That Steam login window may not be a Steam window at all. In a Browser-in-the-Browser (BitB) scam, the page you opened draws a fake browser frame with HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Its address bar, Steam branding and login controls are pictures made by the page, so a convincing steamcommunity.com display does not prove that your browser visited Steam.

What a Browser-in-the-Browser Steam scam is

A normal phishing page replaces the whole page with a counterfeit sign-in form. A BitB page goes further: it simulates a separate login window inside the current page. Zscaler ThreatLabz described this technique in its 2023 report as a login page window simulated with basic HTML/CSS and an inline frame. A carefully designed imitation can be difficult to distinguish from a genuine single-sign-on window.

The address bar is part of the artwork

The fake frame, address bar, Steam icon, buttons and operating-system effects are ordinary page elements generated with JavaScript and CSS. The text shown in the bar can therefore be a legitimate-looking Steam address even though the browser has not navigated to Steam. CERT Orange’s 9 July 2025 analysis documented this style of fake Steam window.

Why the distinction matters

Anything typed into the imitation is sent to the scam page. That can include your Steam password, a Steam Guard code and information that helps an attacker use an existing account session. Stolen access can lead to account takeover, Steam Wallet theft, resale of inventory items and messages sent from your account to spread the lure.

How gaming lures get you to the fake window

The page usually supplies a reason that feels normal for a player. A friend, community or event gives the link social credibility before the counterfeit sign-in appears.

Lure Why it seems plausible
“Vote for my workshop skin” or “support my skin” Workshop participation commonly requires a Steam identity, so a sign-in request does not immediately look unusual.
Free cases, skins or other item offers Limited-time rewards create pressure to sign in before the offer disappears.
Tournament and esports invitations Team branding, schedules and match promotions can make an unfamiliar domain appear official.
Discord embeds and direct messages Rich previews can display text resembling steamcommunity.com while the actual destination is a different phishing domain.
A link from a friend A compromised Steam or Discord account can send a message that looks like ordinary conversation.
YouTube promotions Public engagement can make a scam domain appear established. Silent Push reported a January 2025 promotion that received more than 600 likes; that is an engagement count, not a victim count.

Silent Push identified a credible Steam BitB campaign on pages[.]dev in June 2024 and observed targeting around Steam, Counter-Strike 2 and the NAVI esports community. The observed kits were aimed primarily at desktop browsers and were not convincingly optimized for mobile.

How to tell whether a Steam login popup is real

Use the window-movement test

A genuine browser popup is a separate browser window. You can normally maximize, minimize or drag it outside the containing browser window. A BitB frame is trapped inside the page: its “title bar” and controls move only as page content and cannot be dragged onto the desktop as an independent window. This test is useful, but do not enter credentials merely to experiment.

Do not trust the URL drawn inside the popup

In a BitB attack, the visible URL is untrusted text. Treat shorteners, misspellings, unusual top-level domains and links whose preview text differs from their actual destination as warnings. A Discord preview or a familiar sender does not establish where the click will go.

Can a fake window steal a Steam Guard code?

Yes. A BitB form can ask for the Steam Guard code immediately after collecting your password and forward both values to the scammer. Two-factor authentication substantially raises the difficulty of account takeover, but CERT Orange cautions that it is not a 100% guarantee when a victim supplies the code to an attacker-controlled page. Never approve or type a code into a page reached from an unsolicited gaming message.

How BitB compares with other Steam phishing

Technique Fake browser window? Relays authentication to the real service? What may be captured Typical delivery and verification
Ordinary fake-login phishing No; the counterfeit form occupies the page. Usually no; it simply sends what you submit to the operator. Passwords and any codes entered. Messages, fake rewards or spoofed sites. Verify the address by opening Steam independently.
Browser-in-the-Browser Yes; HTML/CSS imitates a popup inside the current page. Not inherently; the defining feature is the visual window, though the stolen credentials can then be used by the operator. Passwords and Steam Guard codes entered into the imitation; account access may follow. Workshop votes, skins, esports and compromised accounts. A genuine separate popup can be moved outside the browser; the imitation cannot.
Adversary-in-the-middle phishing Not required. Yes; the attacker proxies the sign-in between you and the real service. Credentials, MFA exchanges and potentially session tokens. Often a proxy login link. Verify the destination independently and use phishing-resistant authentication where available.

  1. Stop and close the page. Do not download files, approve prompts or enter another code.
  2. Change your Steam password immediately. Start from an official Steam domain listed above or from the Steam client, not from the message. Change the password of the email account associated with Steam as well, especially if it was reused.
  3. Review active sessions and revoke unknown access. Remove devices or sessions you do not recognize and check for changed account details, trades, purchases or messages.
  4. Contact Steam Support. Use help.steampowered.com and explain that credentials or a Steam Guard code were entered on a suspected phishing page.
  5. Keep Steam Guard enabled. Two-factor protection limits many attacks, even though it cannot make disclosure of a live code safe.
  6. Scan for malware if anything was installed. Fake cheats, demos and gaming utilities can conceal malware that targets Steam. Remove suspicious software only after verifying the scanner and download source.
  7. Report the source. Report the sending Steam or Discord account and the phishing page. Steam’s scam guidance specifically asks users to report accounts involved in the “reported and will be banned” scam pattern.

What is known about the scale of these campaigns

Public reports document individual campaigns and delivery methods, but they do not establish a reliable campaign-wide victim total, loss total or prevalence figure. The more than 600 likes reported for one YouTube promotion measure audience engagement, not successful compromises.

Steam’s own warning

Valve/Steam Support advises: “If you suspect a site asking for your login information is not an official Steam site, do not enter any information on the site and disregard it.” That rule also applies when the page shows a familiar Steam address inside a polished popup: verify the destination outside the message before signing in.
