2026-10-07. The number changes as the catalog changes.
None of these counts shows how much dependency weight your project avoids. For that you would need to measure your own build.
Licensing, provenance, and accessibility checks
Each icon comes from a collection with its own terms. The project documentation lists vendored collections such as Lucide, Tabler, and Heroicons, theSVG brand marks, and Iconify collections. The sources do not establish that all of these share a single license, so check each one before you commit it. Use this checklist when you add an icon:
- Record the collection and the license for each identifier you add.
- Keep brand marks, such as the GitHub logo, under the trademark rules that apply to your product, separately from the collection license.
- Confirm that the SVG markup passes your sanitization rules, particularly if icons come from user-facing or third-party content.
- Add an accessible name where the icon carries meaning. For example, use
aria-labelon a button that contains only a gear icon. Decorative icons should be marked witharia-hidden="true". - Check that the icon’s stroke width and size match the rest of the interface, since mixing sets is exactly what this workflow makes easy.
Limits and trade-offs
The workflow has three costs you should weigh before adopting it. First, search and retrieval depend on the hosted catalog and API. If the service is unavailable, your commands will fail, but icons already committed to your repository continue to work. Second, the project’s claims about catalog size and convenience come from the project and the author, and no independent benchmark of these claims was found in the sources. Third, a catalog with a million entries is only useful if your team has rules for choosing among them. Agree on a short list of approved collections and naming conventions to keep the repository from drifting.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The approach suits teams that treat icons as reviewed assets, that need brand marks alongside general glyphs, and that want coding agents to draw from a real catalog. Teams with one visual system and no need for mixed sources will usually find a single well-maintained package simpler.
The article that introduced this approach is available on DEV Community, and the project’s documentation is in the Aria Icons repository.
