Use the native Steam distribution package by default. On Ubuntu, Valve directs users to its official Steam .deb, and Valve’s SteamVR support guidance says the native distribution package should be used. Choose Flatpak when sandboxing, an immutable operating system, or a consistent cross-distribution runtime matters more than unrestricted host integration. Treat Snap as a last resort: Valve does not officially support it and documents runtime and library-path problems.
The package format does not repair a defective graphics stack. Before blaming Steam, make sure your Linux system can run a 32-bit OpenGL program and that its graphics drivers are current. For SteamVR, package choice is decisive: Valve says unsupported Snap and Flatpak packages break DRM leasing and asynchronous reprojection, so SteamVR should be installed through the native package.
Quick verdict
All three formats can put a Steam client on a Linux desktop, but they do not offer the same level of support or access to the host system.

What changes when you choose a package format?
The Steam client, Proton compatibility tools, game files, graphics drivers, and Linux kernel still do the actual work. The package format determines how that client is integrated with your operating system. In practice, five questions matter:

- Is the package on Valve’s supported path?
- Can Steam reach the drives, controllers, displays, and graphics interfaces your games need?
- Can Steam’s own container runtimes start correctly?
- Will a special workload such as SteamVR receive the low-level access it requires?
- How much permission management and troubleshooting are you willing to do?
There is no authoritative, current benchmark showing that one of these formats delivers universally higher frame rates. The evidence supports a decision about support, integration, sandbox access, and workload compatibility rather than a blanket performance claim.
Native Steam package: the default choice
Why Valve’s path matters
Valve’s Ubuntu guidance points users to the official Steam .deb. Its SteamVR support page is even more direct: “The native distribution package should be used instead.” That makes the native package the least ambiguous starting point when you want the installation route Valve documents.
Native installation also avoids an extra application sandbox between Steam and the operating system. Steam can access the host filesystem, graphics stack, input devices, and external game-library locations directly, subject to the normal permissions on your Linux account and drives. That direct path is useful when a library is stored on another mounted disk, when a controller or headset needs host-level access, or when you want the fewest additional permission rules.

“Native” does not mean identical on every distribution. Distribution packages can differ in age and in how they integrate dependencies. Keep the host operating system and graphics drivers current, and use the package format intended for your distribution. On Ubuntu, that means following Valve’s official .deb guidance rather than substituting an unsupported containerized package simply because it is convenient.
A native package also does not insulate Steam from a broken graphics installation. Valve’s troubleshooting guidance identifies missing or broken OpenGL drivers as a common cause of Linux startup failures and recommends verifying that a 32-bit OpenGL program runs correctly. If that test fails, changing from one package format to another is unlikely to solve the underlying problem.

Choose native when
- You want Valve’s documented installation and support path.
- You use SteamVR or plan to connect a PC headset.
- Your games or tools live on external or separately mounted library drives.
- You need direct access to controllers, graphics interfaces, and other host devices.
- You prefer fewer sandbox permissions to diagnose.
Flatpak: useful isolation with extra integration work
What Flatpak gives you
The Steam app on Flathub is packaged by the community and is not officially supported by Valve. Flatpak can nevertheless be a sensible choice when application isolation is a priority, when you run an immutable Linux distribution, or when you want a more consistent application runtime across different distributions.
That consistency comes from running the application inside a sandboxed environment rather than relying entirely on the host’s package and dependency set. The trade-off is that every host resource Steam needs must be reachable through the sandbox’s permissions. A second game drive, a controller, or another device may require an explicit permission grant before Steam can see it.

Requirements for Steam container runtimes
Valve documents a specific prerequisite for using Steam container runtimes from inside Flatpak: the operating system must permit unprivileged user namespaces, and Flatpak must be version 1.12 or later. If either condition is absent, a game or runtime that depends on those containers can fail even though the Steam client itself launches.
This requirement is separate from game compatibility. Proton may support a title, yet the Flatpak environment can still prevent the required runtime from starting. Check the operating system policy and Flatpak version before spending time changing game settings.
Permissions you may need to manage
Flatpak’s isolation is helpful only if the resources you need are exposed to the app. Typical symptoms of a permission problem include a library drive that does not appear in Steam, a controller that works elsewhere but is invisible to the client, or a game that cannot reach a required host path. Review the Flatpak permissions for the affected resource and grant only what your setup requires.

Keep the permission boundary in mind when moving an existing library. A path that the native client can open directly may be hidden from the Flatpak client until the corresponding location is allowed. This is an integration difference, not evidence that the game files are damaged.
Choose Flatpak when
- You deliberately prioritize application isolation over maximum host integration.
- Your Linux distribution is immutable or otherwise favors Flatpak applications.
- You are prepared to manage access to additional drives, controllers, and host resources.
- Your system allows unprivileged user namespaces and provides Flatpak 1.12 or later for Steam container runtimes.
Snap: why it is the weakest default
Unsupported status and runtime fragility
Valve does not officially support the Snap package. Valve’s documentation describes using Steam container runtimes from inside Snap as “relatively fragile” because the AppArmor profile relies on implementation-specific paths that can change. A path change can therefore break a runtime without any change to the game itself.
Canonical emphasizes sandboxing and bundled dependencies for Snap, but those benefits do not override Valve’s compatibility warnings for Steam. If your goal is the most defensible installation for a general Linux gaming system, Snap adds risk without offering a support advantage over the native package.
Library locations outside /home
Valve documents a concrete limitation: installing container runtimes into a Steam library outside /home is known not to work in the Snap app. This matters if you keep games on a secondary disk, a mounted data partition, or another location outside your home directory. A library can be perfectly usable by a native client and still fail when Snap tries to place or launch its container runtime there.
When Snap might be unavoidable
Use Snap only when your distribution policy leaves no practical alternative and you accept an unsupported package with possible runtime and library-path issues. Confirm where the Steam library and container runtime will live before committing to this route. Do not select Snap for SteamVR.

