Stirling-PDF is a configurable toolbox for PDF tasks such as merging, editing, signing, conversion, OCR and redaction. You can use its desktop application or run it as a self-hosted server; Docker is the official quick-start route for server deployments, but it is not the only installation option. Which tools are available—and where a file is processed—depends on the deployment, installed dependencies and any cloud or remote-server connection.
What Stirling-PDF does
Stirling-PDF brings a range of PDF operations into one platform, including signing, conversion, merging, editing, OCR and redaction. Its official overview also describes API and automation capabilities. The available tool list can change, so consult the official Stirling-PDF overview for current capabilities rather than relying on a fixed feature count.
Choose where Stirling-PDF runs
| Option | Where processing happens | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desktop app | On the local computer for supported operations in local-only mode. | Someone who wants a desktop interface without administering a server. | Available tools depend on desktop dependencies; some operations may need a connected server. |
| Self-hosted server | On the user’s Stirling-PDF instance, subject to its configuration. | A household, team or individual who wants a server-based toolbox and can manage access and updates. | Choose an image and configure access, network exposure, persistence and any needed dependencies. |
| Stirling Cloud or another remote server | Relevant operations are routed to the connected service when the app uses it. | Someone who wants to use a connected service rather than rely exclusively on local processing. | Understand which operations use the remote service and its applicable privacy and account terms. |
These choices are about both administration and file routing. A desktop app is not automatically capable of every server-side operation, and installing the server yourself does not by itself secure it.
Check feature availability before choosing an image
Stirling-PDF has multiple Docker image variants, and desktop features depend on installed dependencies. OCR and Office document conversions are examples of capabilities that may require additional dependencies or a connected server in the documented setup. Before deploying, compare the image or desktop setup against the current version matrix for the specific operation you need.
#1 Best Overall
- Scanner type: Document
- Connectivity technology: USB
- With Auto Scan Mode, the scanner automatically detects what you're scanning
- Digitize documents and images
Do not infer that two installations have identical tools simply because both are called Stirling-PDF. If a required feature is missing, the cause may be the selected image, absent dependencies or lack of a server connection.
Install the server with Docker
The official installation overview recommends Docker for server deployments and documents a quick-start container command. Treat it as a starting point, then follow the guide for the image, persistent storage and settings appropriate to your deployment; a short command alone is not a complete production setup.

- Review the official installation guide and select the image variant that supports your intended tools.
- Prepare the Docker host and follow the guide’s documented command and persistence instructions. The reviewed documentation does not establish minimum CPU, memory, storage or performance requirements, so do not assume a particular machine is sufficient for every workload.
- After startup, configure the instance for its users and environment before exposing it beyond a trusted network.
- Verify a representative operation—especially OCR or Office conversion if needed—and confirm the tool is available in your chosen image or dependency setup.
Docker is a reasonable route if you already have a suitable host, but it is not mandatory for everyone. Official materials also list desktop applications and manual server setup. A dedicated mini PC is an optional way to provide a Docker host, not a documented requirement or a device Stirling-PDF specifies.

Configure the instance and limit folder access
The configuration guide documents three ways to set server options: the in-app settings, environment variables and settings.yml. Use the in-app controls when managing a running instance through its interface; environment variables or the settings file may fit better when deployment configuration is maintained as infrastructure. Consult the configuration guide for the relevant settings and syntax.

- OPTIMIZE IMAGES AND TEXT – Automatic color detection/adjustment, image rotation (PC only), bleed through prevention/background removal, text enhancement, color drop to enhance scans. Software suite includes document management and OCR software. (4)
If users will use Processor folder sources, configure permitted directories deliberately. The Processor setup guide says the allowed-folder list is empty by default and that signed-in users can configure processing folders within permitted directories. Allow only directories appropriate for every user who can use the feature; folder permissions are an access boundary, not a convenience setting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand desktop privacy and file routing
In the desktop app’s local-only mode, supported operations are processed locally. If an operation needs a server-side capability that is unavailable, the app blocks it and prompts the user rather than silently uploading the file. If you connect Stirling Cloud or a remote self-hosted server, relevant operations may instead be routed to that service. See the official FAQ for the routing description.

Self-hosting means processing can take place on your instance, but privacy still depends on how that server is configured and reached. Consider who can access it, whether it is exposed to the internet, what authentication and network controls are in place, and how its settings and permitted folders are managed. Installation is not a substitute for those operational decisions.

- Choose a self-hosted server if you want a shared or centrally managed instance and are prepared to administer the host, configuration and user access.
- Choose a connected cloud or remote server only when you are comfortable routing relevant operations to that service under its terms.
- Before committing, verify your must-have tools against the version matrix, especially for OCR and Office conversions, and determine which machine or service will process the files.
