A physically unclonable function (PUF) can act as a physical fingerprint for a circuit board. In the foil-based concept reported in 2015, patterned electrodes in adhesive-backed polymer film are wrapped around or attached to a board, then read by software on its controller. Damage or removal is intended to change the measured response and reveal interference. The concept has since appeared in Fraunhofer demonstrator work, but the available sources do not establish that this specific foil is a retail product.
What does “stick a PUF to your board” mean?
PUF stands for physically unclonable function. In this design, the PUF is not a sticker that identifies a board by printing a serial number. It is a physical structure whose measured electrical response serves as a fingerprint. Patterned metal electrodes are embedded in a polymer film with a self-adhesive backing; the film is placed around or onto the protected board, and the board’s controller reads its response.
The goal is to bind a physical integrity check to the hardware. If someone removes, scratches, pinches, or unseals the film, its physical properties may change enough to alter the reading. The system can compare that reading with an expected value and treat a mismatch as evidence of interference. This is the design’s intended detection mechanism, not a guarantee that every kind of attack will be detected.
How can the foil detect tampering?
- Attach the foil: Patterned electrodes in the adhesive-backed film cover or wrap the part of the board or system that needs protection.
- Read its physical response: A measurement circuit and software on the protected board controller obtain the PUF response.
- Check for a change: The system evaluates whether the response is consistent with the expected physical fingerprint. Damage or disturbance to the foil is intended to change that response.
- Apply a chosen response: The design may alert an operator, disable the system during operation, or wipe embedded software. These are possible responses described in the 2015 report, not built-in or universal PUF behaviors.
The PUF provides a signal about the foil’s condition; it does not decide what the product should do with that signal. That decision belongs to the security architecture around it, including how a mismatch is handled and what recovery is permitted.

How the foil approach differs from a chip-level PUF
The distinction is mainly about physical coverage and integration. A silicon-based PUF is associated with a chip; the foil concept aims to protect a larger board or system with one physical layer. In 2015, project researcher Sven Plaga described the foil as potentially cheaper and simpler to implement than silicon-based PUFs. That was a researcher’s statement about the project, not a verified cost comparison or a current product claim.
| Consideration | Foil-based approach | What the available sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| Protection scope | Intended to cover a board or system rather than only one chip. | The 2015 report describes this intended advantage; it does not provide validated coverage measurements. |
| Physical integration | Adhesive-backed electrode film is attached or wrapped around the protected hardware. | The sources describe the concept and a later wrapped-foil demonstrator. |
| Readout | Software on the board controller reads the foil’s response; a measurement circuit is described in the later demonstrator. | No general controller compatibility or implementation specification is provided. |
| Stability | The physical response must remain usable despite changes over time and temperature. | The 2015 report identifies this as a development challenge; it gives no validated performance figures. |
| After a mismatch | The system can be designed to alert, disable, or wipe software. | These are examples, not a default response or guarantee for all implementations. |
What makes a foil PUF difficult to engineer?
The film must be sensitive enough that tampering changes its fingerprint, yet stable enough that ordinary environmental or material changes do not look like an attack. In the 2015 report, Plaga said the team was exploring electrode patterns of different shapes and complexities and correction algorithms to support stability as the film might shrink or expand over time or with temperature.

This is a central trade-off: greater complexity may help distinguish a physical fingerprint, while changing dimensions or conditions may make repeated readings drift. A correction method must address that variation without making deliberate tampering indistinguishable from normal change. The cited reports do not give a quantified error rate, temperature range, service life, or independent validation result for the foil.
Is the PUF foil available to buy?
The available evidence supports research and demonstrator activity, not ordinary retail availability of this specific foil. EE Times reported the concept as under development in 2015 and relayed a forecast that commercialization might follow within two to three years. That was a prediction at the time, not confirmation that a commercial product launched.

Fraunhofer AISEC’s Hardware Security overview says PUF research continues and describes work with technology partners on PUF-based tamper protection that assesses device integrity from a physical hardware fingerprint. A 2025 Fraunhofer publication, “PUF-Based Tamper Protection for Global Satellite Navigation,” describes wrapped foil and a measurement circuit in a demonstrator for a GNSS payload scenario, and discusses applicability to future use cases. A demonstrator is evidence of technical work, not proof of a generally available product.
Consequently, a generic security label or PCB accessory should not be treated as equivalent to the described PUF foil. The source material does not establish a matching retail listing, compatible kit, replacement foil, or consumer application tool.
