Buy directly from Steam if you want Steam to handle the purchase and to use Steam’s refund process. Consider a third-party store when its sourcing is credible and the exact game, edition, activation platform, region, and seller terms match what you want. A lower price alone is not enough: for an outside purchase, Steam cannot refund the transaction.
Steam or a third-party store: what changes?
A Steam purchase is made through Steam. A third-party listing may provide a Steam key, but it may instead grant access through another launcher or storefront. Check the activation platform rather than assuming every PC game listing adds the game to your Steam library.

Buying a Steam key elsewhere is not automatically a sign that it is unauthorized. Valve’s Steamworks documentation on Steam Keys says developers can request keys to sell games through other stores and at retail. The important question is whether the seller has a credible basis for its keys and what recourse it offers if something goes wrong.
Compare the same purchase, not just the discount

When a third-party store is worth considering
It can be a reasonable choice when the listing clearly identifies the product and platform, your region is eligible, the final price is better, and you are comfortable relying on that store’s support and refund terms. Being listed is a useful screening signal, not a guarantee about every offer or a substitute for reading its terms.
What can go wrong with an outside key?
- Invalid or revoked key: Valve says publishers can revoke keys, including when a publisher determines a key was obtained fraudulently. For a key bought outside Steam, contact the retailer about a remedy; Steam cannot refund that outside purchase. See Valve’s guidance on revoked CD keys.
- Region mismatch: Keys and gifts can have regional restrictions. Confirm the activation countries before paying and take retailer-purchase issues to the retailer. See Steam Support’s region-restriction guidance.
- Wrong platform or edition: A listing can be for a different launcher or edition than you intended. Check the product details before checkout.
Does Steam refund the difference if a game goes on sale?
No. Steam says it does not refund the difference when a game becomes cheaper after purchase. If the original purchase qualifies under the refund policy, you can request a refund and buy it again at the current sale price. A quick decision checklist
- Match the game, edition, and included content.
- Confirm the activation platform; do not assume an outside PC listing is a Steam version.
- Check that the key can be activated in your country.
- Compare the final price for the same entitlement, including taxes and fees.
- Read the seller’s refund and support terms, and consider whether its sourcing is credible.
- Choose Steam if you prefer its direct purchase and refund route; choose an outside store only if the matched offer and its terms make sense for you.
