Neither Steam nor Battle.net is universally better for installing and managing Call of Duty on PC. Choose Steam if you prefer its library and features; choose Battle.net if you already use Blizzard’s desktop app and its social tools. Your Activision account can carry progress across linked platforms in games that support cross-progression, but that does not establish that a purchase on one storefront gives you access on the other.
What differs between Steam and Battle.net?
The choice is primarily about storefront, library organization, and the launcher you prefer—not a documented performance advantage. Steam’s Call of Duty listing identifies Steam achievements and an Activision account requirement. Blizzard describes its Battle.net desktop app as a place to launch games, follow news and updates, and message friends.

Official materials cited here do not establish that either launcher delivers higher frame rates, faster downloads, more reliable service, or more consistent patches. Without current controlled testing or official comparisons, those are not sound reasons to pick one.
How does Call of Duty library organization compare?
Library behavior can depend on the specific title. Steam Support documented a change that moved Modern Warfare II and Modern Warfare III out of the shared Call of Duty HQ library entry and into separate game entries. For those affected titles, the change required reinstalling them; saves, progression, and achievements transferred automatically. This example applies to those titles and does not establish how every Call of Duty game is organized.
#1 Best Overall
- INTRODUCING A NEW ERA OF BLACK OPS: Call of Duty: Black Ops III takes place in a dark, gritty future where a new breed of Black Ops soldier emerges and the lines are blurred between our own humanity and the cutting-edge military robotics that define the future of combat.
- A CALL OF DUTY CAMPAIGN UNLIKE ANYTHING BEFORE IT: Treyarch elevates the Call of Duty social gaming experience by delivering up to four player campaign co-op, using the same battle-tested network infrastructure and social systems that support its world-class Multiplayer and Zombies game modes.
- PREPARE FOR A LEVELED-UP MULTIPLAYER: With Black Ops III, Treyarch premieres a new momentum-based chained-movement system, allowing players to fluidly move through the environment with finesse, using controlled thrust jumps, slides, and mantling abilities in a multitude of combinations, all while maintaining complete control over your weapon at all times.
- FIGHT THE UNDEAD IN AN ALL-NEW HORROR STORY: No Treyarch title would be complete without its signature Zombies offering - a full-game experience with its own distinct storyline right out of the box. Black Ops III Zombies is the most immersive and ambitious Call of Duty Zombies to date, with a full XP-based progression system for players that adds depth and re-playability to the engaging gameplay Zombies fans have come to expect.
Before choosing or changing launchers, check how the particular game appears in the storefront library and what its current installation instructions say. A launcher change should not be assumed to preserve an existing installation automatically.
Does Call of Duty progress transfer between Steam and Battle.net?
Activision says that progression in cross-progression-enabled games is stored on the Activision account rather than the platform account. Its account guidance says: “Because game progression in crossplay-enabled games is stored on your Activision account, you can play on any platform you have linked to your account, and your progression carries over.” Steam and Blizzard accounts can be linked to an Activision account.
Rank #2
- Play as part of a well-trained squad in this first-person, action game
- Delivers the gritty realism and cinematic intensity of WW II's epic battlefield
- Experienced through the eyes of citizen soldiers and unsung heroes
- Authentic squad movements and tactics
- Each soldier's distinct personality and training comes out on the battlefield
Use the same Activision account on both platforms. Linking a different Activision account will not carry the progress associated with the first account. The transfer applies to progression in games that support cross-progression; it should not be read as a guarantee that every title or every type of content transfers.
Does buying Call of Duty on one storefront grant access on the other?
Progression and ownership are separate. Activision’s account-linking guidance addresses progress, not cross-store purchase entitlements. Before switching storefronts, verify that you own the specific game on the platform where you plan to install it, and check which editions or included content that listing covers. Do not assume that buying a game on Steam grants access to it on Battle.net, or the reverse.

How much storage does a Call of Duty installation need?
Steam’s Call of Duty listing specifies an SSD and 161 GB of available space at launch. That is a listing-specific launch requirement, not a current installation-size guarantee for every Call of Duty title. Check the latest requirements for the particular game and leave additional room for updates.