SteamVR is the decisive exception
For ordinary desktop gaming, Flatpak can be workable if its permissions and runtime prerequisites are satisfied. SteamVR is different. Valve states that SteamVR for Linux cannot run properly inside unsupported Steam Snap or Steam Flatpak packages because they break both Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) leasing and asynchronous reprojection.
DRM leasing is involved in handing display control to a headset, while asynchronous reprojection helps present frames smoothly when rendering does not arrive at the headset’s target timing. The practical consequence is simple: if SteamVR is part of your workload, install the native distribution package instead of trying to repair a containerized package around these limitations.
Driver requirements for SteamVR
Valve’s guidance distinguishes the supported Linux graphics stacks. NVIDIA users need the proprietary NVIDIA driver. AMD and Intel users should use current open-source Mesa drivers. Valve warns that unsupported AMDVLK and AMDGPU-Pro combinations can fail. Verify the driver choice before diagnosing the package manager; a package change cannot compensate for an unsupported or broken graphics stack.

Check OpenGL before changing packages
Many Linux startup problems are caused by missing or broken OpenGL drivers. Valve recommends verifying that a 32-bit OpenGL program runs correctly. Treat that as a prerequisite check: if a basic 32-bit OpenGL workload cannot start, fix the host graphics installation first.

This check is especially important because Steam on Linux may need 32-bit graphics components even on a 64-bit operating system. A client that appears to install successfully can still fail at launch or when starting a game if those components are incomplete.

Keep the host current
Native packages depend on the distribution’s integration, while Flatpak and Snap add their own confinement and runtime layers. In all three cases, keep the Linux host and graphics drivers current. For native packages, this reduces dependency and driver mismatches; for containerized packages, it also ensures that the kernel policies and host interfaces expected by the sandbox are available.
A practical decision process
- Identify your most demanding workload. If you use SteamVR, select native immediately. If you only play standard desktop games, continue to the next step.
- Choose between integration and isolation. Select native for direct filesystem and device access. Select Flatpak if isolation or an immutable-host workflow is a higher priority and you can manage permissions.
- Check your library locations. If Steam must use a library outside
/home, avoid Snap because Valve documents that container runtimes in such a library do not work there. - Verify graphics prerequisites. Confirm that a 32-bit OpenGL program runs. For SteamVR, use the supported NVIDIA proprietary driver or current open-source Mesa drivers for AMD and Intel.
- Check Flatpak prerequisites if applicable. Confirm Flatpak 1.12 or later and an operating system that permits unprivileged user namespaces before relying on Steam container runtimes.
- Use Snap only under a policy constraint. If your distribution offers no practical alternative, accept that the package is unsupported and that AppArmor path changes or library placement can affect runtime behavior.
Installation and migration checklist
Use this sequence whenever you install Steam or move from one package format to another:
- Write down which games use external libraries, compatibility tools, or special devices. This identifies the host paths and permissions that must remain available.
- Update the Linux host and graphics drivers before testing the new client.
- Run the 32-bit OpenGL verification recommended in Valve’s troubleshooting guidance.
- Install the native package through your distribution’s normal package workflow, or install Flatpak only after confirming its version and user-namespace prerequisites.
- For Flatpak, review access to every additional game drive and controller before concluding that a library or device is missing.
- For Snap, keep container runtimes inside a library under
/home; Valve documents failure for runtimes installed in a library outside that path. - Launch a known-working game first, then test the workload that motivated your package choice. For SteamVR, test with the native package and supported graphics driver.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Steam will not start
Start with the host graphics stack. Verify that the required OpenGL drivers are present and that a 32-bit OpenGL program runs. If that check fails, repair the driver installation before switching package formats.
Flatpak cannot see a drive or controller
Check the app’s sandbox permissions for the missing resource. Flatpak may be functioning normally while intentionally hiding a path or device that has not been granted to the app.
Flatpak container runtime will not start
Confirm both documented prerequisites: the operating system must permit unprivileged user namespaces, and Flatpak must be version 1.12 or later. If your system cannot meet those requirements, use the native package rather than treating each game failure as an individual Proton problem.
Snap runtime fails after an update
Valve describes Snap’s Steam container integration as relatively fragile because its AppArmor profile depends on implementation-specific paths. Recheck the runtime path and the confinement behavior. If the container runtime is in a Steam library outside /home, move the workload to a supported location or choose the native package.
SteamVR launches but does not function correctly
Do not continue tuning a Snap or Flatpak installation. Valve says those unsupported packages break DRM leasing and asynchronous reprojection. Install the native distribution package and verify the graphics driver requirements for your GPU vendor.
What the 18,000-plus Proton figure does—and does not—mean
Valve’s SteamOS page says that the vast majority of the Steam library runs on SteamOS through Proton, citing more than 18,000 titles at the time of publication. That figure describes SteamOS and Proton library reach. It is not a controlled comparison of native, Flatpak, and Snap packages, and it should not be used as an FPS or package-performance benchmark.
