When a Windows .exe patcher says it cannot find your game on a Steam Deck, the usual cause is a mismatch between where the patcher’s file picker looks and where SteamOS stores the game. One community workaround copies the game to a folder you can see, patches the copy, and then copies the results back into the original game folder. It can get past the picker, but no source tests it against named patchers, and it carries a real risk of overwriting files, so it needs to be done carefully.
Why the patcher cannot find the game folder
A Steam Deck is a PC running SteamOS, not a Windows handheld. Valve’s Steam Deck booklet (2022) puts it this way: “Steam Deck is a PC, but it doesn’t come with Windows.” Most Windows games run through Proton, the compatibility layer Valve builds into Steam, so the game’s files live in a Linux file system while the patcher is a Windows program that expects Windows-style paths.
This is the same confusion that appears in community discussions. A Steam Community question from 2022 reads: “How can I install a windows game through it’s setup.exe on the Steam Deck Desktop Mode,” and other posts ask “what the install path?” or report “game exe not found!” Those are reader phrasings, not measured search data, but they describe the failure accurately.

A Windows-style file picker shows drive letters and folders it can reach. The Steam library and the game’s files sit in Linux directories, and parts of the path are hidden by default under your home folder. Community reports describe the Z: drive as the route from a Windows program into the Linux file system inside a Proton prefix, which is why many patchers can reach the game only through a path like Z: followed by the Linux path. Those reports are anecdotal, so treat the Z: route as something to check in the picker rather than something guaranteed.

Each game runs in its own Proton prefix
Proton keeps a separate prefix, a simulated Windows environment with its own registry and drive mappings, for each game. Valve’s Proton FAQ describes prefixes and notes that manually launching an executable with Proton requires a desktop launcher file, and it states that this manual approach is untested in that FAQ. The practical consequence is that a patcher started as its own application may run in a different prefix from the game and may not see the game folder at all, even if you can browse to it elsewhere.
The relay workaround, step by step
A DEV Community article describes the method below. The article gives no controlled testing, no list of patchers or games it was checked against, and no success rate, so read it as a proposed workaround rather than a proven fix.

Open the game’s local files from Steam. Return to Steam, right-click the game in your Library, and choose Properties > Installed Files > Browse local files.

Copy the whole game folder to a visible location such as Downloads or Desktop. Check first that the copy will fit: a large game needs as much free space as its install size.

Start the patcher through one of the routes the article names: Bottles, Protontricks, or a non-Steam game entry. Use the route you already know how to manage, because the article does not establish which route works for a given patcher.

Select the staged copy in the patcher’s file picker. Navigate through the Z: drive to the copy you made in step 3, and confirm the folder contains the game’s executable before continuing.

Run the patch on the copy only. Let the patcher finish and check that it reports success without errors.

Copy the patched files back into the original game folder from step 2, replacing the old files only after you have kept a backup of the originals.

- Keep the untouched original folder, or a second copy, until the patched game starts and reaches a point you can test.
- Do not run Verify integrity of game files (Properties > Installed Files) after patching unless you are prepared to lose the changes. Steam restores files it considers damaged or missing, and a patched file that differs from Valve’s version can be reverted.
- Confirm the staged folder is the right game. Patching the wrong folder can break an unrelated install.

Check these before you copy anything
- Install available SteamOS system updates and restart the Deck. Steam Support recommends this when applications are unstable.
- Set the game’s compatibility tool in Library > Properties > Compatibility if the game is not using the version you expect. This is general Steam Play guidance and does not change how a patcher’s picker works.
- Confirm you have enough free space for a full copy of the game folder.
- Read the patcher’s own instructions for the expected install path. Some patchers document a folder they need, and that can be simpler than navigating a picker.
Do not confuse this with Local Network Game Transfers
Steam’s Local Network Game Transfers feature copies eligible game installation and update content between Steam clients on the same local network, under the conditions Valve specifies. It does not transfer local saves or configuration files, and it does not apply a third-party .exe patch. If your goal is to patch a game, this feature does not solve the problem.

If the patcher still fails
- The patcher cannot see the staged folder. Try another start route (Bottles, Protontricks, or a non-Steam entry) and check which prefix it reports using. The sources do not establish which route works for a given patcher.
- The patcher reports a missing component. The available sources do not cover dependency installs for specific patchers. Check the patcher’s documentation for the component it requires.
- The patched game will not start. Replace the patched files with your backup, then compare the file list against the original to find which change caused the failure.
- A game update removes the patch. Expect this after Steam updates or verifies the game. Reapply the patch to the copy and repeat the copy-back steps.
