Use Steam’s Most Played list to find games with high visible player activity when you check. Use Top Sellers to see which games are generating the most revenue recently—not which sold the most copies.
What Steam’s two lists measure
Most Played: visible activity
Steam’s charts page labels this list “MOST PLAYED” and displays an “IN GAME” count beside its top entry. It is the better starting point if you want a quick snapshot of games with many players visibly active. The public chart does not fully describe its technical counting and sampling rules, so treat it as an activity signal—not a precise count of unique players, daily users, or long-term popularity.

Top Sellers: revenue, not units
Steam labels its global Top Sellers chart as the top-selling games “by revenue.” Valve’s Steamworks documentation says the ranking includes revenue from base-game purchases, downloadable content (DLC), and in-game transactions. For the live chart, Steam rolls up player spending over the trailing 24 hours and gives extra weight to spending in the last 3 hours.

A game can rank highly because of costly editions or spending on add-ons, even if its visible player count is lower than another game’s. Free-to-play games can appear too: their base game may cost nothing, while DLC or in-game purchases contribute revenue.

Which list should you use?

Check the timeframe, region, and filters
Steam’s charts page offers live charts as well as weekly charts, monthly top releases, and year-end summaries. Those views cover different periods: do not compare a live snapshot with a weekly list as if they were measuring the same timeframe. Steamworks describes the trailing-24-hour calculation and extra weighting for the last 3 hours specifically for the real-time Top Sellers chart; do not assume that method applies to every chart or timeframe.
What you see can also depend on storefront settings. Steamworks says the default storefront is territory-specific and that charts are available for some popular countries; users can switch to a global or another country’s view. Store preferences can filter out categories, games you already own, and free-to-play games, so two people may not see identical lists.

Use a chart as a starting point, not a verdict
Neither chart is a quality rating or a personal recommendation. After finding a candidate, open its Steam page and check its reviews, tags, system requirements, and details about its play style. Those details are more useful for deciding whether it fits your interests and setup than a rank alone.
