Choose stock footage for the project’s final delivery resolution and how it will be viewed—not simply by selecting the biggest number. HD is often sufficient for HD delivery; 4K can be worthwhile for 4K screens or when you need to reframe a shot in an HD edit. Treat 8K as a specific requirement to verify with the stock provider, not a routine default.
Which resolution should you use for stock footage?
Start with the finished video’s delivery specification, then consider screen size, viewing distance, and whether the edit needs room to crop or move within the frame. A broadcaster, client, social platform, or screening venue may set requirements that override general guidance.
Shutterstock describes HD as a versatile choice for television, film, digital ads, and social media, and recommends 4K for television, film, large displays, and projection. Those are the provider’s recommendations, not universal platform rules. Check the destination’s current delivery requirements and the dimensions of the particular clip before licensing it. What do HD and 4K mean in actual dimensions?
Resolution labels are not always enough to identify a clip’s frame size. Shutterstock lists HD as 1920×1080. It distinguishes UHD television 4K at 3840×2160 from digital-cinema 4K at 4096×2160. Its contributor requirements also accept multiple horizontal 4K dimensions and vertical formats, so “4K” does not guarantee identical dimensions or orientation across files.

Before choosing a clip, inspect its metadata or provider listing for width, height, and orientation. Shutterstock’s video technical requirements list accepted specifications, while its 4K explainer describes the UHD and digital-cinema distinction.
Is 4K stock footage worth it for an HD video?
It can be, when you need to crop, zoom, or pan within the shot and still export at 1920×1080. The extra source resolution provides room to adjust framing without reducing the output below HD. Shutterstock discusses this use of 4K footage in an HD project in its guide to licensing 4K video.

That flexibility is useful only if the edit needs it. If the framing is fixed and the final delivery is HD, a larger source may add handling and storage demands without serving the project. Higher-resolution footage takes more storage space, and the file’s codec affects compression, quality, and practicality. - Confirm delivery first. Find the project’s required resolution and any client, broadcaster, platform, or venue specifications before searching.
- Compare actual clip dimensions. Do not rely on an HD, 4K, or 8K label alone; confirm width, height, and orientation on the provider page.
- Decide whether reframing matters. Consider 4K for an HD edit if you expect to crop, zoom, or pan. Otherwise, weigh the benefit against storage and media-handling needs.
- Check visual consistency. Shutterstock advises matching stock footage’s resolution and quality as closely as practical to the project’s original footage. A deliberate mismatch can suit an effect, such as a simulated VHS recording or security-camera view. Its stock-video tips discuss matching footage to a project.
- Verify the current listing before licensing. Confirm available download sizes, licensing terms, and any cost on the specific clip page. Availability and options depend on the provider and clip.
What to know before choosing 8K
Do not treat 8K as a standard stock-footage tier with predictable dimensions, availability, or licensing options. The available provider guidance establishes useful HD and 4K definitions and recommendations, but not a comparable 8K stock standard or routine use case. If a project specifically requires an 8K source, inspect the individual clip’s metadata and confirm delivery dimensions and licensing or download options with the provider before committing.
