“Gainsborough” has appeared in AMD driver files and a shipping-manifest reference, but neither Valve nor AMD has confirmed it as a Steam Deck 2 chip. The reported Zen 6c and RDNA 5 specifications—and a possible 2027 or 2028 arrival—remain unverified leak claims, not a product announcement.
What evidence has surfaced about Gainsborough?
Digital Citizen reported on October 2, 2026, that “Gainsborough” appeared in files shipped with AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.9.2, released September 29. The report says a forum user identified the driver entry, and leaker Olrak29 linked the codename to an unfamiliar FF6 socket designation in a shipping manifest. Digital Citizen described those references as the hard evidence; the specifications circulating alongside them come from leak sources.
The name has prompted Steam Deck speculation because hardware circles commonly call the current Deck’s APU Aerith, and Aerith’s surname is Gainsborough. That is a suggestive naming connection, not proof that the two chips are related.

That has not been confirmed. Valve and AMD have not publicly identified Gainsborough as a Steam Deck successor chip. AMD’s 2023 Form 10-K does confirm that the companies partnered on a semi-custom APU optimized for handheld gaming in the original Steam Deck, but it does not identify Gainsborough or announce a successor.
#1 Best Overall
- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
So the careful answer is: Gainsborough is a codename with reported traces in AMD-related material, and it may be connected to a future handheld, but its connection to Valve remains unverified.
How do the reported specifications compare with the current Steam Deck?
The figures below distinguish Valve’s published specifications for the current Steam Deck from claims attributed to leak sources. They do not establish what a retail Steam Deck 2 would contain.

| Category | Current Steam Deck | Gainsborough leak claims |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Zen 2, 4 cores/8 threads, 2.4–3.5GHz (Valve’s technical sheet) | 4–8 Zen 6c cores (reported leak range; no clock speed stated by the leak reporting) |
| GPU | RDNA 2, 8 compute units, 1.0–1.6GHz (Valve’s technical sheet) | 12–24 RDNA 5 compute units (reported leak range; no clock speed stated by the leak reporting) |
| Manufacturing process | Not stated in Valve’s cited technical sheet | TSMC N3P 3nm (reported leak claim, not an AMD or Valve specification) |
| APU power | 4–15W (Valve’s technical sheet) | Not stated in the leak reporting |
| Memory | 16GB LPDDR5 (Valve’s technical sheet) | Capacity and configuration not stated in the leak reporting |
| Display and battery | 1280×800 display and 40Wh battery (Valve’s technical sheet) | Not stated in the leak reporting |
| Storage expansion | High-speed UHS-I microSD slot (Valve’s technical sheet) | Not stated in the leak reporting |
| Release timing | Already available; this is the current-generation baseline | Late 2027 or 2028 (reported leak timing, not an announced launch window) |
| Price | Not included here; Valve’s cited technical sheet is a specifications reference | Not stated in the leak reporting |
AMD has used the Zen 6 name in official product context, but that does not verify this chip’s alleged core count or design. In the report, “RDNA 5” is leak shorthand for an unannounced graphics generation; AMD’s public graphics-architecture material cited there stops at RDNA 4.
Would those rumored numbers mean a faster Steam Deck?
They are not enough to calculate real-world performance. Core and compute-unit counts alone do not reveal clock speeds, memory bandwidth, power limits, cooling behavior, or how a finished handheld performs in games. The leak reporting supplies no clock speed, memory design, or power envelope for Gainsborough, so a percentage performance estimate would be speculation.

For a handheld, the important comparison is not simply peak speed: it is how much more performance a new chip can deliver within a similar battery and thermal budget. Valve designer Pierre-Loup Griffais has described that as the threshold for a successor. PC Gamer reported on April 28, 2026, that Griffais said Valve was “hard at work” on Steam Deck 2 and quoted him from an IGN interview: “We’re not interested in getting to a point where it’s 20 or 30 or even 50% more performance at the same battery life. We want something a little bit more demarcated than that.”

Late 2027 or 2028 is a timeframe attributed to leak sources, not a date set by Valve. Griffais’s reported comments indicate that Valve is working on a successor, with a substantial performance-and-efficiency step as the goal, but PC Gamer’s April 2026 report gave no firm release date. Valve has not announced a product name, launch window, or price.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Beyond the unconfirmed identity and architecture claims, the leak reporting does not provide a final memory configuration, clock speeds, power envelope, battery capacity, retail model, or price. Those details matter for judging both performance and battery life; until they are established by Valve or AMD, the codename is a reason to watch for further evidence, not a basis for treating a Steam Deck 2 specification sheet as settled.
