Jaylen Warren is listed first among the Pittsburgh Steelers’ running backs on the team’s depth chart dated October 3, 2026. His recent production supports that lead role: in 2025, he rushed for 958 yards and six touchdowns, added 333 receiving yards, and finished with 1,291 scrimmage yards. The listing establishes his place in the published order—not a guaranteed share of carries or an exclusive backfield.
Is Jaylen Warren the Steelers’ lead running back?
Yes, by the Steelers’ listed depth-chart order as of October 3, 2026. Warren appears first, followed by Rico Dowdle, Eli Heidenreich, and Travis Homer. A depth chart indicates the team’s published ordering; it does not by itself establish who will receive the most touches in a particular game.
How productive was Warren in 2025?
Warren played 16 games and combined substantial rushing work with a receiving contribution. Pittsburgh described 2025 as a career year, with career highs in rushing yards, attempts, and rushing touchdowns.
| Season or context | Rushing | Receiving | What the figures show |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 regular season | 211 carries, 958 yards, 4.5 yards per carry, 6 touchdowns | 40 catches, 333 yards, 8.3 yards per catch, 2 touchdowns | 1,291 scrimmage yards, according to Pittsburgh’s season review |
| 2023 regular season | 149 carries, 784 yards, 4 touchdowns | 61 catches, 370 yards | Warren and Najee Harris each exceeded 1,000 scrimmage yards, according to Warren’s Steelers biography |
| 2026 early-season snapshot | 55 carries, 309 yards, 5.6 yards per carry | 13 catches, 143 yards | NFL.com’s table lists four games; this is an early-season total, not a full-season pace or forecast |
How much does Warren contribute as a receiver?
Warren is more than a rushing option. His 40 receptions for 333 yards and two receiving touchdowns in 2025 added a meaningful second source of production to his 958 rushing yards. The 2023 figures also show a season with more catches than in 2025: 61 receptions for 370 yards.

That versatility was visible in a 65-yard catch-and-run against Seattle. Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers called it “One of the greatest catch-and-runs I’ve seen,” in the team’s February 4, 2026 review of the season.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will Warren split carries with Rico Dowdle?
The available evidence does not establish a 2026 carry split. Warren is first on the current Steelers depth chart, while Pittsburgh’s review of the 2025 season described Kenneth Gainwell as complementing Warren. That review credited Gainwell with 537 rushing yards and team-leading totals of 85 targets and 73 receptions. The current chart instead lists Dowdle second, but the order alone does not reveal how Pittsburgh will divide carries, receiving work, or snaps between them.

For that reason, Warren’s listed lead role should not be read as a promise of a particular weekly workload. The published material cited here does not establish his precise 2026 snap or touch share, or a projected rest-of-season workload.
