In one direct laundry study, steam-water left slightly less house-dust-mite allergen than a 60°C (140°F) wash—but that small, protocol-specific difference does not establish that a washer’s steam cycle is generally better. Both modes killed all house dust mites in that experiment. For pollen, the wash-mode differences disappeared after one rinse. Detergent, wash action, rinsing, the allergen being measured, and the washer’s actual cycle all matter.
What the direct comparison found
Choi and coauthors compared detergent-assisted washing at 30°C, 40°C, and 60°C with a steam-water mode using contaminated sheets. They measured residual Der f 1, a house-dust-mite allergen. The reported percentages are the share remaining after each study mode, not the share removed:
| Study wash mode | Der f 1 remaining on contaminated sheets | House-dust-mite mortality |
|---|---|---|
| 30°C | 26.8% | 6.5% |
| 40°C | 2.4% | 9.6% |
| 60°C | 1.3% | 100% (all mites killed) |
| Steam-water | 0.6% | 100% (all mites killed) |
The steam-water mode left 0.7 percentage points less Der f 1 than the 60°C mode in that protocol. The study does not show whether that difference is meaningful in ordinary household use, or whether a consumer washer’s steam cycle reproduces the study conditions. These figures describe one study’s outcomes; they are not performance guarantees for every machine or load. Choi et al., Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (2008).
Allergen left behind is not the same as live mites
Heat can kill mites without removing all allergen they have left in fabric. Conversely, washing can rinse allergen away without proving that every live mite has been killed. Choi et al. measured both outcomes, which is why the mortality results should not be treated as a substitute for the residual-allergen results.

Pollen results depended on rinsing
Before the rinse comparison, the 60°C and steam modes had lower remaining pollen allergen than the lower-temperature modes. After one rinse, pollen allergen levels did not differ among the wash modes. The authors concluded that water temperature and the number of rinses are critical factors in removing house-dust-mite, dog-dander, and pollen allergens. The result is a reason not to assume that a steam label alone determines performance.
Why detergent and rinsing matter alongside temperature
Other studies support the importance of ordinary washing mechanics, but they used different methods and should not be combined numerically with the direct comparison.

- DEEP CLEAN FOR SENSITIVE SKIN: Removes more stains than the leading Free detergent while remaining gentle on skin
- FREE OF DYES AND PERFUMES: Formulated without dyes and perfumes to help reduce the risk of irritation
- CERTIFIED BY EXPERTS: Recognized by the NEA, EPA Safer Choice, and NPF for its sensitive skin formula
- WORKS IN ANY MACHINE: Effective in both high efficiency and standard washing machines
- CLEANS IN COLD WATER: Designed to deliver cleaning performance even in cold wash cycles
- Detergent extraction: In a simulated-laundry study, detergent solution extracted more cat and dust-mite allergen than water or soap alone. Almost all measured extraction occurred within five minutes at 25°C, and the commercial detergents tested performed similarly. This was a simulated extraction experiment, not a comparison of consumer steam cycles. Tovey et al., Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (2001).
- Machine washing: A separate study reported 84% Der f 1 removal with water or detergent and 98% with detergent plus bleach. Live mites also transferred from infested items to initially mite-free items, and repeated washing was needed to further reduce mite levels. Its protocol differs from Choi et al.’s, so these removal figures are not directly comparable with the residual percentages above. Arlian et al., Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (2003).
Neither study establishes that a particular detergent brand, additive, or machine cycle is best for every fabric and allergen. Do not add bleach unless the garment care label and product instructions allow it.
What to do with bedding at home
- Check the care label first. Use only a water temperature and cycle the bedding can tolerate. A study result at 60°C does not make that temperature safe for every fabric.
- Use detergent and a thorough rinse. The cited extraction study found detergent useful even at 25°C, while the direct comparison found that rinse count affected allergen results. Follow the detergent and washer instructions rather than assuming a steam setting replaces either.
- Choose a cycle based on its actual settings, not its name. “Steam” is not a standardized description of the treatment in every consumer washer. The direct study tested a steam-water mode; it did not verify current washer models or their implementation.
- Wash bedding regularly. AAAAI’s 2013 dust-mite practice parameter describes weekly warm-water washing of bedding as a reasonable exposure-reduction measure. It is general guidance, not evidence that steam outperforms hot water. AAAAI, Environmental assessment and exposure control of dust mites: a practice parameter (2013).
- Avoid unsafe hot-water handling. The AAAAI document notes the scald risk from hot household water. Do not raise a home water-heater setting solely to treat laundry; follow safe household-water guidance.
Which should you choose?
If the bedding can tolerate it and your priority is the options directly compared in the study, 60°C washing and the tested steam-water mode both killed all mites; steam-water left slightly less Der f 1 in that experiment. That is not enough evidence to recommend every washer’s steam setting over a hot-water cycle. For pollen, one rinse erased the differences between modes in the direct study. A suitable detergent, effective wash action, and rinsing are practical factors across temperatures.

- With trusted ARM & HAMMER Baking Soda, this HE detergent is formulated to deeply clean clothes while being gentle on skin
- HE laundry detergent is concentrated with 2X powerful stain fighters in every load versus leading value detergent, making it an effective and efficient laundry detergent
The evidence concerns measured allergen residue and mite mortality, not whether a particular cycle improves allergy symptoms. Choose a fabric-safe cycle, use detergent, and do not infer a health benefit from a cycle label alone.
