The U.S. trading week of October 5–9 is set to bring September services data, minutes from the Federal Reserve’s latest meeting, weekly jobless claims, and a consumer-sentiment reading. Those events give investors several economic and policy signals to watch, but the available calendar and seasonal data do not justify a confident call that stocks will rise this week.

Services activity
The two Monday purchasing-managers’ indexes focus on services, an important part of the U.S. economy. They are separate surveys, so investors may compare their readings rather than treating them as a single measurement. Their release times are close together, at 9:45 and 10:00 a.m. Eastern. Claims and consumer sentiment
Weekly claims are a short-horizon indicator, not a complete account of employment. The sentiment survey is a separate measure of household outlook, not a direct reading of spending or economic growth. Together they can add context, but neither alone establishes a broad trend. Jobs and inflation reports fall outside the week
The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ official schedule puts the September Employment Situation report on Friday, October 2, before this outlook week. September CPI is scheduled for October 14 and PPI for October 15, after it. That makes October 5–9 a week for other economic signals, not a scheduled BLS jobs or inflation release. Which earnings dates are worth watching?
Kiplinger’s calendar lists no noteworthy earnings reports for Monday and includes Lamb Weston and Constellation Brands later in the week. Treat these as a watchlist, not a confirmed schedule: Kiplinger says dates are tentative unless a company has officially announced them. Does October’s seasonal reputation point to strength?
Historical averages offer context, not a forecast for the coming week. The Stock Trader’s Almanac 2024, using historical index data through 2023, reports positive average October changes across its full-sample tables for the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500, and Nasdaq. The same source’s October figures for presidential-election years are negative averages: −1.0% for the Dow, −0.9% for the S&P 500, and −2.2% for the Nasdaq. The difference shows why a broad seasonal pattern should not be presented as a guarantee of strength in a particular election-year October—much less a prediction for one trading week.
