To find Soulslike demos during Steam Next Fest, open the live event page, browse its categories and game tags, and search for relevant subgenres or features. Before you invest time in a game, check its store listing for a released demo and use its demo install control. Next Fest’s lineup changes each edition; Steam’s October 2026 event is scheduled for October 19–26.
When is Steam Next Fest?
Steam Next Fest is a weeklong event focused on upcoming games with playable demos. It is intended to help players discover future releases while giving developers a way to reach potential fans and gather feedback. Steam describes trying the demos as free.
The October 2026 edition is scheduled to run from October 19 at 10:00 AM PDT (UTC−7) to October 26 at 10:00 AM PDT (UTC−7), according to Steam’s event page. Dates and page layout vary by edition, so check the live page for the event currently underway rather than relying on an old list.

- Open the live Steam Next Fest page. Use the current event page while the festival is running, and confirm the dates shown there.
- Browse categories and tags. Start with the genres and primary tags that fit your interests. Steam recommends browsing by category or a game’s primary tags, and searching subgenres or specific features where available. See Steam’s player-facing Next Fest announcement.
- Try more than one search phrase. Search for “Soulslike” and related subgenres or mechanics you care about. Event discovery uses categories and Steam Tags, so tags may not match every player’s personal definition of a Soulslike.
- Check each game’s store listing. Review its description, tags, screenshots, and trailer, then confirm that a demo is available and use the listing’s demo install control. A game’s appearance as an upcoming title is not a reason to assume its demo is currently playable.
- Wishlist games you want to follow. A wishlist helps you keep track of a title, but it is not a purchase and does not guarantee that its demo will remain available.
Steam’s event documentation says a game must have a released demo to be eligible for Next Fest. That eligibility rule is useful, but checking the individual store page is still the practical way to confirm what you can install. See Steamworks’ Next Fest documentation.

How should I judge a demo before buying?
A short demo cannot answer every question about a full game. Use the time to assess the parts that are visible in the sample, and compare each title against the same criteria rather than treating a festival listing as a recommendation.
- Combat feel and readability: Are attacks, enemy tells, dodges, blocks, and hit feedback understandable to you?
- Stamina or other resource management: Does managing limited actions or resources make combat more satisfying, or more frustrating?
- Difficulty and recovery: Do the challenge and consequences of failure suit you? If the demo includes checkpoints, notice how the recovery loop feels.
- Exploration and level structure: Do you enjoy finding routes, secrets, and points of progress in the portion available?
- Performance and controls: Does the game run and respond acceptably on your own setup, with inputs that feel comfortable?
- How representative the sample is: Does the demo give you enough of the core loop to form a useful impression, or does it end before you can tell?
These are evaluation prompts, not performance claims about any particular game. A demo may not include enough content to answer every point.

What if Next Fest has ended?
Check the game’s Steam store page to see whether its demo is still available. Developers may leave demos playable after the event, but continued access is not guaranteed. Steam also publishes a post-event Wrap-Up featuring games with the most-played demos; it can help you discover popular event demos, but it is not a complete list of Soulslike recommendations.
