If your iPhone battery is draining while the phone is locked, start with Settings > Battery to find what is using power. On a supported iPhone, turning off Always-On Display and choosing a shorter Auto-Lock interval can reduce screen-on time, but Apple does not publish a guaranteed battery-savings figure for either change.
One version caveat: Apple’s consumer instructions cited here cover iOS 26. Its WWDC26 developer session discusses iOS 27 Live Activities, but does not document a new consumer Lock Screen battery setting. If your iOS 27 labels differ, use the current settings shown on your iPhone.
Does Always-On Display drain battery?
On supported iPhone models, Always-On Display keeps a dimmed Lock Screen visible while the phone is locked. Disabling it gives you a dark screen instead, trading glanceable information for less time with the display active. Apple’s iOS 26 user guide does not quantify how much battery turning it off saves.

Turn off Always-On Display
- Open Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display.
- Turn off Always On Display.
The option is available only on supported models. Apple says Always-On Display turns off automatically in certain situations, including when the iPhone is face down or obstructed, Low Power Mode or Sleep Focus is on, and at the user’s usual bedtime. If the setting is missing, check your iPhone’s model and the current options in Settings. See Apple’s iOS 26 iPhone User Guide for the feature details.

Set Auto-Lock to avoid leaving the screen on
Auto-Lock turns off the display and locks the iPhone after a period without interaction. Apple specifically warns that delaying or preventing Auto-Lock may increase power consumption, and lists enabling Auto-Lock as a battery suggestion.
- Open Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock.
- Choose an interval that suits how you use your phone, rather than leaving the display on indefinitely.
A shorter interval can mean more frequent locking, so balance battery use with convenience. Apple does not give a specific savings estimate for changing the interval. The available choices can vary by device or configuration.

Find out what is actually using battery
A locked phone can still use power for activity beyond its display. Before changing more Lock Screen settings, review the iPhone’s battery report; it can show whether the drain coincides with app activity, weak cellular signal, or notifications that wake the device.

- Review any battery suggestions and Insights shown on the page.
- Check Daily Usage and App and System Activity Usage to see how consumption changes through the day and which kinds of activity are associated with it.
Apple’s Battery page lets you compare current daily usage with the prior seven days. This is a view of your own device, not a population benchmark or a prediction of how much a setting change will save. Apple explains the report and common contributors in its battery-drain troubleshooting guide.

If battery drain began after an iOS update
Give the iPhone a few days after updating before deciding that a Lock Screen change caused unusual drain. Apple says background tasks may continue after an update; the Battery page may show an Ongoing iOS Update insight. Recheck Settings > Battery after a few days and compare usage rather than judging from the first day alone.

Lock Screen settings are not a fix for a battery that needs service. Check the Battery Health information in Settings. If the iPhone displays Service, Apple advises considering service; the appropriate next step depends on the device and its condition. Apple’s drain guidance does not specify a replacement battery for every iPhone.

What iOS 27 changes—and what Apple has documented
The consumer instructions linked here describe iOS 26 settings and troubleshooting. Apple’s WWDC26 session, “Live Activities essentials,” is developer-facing material about Live Activities and their update mechanisms; it does not establish a new iOS 27 consumer setting for reducing Lock Screen battery use. Apple’s iOS 26 features page provides version context for iOS 26 Lock Screen features, not evidence of a battery optimization introduced in iOS 27.
So, for a locked iPhone on iOS 27, use the settings that are available on your device: disable Always-On Display if supported and unwanted, keep Auto-Lock enabled, and use Battery diagnostics to identify the actual source of persistent drain.
