Babbel offers Spanish learners expert-designed lessons and structured practice, but it is not a substitute for a live teacher. Its current speaking tools include speech recognition, scripted conversations, and Babbel Speak, an AI conversation partner in beta. The more human element is the course design and curated learning scenarios—not a person responding to you in real time.
What “more human” means in Babbel’s Spanish courses
Babbel says language-learning experts design its method and learning materials around practical language use. Lessons are about six minutes, and the app includes review of mistakes and pronunciation exercises. That is human expertise shaping a digital course; it is not one-to-one instruction. Babbel offers Spanish from Spain and Latin American Spanish, with courses reaching C1 where the language combination supports that level. You can try the first lesson in each course for free. See Babbel’s method overview for its description of the approach.
The distinction matters if you want a person to correct you, answer unexpected questions, or adapt a conversation as it unfolds. Babbel’s current consumer app can provide structure and practice, but the speaking feedback described in its product information comes from automated tools or scripted activities.

How Babbel’s Spanish speaking practice works
| Feature | How practice works | Availability and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Pronunciation exercises | Repeat a prompted word or phrase; speech recognition returns feedback based on how closely your pronunciation matches the target. | Availability depends on the exercise. Microphone permission is required; Babbel recommends a quiet environment and stable internet. Babbel’s speech-recognition guidance. |
| Guided Conversations | Listen to a scripted scenario and speak assigned parts. | Mobile only; Spanish from Mexico and Spain at A1/A2 levels. The dialogue is scripted, rather than an open-ended exchange. Babbel’s Guided Conversations details. |
| Babbel Speak | Have an AI-led conversation in a scenario. The feature can offer hints, translations, repetition, or slower responses, then feedback after the conversation. | Beta on mobile. Listed Spanish options depend on display language: British English display lists Spanish practice; American English display lists Mexican Spanish. Availability may change, so check inside the app. Babbel Speak help page. |
These are different kinds of practice, not interchangeable forms of human conversation. Speech recognition focuses on pronunciation, Guided Conversations give you a prepared role, and Babbel Speak uses AI to respond within a scenario. Even an AI conversation that feels fluid is not a live teacher who can bring their own experience or answer freely as a person would.

Babbel Speak is AI, not a human tutor
Babbel introduced Babbel Speak as an AI conversation partner on September 16, 2025. Its scenarios, hints, and personalized responses can help you rehearse practical exchanges, while the feature’s beta status and language availability mean the exact options may vary. Babbel Principal Product Manager Franz Ardito described the division of work as language experts defining how learners progress through scenarios while AI handles conversational flow and personalized responses. The product therefore combines human-designed pedagogy with AI interaction; the AI itself is not a teacher. See Babbel’s launch announcement.
Babbel Live is no longer bookable for individual learners
Babbel ended bookings for individual Babbel Live classes after June 30, 2025. Class history and materials remained accessible through August 31, 2025. That consumer closure is separate from Babbel’s business offering, and does not mean individual learners can currently book a live teacher through the consumer product. Check Babbel’s Live availability notice and its separate Babbel for Business page.

What Babbel’s Spanish-learning studies show—and what they do not
Babbel has published positive findings from studies of its Spanish courses. These results are tied to particular participants, measures, and study periods; they do not establish that every learner will achieve the same outcome, or that AI speaking practice caused the gains.

| Study as reported by Babbel | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Yale University Center for Language Study; 117 US beginners; three months | Babbel reports that 100% improved oral Spanish proficiency, with progress from beginner to intermediate levels. | A result for the participants in this study, not a personal forecast. |
| Michigan State University; 54 students | Babbel reports that after 10 hours, 96% scored higher on grammar and vocabulary tests and 73% improved oral proficiency. | The summary also reports an association between time using Babbel and gains; it does not show that AI alone produced them. |
| City University of New York; two months | Babbel reports an average of 15 hours of study to meet an outcome described as equivalent to one college semester of Spanish. | The equivalence is Babbel’s summary of this study’s outcome. |
| ACTFL novice-high oral proficiency, as reported in Yale and Michigan State summaries | Babbel reports average study times of 46 hours for Yale participants and 12 hours for Michigan State participants. | The studies had different contexts; the hours are not a head-to-head comparison or an individual prediction. |
Babbel’s January 10, 2019 announcement about the Michigan State collaboration said nearly all participants who completed the study made statistically significant gains in oral proficiency, grammar knowledge, and/or vocabulary after approximately 12 weeks. The release quoted lead investigator Dr. Shawn Loewen describing gains in oral proficiency measured with the Oral Proficiency Interview. Babbel’s summaries and announcement are company-hosted accounts; the findings should be attributed to those specific studies rather than treated as independent guarantees. More detail is available in Babbel’s research summaries and its Michigan State announcement.

When Babbel fits—and when to add a person
Babbel is a reasonable fit if you want a guided course, short lessons, review, and low-pressure speaking practice that you can do on your own. Before choosing, consider the kind of practice you need:
- For a course structure: Babbel’s expert-designed sequence and practical scenarios provide a path through lessons.
- For pronunciation repetition: Use speech-recognition exercises when offered, with microphone access and a quiet connection.
- For rehearsing prepared exchanges: Guided Conversations offer scripted mobile practice at the listed Spanish A1/A2 levels.
- For scenario-based back-and-forth: Babbel Speak adds AI responses and hints, but remains an AI feature in beta.
- For spontaneous dialogue or personal correction: Arrange practice with a Spanish-speaking person or teacher outside the app. A human can respond to an unanticipated question in a way a script cannot; this is a separate option, not a current Babbel consumer class.
If your goal is actual conversation, pair structured app study with real exchanges rather than expecting the app’s automated tools to provide the same interaction. Babbel can help you prepare; a person can help you practice the unpredictable parts of speaking.
