The latest completed session before this update was Thursday, 8 October 2026. The Nifty 50 closed at 22,231.80, down 371.25 points (1.64%), and the Sensex closed at 71,593.24, down 1,045 points (1.44%). These are closing figures for 8 October, not live quotes. At 05:41 IST on 9 October the session had not yet opened, and the official NSE live-equity page had not yet shown populated values, so this article does not publish live levels for 9 October.
Latest completed session: Thursday, 8 October 2026
| Benchmark | Close, 8 October 2026 | Change on the day | Reported by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nifty 50 (NSE) | 22,231.80 | Down 371.25 points (1.64%) | ET Now |
| Sensex (BSE) | 71,593.24 | Down 1,045 points (1.44%) | ET Now |
Both benchmarks fell by similar percentages that day. Point moves, however, cannot be compared across the two indices, as explained below.
What the reports linked to the decline
Two developments were reported alongside the session. Each is presented here as context from the cited report, not as an established cause.
- Oil prices: NDTV reported that Brent crude rose 3.9% to an intraday high of $104.09 per barrel, amid Middle East supply concerns. The figure is an intraday high, not a closing price.
- Monetary policy: NDTV also reported that the Reserve Bank of India had shifted its policy stance from neutral to calibrated tightening the previous day, 7 October 2026.
Neither report establishes that either factor alone drove the fall in equities. Treat them as the news that accompanied the session rather than a verified explanation of it.

Sensex and Nifty: what separates the two benchmarks
Readers often see the Sensex and the Nifty quoted side by side, but they are separate indices with different constituents and different publishers.
| Attribute | S&P BSE Sensex | NSE Nifty 50 |
|---|---|---|
| Exchange or provider | BSE | NSE |
| Constituent description (per SEBI) | 30 large, well-known companies from different sectors | 50 of the largest and most frequently traded companies listed on NSE |
| Close, 8 October 2026 | 71,593.24 | 22,231.80 |
| Move, 8 October 2026 | Down 1,045 points (1.44%) | Down 371.25 points (1.64%) |
| Observation time | Closing value for 8 October 2026 | Closing value for 8 October 2026 |
A higher point level does not mean an index is stronger. Compare the percentage move over the same session window, and treat the two point levels as separate measurements.

How to read a market update: live versus close
Most confusion about “today” market figures comes from mixing live values with the previous close. A clear update should:
Recommended Free Tools
- State the date, the time, the timezone (IST), and whether the market is pre-open, trading, or closed.
- Use the word “live” only when the value carries an observation time.
- Label the prior session’s figures as a close, with the trading date.
- Report percentage change as the comparable measure across indices.
- Add breadth (advances, declines, unchanged) and sector moves only when they come from dated exchange data or a reliable dated report.
Checking live NSE values yourself
For live equity fields, the official NSE live-equity page is the primary reference. Use it as follows:
- Open the live equity market page on the official NSE website.
- Note the timestamp and check whether the market is pre-open, open, or closed.
- Read the fields the page provides: open, high, low, previous close, last traded price (LTP), change, percentage change, volume, value, and 52-week range.
- Check that the change equals LTP minus previous close, and that the percentage change is that difference divided by previous close.
- If the table shows a loading placeholder or blank values, do not quote a live figure. Use the most recent official close and label it with its date.
Reading index moves without overreacting
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), in its Market Index investor-education page on the Sensex and Nifty, states: “It is important to note that securities market indices are not a guarantee of future performance.” SEBI also notes that index values can fluctuate substantially in a short period, and advises research or consultation with securities-market professionals before making investment decisions.
Daily market recaps describe what happened in an index. They are not buy or sell instructions. NSE cautions investors against unsolicited stock tips and fake social-media trading schemes. SEBI’s investor site lists fake trading-app, stock-guru, and pump-and-dump scams among the frauds it warns about.

For official verification, use the NSE live-equity page for NSE data and SEBI’s investor-education material for background on indices and fraud warning signs.

The figures in this article are fixed to the 8 October 2026 close. Any 9 October level should be checked against the official exchange pages at the moment you read it, and it should be presented with its own timestamp.
